I have just leaned that the UK government has ruled that Intelligent Design (ID) can not be deemed as Science and hence will not be taught in UK schools in the Science curriculum.

Article here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/25/id_not_science/

Hooray for that!

I've heard bullshit from people saying that fossils and other evidence of evolution were placed on the Earth to test our faith in God and what not... No, they weren't. I hate church goers for this reason.

My parents always try to get our family into the church thing... but anytime they find a decent church, we get there, and next thing you know, you MUST vocally state that dinosaurs never existed. They actually told us we had to say that in front of the whole service, or we could not be members. (All the better in my opinion.) I said flat out, "Are you high? Of course dinosaurs existed, how do you explain fossils." Bunch of people looked at me stupidly, surprised, and emotionally hurt... I would have stayed and proved these idiots wrong over and over, but my parents imediately told me to shut my trap, and my parents quietly told that pastor that will do no such thing and we left. Heh. This was a year ago... ish. Maybe a few months more. It was just before school got out last year. It was dumb beyond all recognition.

Rejecting evolution is so ridiculous. There are so many examples of evolution happening right now, not over millions of years, but examples of rapid genetic changes over short periods of time. If God created the world "old" then He created it less than 6 months ago, or else evolution is real and there is no need to explain any part of the world through the existence of any supernatural being.

It was back in '99
Watchin' movies all the time
Oh when I went away
For doin' my first crime
And I never thought
That we was gonna see each other (see each other)
And then I came out
Mami moved me down South
Oh I'm with my girl
Who I thought was my world
It came out to be
That she wasn't the girl for me (girl for me)

You're way too beautiful girl
That's why it'll never work
You had me suicidal, suicidal
What you say is ooooooovert

i took a physical geography class once that totally mashed any religious beliefs i had. what was whack is that the teacher that convinced me god didnt exist was a churchie!! anyway, here was his wrap. well a video he showed us in class anyway. so Pangea right, big ol ball of rock. this state of our planet has been physically proven. PATOUCHE and chaos breaks loose, planet starts cracka-lackin. oua-la, we gots bodies of water seperating major land masses. cool cool. chaos doenst slow, so now a storms a brewin. what do we get, lightning. WHAPOW she strikes the ocean, and so we end up with our first single-celled organism, which is completely A-Sexual and self-reproducing. we have litteral proof on this planet that cells evolve and grow, no matter what a book written 2000 yrs ago tells us. and then so on and so forth in that evolutionary path until we get ALL OF THE SPECIES ON THE PLANET!!! so let's say creationism exists, and god and all blabiddy blib....... why all the other species on the planet?? some are quite detremental to our health, and harbour no positive aspects whatsover, so in this case, GOD IS A PRICK THAT LIKES TO FUCK WITH US!!! and second, why the rest of the universe if heaven is only for us?!?!?!?! :? , wouldnt that just be the fuckin biggest waste of space?? :P ah, ah, hehehehe. anyway, i like to think of it all as a book that was written like 400 yrs ago, where we could have noooooo possible way of nowing wheather or not it was fabricated by our elders cuase ppl were just getting WAY TOO FUCKIN BLISSFULL AND WE JUST COULDNT HAVE THAT, so they wrote a book that puts a damper on anything fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, us neither. But yeah, I was just givin' you shit. Southern Minnesota people are always saying how much Iowans suck, and I can only assume nothern Iowans say the same about Minnesotans, lol. Iowa sucks, and Canada blows, and that gives Minnesota wind. (kidding)

Like hell, you northerners have an accent....:D

Anyways, in response to Fred, I would have told that pastor to go fuck himself. That's pretty shitty that they make people do that just to be in the church. I hate the church... because of it we're 200 years behind where we should be as far as technological advances go.

I think he's talking about the fact that many of the great discoveries of the middle ages were labelled as heresy by the Church, and the people who made the discoveries were either put in house arrest, or even tortured and killed.

When you look at somebody like Constantine, who is completely responsible for the spread of Christianity through out the world, and indeed every single Christian's beliefs trace back to Constantine, it's easy to see just what a exceptionally negative effect Christianity has had on the world.

The beliefs Christians have were spread by somebody who boiled alive his own son. That's a good indication of how "good" those beliefs are.

