Jay Boychuk is Awesome

Post by g00d33 » 07 Feb 2010 11:56

Thesis: Jay Boychuk is undoubtedly, undeniably, unquestionably, unequivocally, supremely, extremely, ultimately, and most definitely awesome.

Jay Boychuk has recently performed a great act of kindness towards me this past week via Matt Cross. This act, combined with his utter coolness, has merited this thread for people to share how they’ve come to experience the phenomenon known as the Mr. Boychuk. I’ll start.

I first met Jay back in the September of the 09. Having started to really follow his progress a bit earlier in the summer, or maybe even the springtime, I was bubbling with excitement that I’d get to meet yet another great footbagger. I was excited to meet classic names like the Cleaver, the Enlightener, the Executioner, the one and only Goldberg, and I was just as excited to meet the Boychuk. I knew that Jay was really good and was only getting better, but the little tidbit that I was unaware of was how relatively short he’d been kicking. It also baffled me that he was indeed only a year older than I. And of course, Jay was better than I had even expected, busting out difficult combos or concepts upon request amidst the hotel shred late at night.

It is because of Jay that I want to try the mythical kebab. After using the search function on the 26th page of one of the best blogs to read in the footblogs section, there were 40 matches for the word “kebab.â€

I am a long-time member of the Jay Boychuk Appreciation Society (yet I still spell his last name "Boychuck" sometimes).

I don't remember when I first met Jay, but I remember seeing an intensity in him very early on that reminded me of David and Jorden - quiet, a bit reserved most of the time, but when it came time to do his thing, there was a passion, a drive, almost an anger to get better and better, closer to perfect.

It's more than that for Jay, though. He adores footbag, he worships footbaggers, he eats, sleeps, and lives footbag. No one gets more psyched at watching an awesome string than Jay - anyone who has seen footage where he's in a circle watching a great player knows about the Jay Dance (it's a bit like the pogo, with inverted jazz hands).

He's a great hotel mate for worlds and a very reliable designated driver. Thanks for being on the scene, Jay!

:D sweet thread!

my first memory of jay is from, woa, jay help me out here late 2006 early 2007??? some like this? when he was in mainz for a year. he had only begun to play that time and i was meeting up with my shred buddies from that town wich i all knew. and then there was this kid who said hi with the word: "can i buy one of your bags" in german, and since i did not expect a foreigner version of german i did not understand a word and just said "hi" :D i just watched the video of this session :) jay we kicked ass back then, now you kick more ass and i kick a little less, but thats because jay is kinda cooler, more driven :)
when i need motivation for shred, i just talk to mr boychuck for a while, and then i´m good to go! :)

in other words, matt i need one of these buttons!

i want a button, too.

jay is so cool... cool enough to cause me to read his maniacally long blog posts, which is saying alot. i think i first "met" jay at nyj 07, but we didnt really get introduced or anything, i just was like "oh, thats jay", as he got what i believe were spinning tips from david clavens two years before i would ask sir david for spinning tips. also, i got to have some mexican cuisine with jay at green cup 08, which was a blast. i have always admired how adament jay can get about hitting a certain move or link in shred circles, adore his adoration dances, and have watched every single move video in his early thread pages and on his youtube channel. flailing delusional set? what the fuck, canadia (no typo). i cant wait to hang with jay again.

I was at that Hotel Shred session, and he definitely inspired me, along with astounded me and put me into a state of shock and awe. That guys rips. I strive to get that good someday. It was an honor meeting you and shredding with you, too. Keep it up, Jay.

Jay was my roommate at worlds 07. the rest of the guys in our room liked to sleep in, but i liked to get up and have a warm-up session in the morning, and Jay would come along and kick with me. we chatted about form and style and whatnot, it was clear that he had a lot of passion and energy for the game.

shortly thereafter i completely fell out of the scene and more or less stopped practicing. in the last month or so i've gotten back into it, and i'm delighted to see Jay is not only still playing, but is kicking all sorts of ass. kudos sir, and godspeed - i hope to see you at worlds this year.

I think the mere fact that this thread got Cody to make a post on modified is a testament to Jay's awesome. Indeed that was a great time rooming with him at World's 07. We were maybe a few notches below him in ability level at that time but over the years with undying passion and dedication to the sport he has blown us out of the water. It has been a lot of fun watching him get better and better.

Hope to shred with you again some time soon amigo.

First time I met Jay was Worlds 07, and I was unable to sleep before my intermediate competition.

So I wandered outside, and soon came across someone else drilling out and made short conversations with him. Then we parted, and nothing much happened after that.

However it was during Worlds 08 is when Jay and I became friends. Not to mention having free pb&j helps with getting people to say hi.

Since then he's provided me with inspiration to make videos, and so on.

Also I get to chill with Jay this week.

I've never seen a player exude so much passion and intensity at every stage of a shred circle before.

it's not,

because he doesn't exude it physically so much as he exudes it by how obviously he's having to work hard to keep from exuding it physically. He's never unrestrained.

I don't know about having his kids? :?

But I met him this past weekend and he is seriously good at footbag. He spent the entire weekend shredding day and night all the way up until Steve had to drag him out of the circle so they could make their flight home.

At first I thought he was European from his style (sick, sick, sick)!
