Problem Of Visability! Important! Please take a look!

Post by Kljopa » 06 Oct 2007 07:56

From my point of view there is a large problem in our sport.

People cant see the small pretty often dirty therefore dark bag.

Ok maybe we dont care to use highly visible bags for regular session.Even though if you play in a crowded place you should do so.

What could be the solution? Glowing bags? Or just Extra large bags with bright colours? Something like larger than a sandbag orange coloured bag?

If people could see it clearly they would understand whats happening more and therefore get amazed and have respect/love for our sport.

Any ideas?

Maybe if we found a filler that reacts when force is applied to it, giving off light, that would work. We could use the piezoelectric effect to our advantage.

The problem is, visibility. We cant see the flashes if the bag itself is blocking it.

I had a bag of complete flash green(I think?) that could easily play with at night, and lots of people commented how bright it was and easy to see... It was like a miniard tennis ball! :P

so it was made from facile?

A couple of those bags would be really nice to obtain.Going to do shows at night clubs, these would come in very handy.

If you watch someone shred from a distance it looks like they are dancing around.

that's really the biggest problem of our sport.
once a guy told me i should make a show to cowboy-music. i was like "WTF?!". five minutes later he came back and told me, "ah. sorry. didn't see the ball".
also, another time, alex and i did a show at a ball. after the show, we continued to play a bit. all of a sudden one guy came up and told us, "that's very cool what you're doing. unfortunately nobody can really tell what you're doing, because the ball is so dark and tiny.", pulled out 100 € and told us to find a solution for that problem. 8O
i mean footbag's only really fun to watch if the spectators can see what's going on. i think it's also important that the bag is not super small. so far for visibility i think that red-yellow is the best colour-combination.
i'd love to know more about the flash green though. if facile came in flash colours, that would be the solution...

i think more people should comment on this. footbag will never get more popular and recognized as a sport if we don't find a way to actually show people what we're doing!!

Im happy that you totally understood me Verena!

This needs some serious thinking and stuff.Maybe stitchers have some ideas.

It is stupid that only a few people commented in this thread.

You bring up a good point and this had been discussed before, I don't think we've found a solution.

Pls see Jorden's topic about it:
http://www.modified.in/footbag/viewtopic.php?t=15154

Item#3 in Jorden's post is in regards to the bad visibility of the bag.

Freedom Footbags has the glow footbag called the "Nighthack"
Image
It's pretty big, about the size of a sandmaster. That coupled with the battery makes it hard to actually shred with, I'm able to do about 10 tiltless with it. You can't really shred at your full ability level with it.

There was talk about lobbying fields fabrics to create neon/bright colored facile. I'm not sure if anyone tried that and if it would work.

As you can see there isn't really a good solution to this problem. I think all players are aware of the problem, but until someone thinks up a good solution, we're stuck :(

Some kind of invention should be done.

It should be cheap to make, and quite shreddable.

I believe footbag performers should wear all of the same colour clothing as well, the highest contrast from the bag itself. Playing on crazy-patterned carpets and backgrounds also makes the bag get lost.

Reflective paint? Flourescent paint and a blacklight?

I remember a footbag DVD where the bag was highlighted digitally. Which one was that? Champions League?

while this is an important thread, i think the reason you got so many few comments is the fact that people ALSO play for themselves, and maybe arent in front of a lot of people all the time. I know i for one play more alone than i do around people, so bright colored bafs( although good) are not a huge deal to me. If people are interested enough into footbag to learn then they can ask me. ;)

this has also been talked about a few times before. no need to hype this thread so much. everyone knows the answer- use brightly colored bags if you have them, and even better bags with long, visible spikes. and just dont worry about the people that only see footbag from a distance...they're just like the people that walk by while you're tying your shoes, or catching your breath, they have no idea why you're wearing short shoes and/or breathing hard; and they are subsequently just like the hundreds of thousands of people that have never seen footbag at all.

Just break open a light stick and dump it on a bag.

Wow that's actually a good idea. I may do that sometime. That would be so awesome to kick a really glowy bag like that at a show.

i think it's too easy to say "well. this has been discussed before. unfortunately there's no solution (or just wear same colour clothing, etc)."
i know that this topic has been discussed before. i also know that i talked with people in person very often about that problem. well, to me there never really was a good solution.
-the glow-in-the-dark-footbags aren't a good solution. we tried that once. on the one side the bag is hard to control and on the other side the room where you are performing in has to be very dark (and that's often impossible).
--> for me that's not a good solution
-wear clothing in the same colour: well, i often do this (or at least single-coloured clothes). it helps, but it's not the solution.
-the footbag itself. so what colour-pattern do you think is the best? i think it's yellow-red. do you think that bag-stitchers should make 32-panels, but really big? what about the flash-colours?

@ben: yeah, i think that's the problem, everybody is aware of it, but everbody gives up. i actually also gave up, but it's a very good point, and maybe some people have some new ideas. that especially goes to the stitchers.
@slapdash: for playing generally in public places i agree with you. there's a big difference to footbag-shows though. if people actually saw what's going on and how hard footbag is, footbag and the shows themselves would gain in popularity.

What if a small lamp with a battery would be inside a footbag and could be turned on through material?

It wouldnt be very shiny, but it would add some effect...

I definitely see the merit of this discussion, but I was going to make a post, basically saying what Zeb said in his previous post. Do you really want to play with a bag that has a battery and light inside of it every time you play in public? I don't. I would rather have fun and play with a bag that I like in colour and size.

Not every time :)

But for shows for sure i would with a bag like that.

I would play with a bag of a tennis ball sized everytime.

I want the sport to be popular in my country.

I currently have like 1/8 of a yard of Neon Yellow (looks to be the same colour as a highlighter)
Im a beginner-novice stitcher that is interested in trades/possibly making a little coin, I dont have a digital camera at the moment I need to invest in one so I can market my stuff, but if you are interested in a highly visible bag I have a fair ammount of flashy colours and Im willing to part.
