I freestyled at less than 20 kicks.

I think just as long as you don't neglect the basic kicks, you'll be fine with learning stalls at the same time.

I'd be curious to see what some of the top level players think on this subject. I heard that there used to be a secret BAP-only forum on flipsider where they said you had to be able to do something like 250 inside kicks before you move on to stalls.

Personally I voted for 100+. It forces you to learn concepts with a certain level of mastery before you go on to other things. Once you learn toe stalls you want to be able to a lot of them consistently before you move on to legovers and mirages. It's building a foundation. If you don't have the discipline to do that in the very beginning, you're going to have a hard time doing it later on.

I probably get bored and stop paying attention and drop before I get to 100 right now

100+ even that doesnt seem like much control. I can do 50 clippers no prob but Im still convinced my clippers suck.
Its important to get accuracy down pat before you start jumping around or else you will get injured and its downhill from there...

I think most people who are new to the sport should learn those 25-50 kicks steady, but after that kicking could be warmup and a part of the training. I think many people would, like someone already said here, would lose interest in the sport if they had to go on with the kicks for too long (if they dont like kicking).

I hate the idea of someone not being taught how to do a toe stall if they can't get x-many kicks. That's probably because I would have hated that when I was learning. I don't think I would have continued if someone told me I had to do improve by x-much in order to learn something else basic to try.

I was someone who got bored or really frustrated if i tried one thing for too long, so I always liked having options for stuff to try/practice. Inside kicks, toe stalls, inside stalls.

We had to teach Juho how to kick after he was almost guiltless so he could have short kicking breaks in his routines.

I have a friend who can do 2000+ kicks, his high score is around 2700. But every time i try to get him into freestyle he just puts it off. He doesn't want a "competitive spirit" to ruin the fun of playing, and i guess he's just not interested. Oh well, i just know he would make a great freestyler.

When i got my record of 197, dropped because of a freaking wasp flying into my face, i was exhausted. It felt like an eternity. After that i was like, Now onto some stalls.

a stall is freestyle it's hacky sack with style when they want to learn tricks and have a real interest is the time to get them lavers and they can be serious and learn freestyle

when i first saw the title of the thread i went "ANYTIME!" until i saw the polls. i say 0 - 25. hell even 0. like my friend used to play soccer and he could not inside kick to save his life but he had a decent toe stall so he just started with that.

I could do 5,000 kicks before I learned the toe stall, but I'm an obsessive extremist, and I wouldn't recommend that. The more you can do, however, the better your overall control and string length will be, in my opinion. I'd say if someone can do 50 kicks in a row that'd be a decent foundation to begin freestyling. I'd recommend continuing consecutive practice even after you begin freestyling...it'll only improve your game.
I stopped at 10,000.

Lol, I see you stopped early :P

This thread makes me want to go and drill kicks. I think I can get like 160 something. I agree that the more kicks you do the better your string length.

With all this information cumulating in my brain right now, I think that you can't really say how many kicks someone can do before they start to freestyle. I think it's completely up to them. I don't think anyone can set a number, because even now I still don't feel like I'm in complete control of the bag when I'm kicking it for a long period of time.
