Tracing Panels out on Black Facile
Tracing Panels out on Black Facile
I don't know what to use to trace out black panels on black facile. I've tried chalk and that was horrible, got the whole section of facile white.
Anyone have any methods or tools to trace out black or dark panels.

I've kinda been thinking about that too, since the only two colors I have now are white and black
What I've come up with is go to the patterns.phasing.org page, print out a few copies of the patterns, then tape them on to the material and cut it out. I leave a little bit of extra paper from the design itself, 1) to make sure I'm cutting it right, and 2) to make sure when I'm finished, it comes off easily and the tape doesn't stick to the fabric. Aaand that's all I've got
yeah, try to do that on a piece of plastic, making a traceable template.
then once you find youve perfected your favorite template, or simply just one that looks good MAKE MORE templates from sheet metal. i like copper. some people like aluminum. some steel. whatever. whatever you can find, use metal shears (hardcore scissors) and a file to perfect it.
some people can use machines to do it, and i know there used to be someone on modified whod make metal ones for like 10$ a set.
but anyways, tracing panels is quickest nest to using a punch or diecut thingy. and thats always loud.

I just bought a silver ball point type pen (although i think it might be gel, its kinda messy) and had great success cutting black (midnight blue) panels.

this is a little wasteful
actually unbelievably wasteful, but sometimes when i can't find a gel pen i put masking tape on the bad side, then trace the pattern onto the masking tape and then cut it out. however it's handy if you have trouble deciphering the bad side from the good side assuming you put it on the bad side...

if you're concerned about waste consider the amount of time it takes to trace and cut out individual panels. To cut out enough panels for one 32 panel bag one method takes 20+ minutes, the other takes about 2-3 minutes. I don't think the difference in waste products adds up to much more than about 40 or 50 cents worth of wasted fabric.

Just had a thought about making templates: try printing the template from the Template generator on this site, onto sticker paper (you know, like envelope label type paper you can get from print stores). Then you can cut out that shape and stick it to your template material (stiff plastic is good). This would allow you to make very accurate cuts (with a sharp knife, scissors or guillotine) without having to hold the template in place while cutting etc.
Just a thought i had now, dunno if its old news...
