Walls
Walls
There used to be a lot of discussion about this, but I haven't heard much latley. Plus it seems like a lot more people are doing it. In the new polish video I think everyone but 2 people had no walls.
Do you think it matters? Just preference?
Just wondering.
I'll post my view after I read some good points.

My main thinking in not having walls is that they seem sorta unnatural and excessive.
A good toe area just needs to be slightly concave, not a walled cup.
Since we all know we can toe stall without the walls, what purpose do they serve?
I know people will argue that it keeps pixies clean but I challenge by arguing the opposite of that.
Walls make learning pixies/fairies needlessly frustrating. I think they actually encourage thinner sets because it is the easiest way to get the bag out of the deep cup.
Without walls a pixie can leave the foot on a more natural path and be really really really deep.
I think that a small amount of toe wall at the back of the toe box is a good thing, it helps save rakes and stuff like that without getting in the way of setting. That amount of wall is all that is really of any use in my opinion.
But really, it just comes down to how you like to play and the things you want your shoes to do for you.
I find walls frustrating so I remove them. That's my side of things.

i used to play without, and then somewhere i read about the whole "walls makes your pixies cleaner"
and i learned how to do them without walls, and now that my shoes have walls, ive had to almost completely re-learn pixies, and with the walls my pixies are cleaner than ever, so i think maybe for the learning process of footbag, (i.e. learning pixies and fairys blah blah) toe walls to me are fairly important. I feel that my game is alot better now that i have toe walls on my shoes.
edit: it was Rory (thanks Rory!)

I say off.
When I had the walls on my laver's I couldn't pixie at all! Then when I started to learn them with clima's I tried to go back to laver's and it didn't work.
I agree with what Tom said, "Without walls a pixie can leave the foot on a more natural path and be really really really deep."
I can now pixie pretty well without the toe walls on there.
I could fairy with the walls on! But not pixie!

when i read the poll... i thought, you mean.. like shredding near a wall? but that sounded ludicrous, and even so my answer to that is, no, cuz i'm neurotic and will actually make smaller dexes even if i'm 5 feet from a wall...
but i'm guessing u mean toe walls. my lavers have toe walls, and i use them to stabilize the bag when spinning, catch it, it helps... blah = i keep toe walls

On. I'm for the argument that "walls make your pixies cleaner." I used to pixie without walls and I always felt that they were dragged or spinning during mid-flight. When I learned how to pixie with walls on, I can judge where the bag should land or set properly on the toe area.
I don't know. I guess it's preference. I bet I can still pixie the same if I switched back to my wall-less shoes.

off, but I might keep them on for a while with my next pair, just to remember. I like my shoes sleek, like an extention of my body. also, when i tightened the laces the walls would get too narrow at the top, and the bag would get caught in the pockets sometimes, not related to pixies.
edit:

I left them a little thicker on the black ones.

really? I view toe walls as being analogous to pubic hair. If you shave it all off, you just look like a giant baby. Do giant babies look more legit to people who don't know anything about footbag? I thought not.slapdash21 wrote:so off. modded shoes with no walls look more legit to people who dont know footbag than modded shoes with walls.

I was honestly thinking along the lines of the exact same type of analogysb wrote:really? I view toe walls as being analogous to pubic hair. If you shave it all off, you just look like a giant baby. not sure, I play barefoot mostly but left the toe walls on my lavers for some unknown reason. IMO the pixie cleanliness issue is a technique one not an equipment one.
coming to think of it more playing with no toe walls shoes feels a bit more natural (natural as in barefoot feeling) for pixie and fairy, but that's about it.

Obviously if you are doing Pixie tricks then your toe stalls are gonna be pretty good, so having toe walls or not wont matter in that regard, so it doesnt make you 'babyish'. It matters to pixie sets in a big way. If you are already good at pixies then you will be able to do them fairly well walls or no walls, but a new player cutting the walls off risks slurry pixie sets in the long term IMO.
