Re: Define Feminism
Sorry no edit. It's important to remember how broad "feminism" is too though. When Nick says some people are "too serious" about feminism, I think depending on what is meant by that, most people calling themselves feminists would look at movements like "separatists feminism" and "revolutionary femin...

Re: Science and Autodidacticism
I think it's really difficult to teach yourself a general but good broad knowledge of science. There are so many important gaps that you'll miss because you won't even know to think of them. If I were you I'd try to acquire basic textbooks on broad topics. It's possible to acquire most textbooks onl...

Re: Define Feminism
I think Allan's distinction is really important, because when you come across academic papers claiming that Einstein's theory of relativity is sexist, or that we live in an "ocular centric regime", or any of the other absurdities of post-modern philosophies, you can be sure that most people who call...

11. Spook Country, William Gibson, 373 pg. The second book in the Blue Ant trilogy, after Pattern Recognition. Out of all the books I have read by Gibson, I judged this to be his weakest contribution. The characters and plot were not very captivating, and the ending was anticlimactic. However, it i...

Re: Cant do knee kicks. I just started.
It's kind of boring, but a good way of learning the first kicks is throwing or dropping the bag straight to the kick and then catching it again. When you're confident with that, move to doing 2 or 3 in a row and then hand catching. The aim is to work on being able to do one well, and then a small nu...

Re: Modified Book Club
Ok so I'm still reading Don Quixote, but slowly. I did really enjoy it to begin with, but I'm starting to fee like it's just iterations of Don meets people, invents chivalric story, gets beaten up, repeat. Anyway I'll struggle on, only 500 or so pages to go :P, but as the challenge topic shows, I've...

I've been doing a bit of amateur mycology again, mainly inspired by the growth of location specific taxon specific facebook groups (ie Tasmanian Fungi :) ). I reckon it's to stop people from leaning out too far, especially if there's an obstacle in the way that is obscuring the shot from the true position. We've usually be a little loose rules in Australia though, although we have had golf at each Aus Champs since the late 2000s. I think the influence o...

Re: Asmus and maybe others talk about the 2014 FIFA World Cu
Ah well, tournament over. The final was a good game. I'm sure everybody expected Germany to win, but Argentina had their chances. I heard a few suggestions that the extra day rest and Argentina's harder semi final had an influence, but I was unconvinced. Argentina also had probably the easiest draw ...

Re: Nemesis/genesis
Ales' advice on these tricks was to transition into the second foot dexes while the first foot is going down, so you should be in the air with the barraging set going down and the dexing foot coming up. A lot of people, especially with good sets, plant both feet before the second set of dex(s), but ...

Re: FOOTBAG GOLF.
Yep, lots of fun. Your rules seem pretty close to the official rules. I guess the concept is pretty straight forward. One thing I'd add is that you can increase the fun of a course by nominating particular ways you have to interact with objects. For example in the local park where we played we would...

Pattern Recognition: Thoroughly enjoyed this. I agree with Dave about it being one of his best books. It dealt with a number of themes that I'm interested in. Particularly, as the name suggests, the pursuit of patterns where none exist. I think the link of this theme with 9/11 is very good, given th...

Brazil were a bit unlucky though, with the Hulk "handball".
Epic win by Costa Rica this morning, and they were unlucky too. I think the Aussie ref has been the worst of the tournament. I've mainly stopped watching the 2am games, and am just getting up for the last game (5 to 6 am start).

Re: Asmus and maybe others talk about the 2014 FIFA World Cu
Yeah the Aus v Ned game was awesome. I think not having Tim Cahill in the future will be massive, because he's been our only consistent goal scorer for the last 10 years. I just don't know who we have that can fill that spot well enough for Australia to be competitive. Also his goal last night. 8O R...