EX-FRICKEN-ZACTLY!!!!!!!!!
You also have to factor in the fact that alot of time has been spent trying to prove/disprove the existence of God, instead of spending time on advancing our knowledge of our own planet, which could have possibly led to great technological advancements in many many fields. And as for the torturring thing.....remember witches? Women were burned at the steak if they showed even the slightest bit of intellectual stimulation  . In doing so we probably ended up ridding the world of what could have been an era of female entrepeneuuuerueureship  . Our species has spent too much time fighting and not enough time working together. We have a problem with CONFUSING UNITY WITH DEPENDANCE!! :?

I really enjoy reading this thread, and that rarely happens. Please continue this thread, especially you Chad. I'm going to take one of those sentences you wrote in that last post and place it in my signature if you don't mind.

I couldn't agree more. Humans are a pathetic race, you don't see other species squabbling and fighting. Killing each other off. We would be so much better if we just opened our eyes and saw what we were doing to each other and our planet. It really makes me consider not having kids just thinking about the hell that they and their children will live thru because of our actions right now. I'm seriously afraid of what will happen to humanity in the future. We think that all will be well, global warming isn't real; god will save us from our own stupidity. Within the last 100 years we've caused so much damage to the world and it's other inhabitants that if you were to travel back in time a few hundred years you wouldn't be able to comprehend the damage we've done. Speaking of evolution, just take a minute and think of the natural 'flow' of things. Climate changes happen over rather long spaces in time. Thus allowing species to slowly accumulate traits and mutations that allow them to better survive in said new environment: there's evolution for you. Now I ask...what is humanity doing to the environment?

Yep.....

OK, 2 things.
1: Don't completely dismiss having children, plz. Our ancestors of ye way back when were at a loss when electricity came along and didn't quite know exactly what to do with it as far as benefiting our planet. As a species since the discovery of electricity we have jumped amazing bounds. There might be ppl all over the world squabling slowing it down, but it doesnt mean we didnt accomplish anything. I have not met any of you yet I am talking to you through the magic of the internet!! :P . Anyway, yeah, sorry, back to where I was going with it. That generation did destroy the planet, but they weren't smart enough and educated enough to ask the questions of how their actions would affect us. WE ARE THE NEW GENERATION!!! :D The one's with the open minds. And if we act, we can make this world a better place for our children. Just look at how many ppl on this forum speak about how much they hate what the ppl in control are doing right now. But that won't last forever. Soon we will be the ones in that position. So that's the first reason why I'm optimistic for our future. Or at the very least hopeful.

Ok, ma deuxieme raison. (and I apologize now if this is all slightly off topic, but I'm considering social evolution not physical, oh and also I don't remember anyone referencing this yet, but I haven't read every post geeeeeeeeez cahhhhhhmonnnnnnnn  )

Recently I was watching Daily Planet, and the topic of global warming came up. I haven't seen "The Inconvinient Truth", but this is just as good trust me. So you need to know something before this is even relevant, apparently thunder storms cause Ozone. Sweet.
So on the show they were showing how WE COULD CURE GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!! 8O <------ that's your face right now right? It's true. The way it can be done is by putting steamboatish vessels in the oceans. Tons of em that will all be running round the clock. And they will all be electric powered I believe. So anywhew, what these S.B.s will be doing is pumping little particles of water into the air in like a mist type effect. This is going to create a layer of what can be considered clouds, but are thinner. This layer is going to somewhat break the path of U.V. rays from the sun, and also it is thin enough to let out all the crud we as a ppl create. Thunder storms will continue on above our 2nd atmosphere, closing up the Ozone layer. WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!! :D
This is only an aid in the war on global warming though, we still have to be more aware of how wasteful we are and it's actually possible that we prevent our own downfall.
sorry that was so long

This was an interesting article on optimism for humanity;

http://www.mcall.com/news/opinion/anoth ... erview-hed

Also I really enjoyed this essay from Steven Pinker;

http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/pinker0 ... index.html

Both articles suggest that the scientific knowledge we have suggests that things are getting better for the world, and that we can have hope for the future.

even though Constantine helped spread christianity, he was actually paegan and wasn't baptized until he was on his death bed. he chose christianity as the country's religion because it was getting popular.

That's completely irrelevant to the point I was making.

Also my understanding is that it's debateble when he became a Christian. Certainly he officially announced it late in life, but he significantly favoured Christianity for a long time before that, and his mother was a Christian, so many historians think that his support for Christianity was a direct result of his mothers beliefs, which is pretty likely given that 80% of people today have the same religious belief as their mother.
