Isilwar wrote:Two year post.

It's my footbag anniversary tomorrow. June 3rd . I'm really not the kind of person to write super long posts about what footbag is to me, but I feel like I should. And I have the time.

3 years ago, June 3rd would just be another summer day spent playing video games. Or chatting to hawt babes that are 5 years older than me online. But 2 years ago, I went to my first footbag tournament. I sincerely thought I was hot shit and that I was just going to dominate this tournament with my awesome New Balances and butterfly kicks. As Cody's mom drove up to the pavilion that had a bunch of hackers and Jose Cocolan, the first real footbag trick I saw was DATW. I probably turned white, and I got really nervous.

Jose was cool though. We signed up and did the competing thing. I think Cody and I spent the whole tournament trying to hit clipper, and feeling sort of successful when it would kind of roll from our ankle and magically appear back in our hand. Jose was encouraging though, and I think that if he would have blown us off and played by himself or something, I wouldn't be playing now. It was inspiring, and after the tournament I was seriously hooked.

If you haven't already noticed, I joined modified on June 4th. I learned about fizzied there (the Kansas Open) and I was so excited to get on a forum for people just like me. I think that was the Runescape player in me, wanting to interact with a bunch of people who did the same thing as me all day. Ugh.

In one of my school papers, I cited footbag as my anti-drug. I sincerely guarantee you that if I didn't play footbag, I would be a stoner like half of my school. That is sort of ironic, since footbag tournaments are the most that I have been around drugs.

Worlds, NYJ, and GRASS have been the best times of my life. By far. Worlds was 10 days of pure awesome – what a first tournament. It gave me that fuzzy feeling, you all know it. NYJ was the first time I really truly met Dave. The sauna room was great. That sounded sort of gay, and it sort of is. GRASS and NYJ are a tie for my favorite tournament so far. Matt really made GRASS special I think, he's become sort of like a best friend or something. If you read my GRASS write-up, you'll understand.

Footbag has really impacted my life though, and I owe a lot to it. When I get a real job, I promise to donate some of my money to the IFPA or something. There aren't a lot of things in most people's lives where they just wake up thinking about something, and then fall asleep at the computer talking to somebody about that thing.

I remember one night talking to Dave on AIM, and he commended me on staying at it (footbag) for so long. That felt like a weird thing to say to me, since 2 years really isn't that long, and also because I've never even thought about quitting.

It's hard to express how much I love footbag. It's a lot though. Onto a few thank you's:

Jose C. - THANK YOU for coming to Wichita 2 years ago. It was a great experience and I wish you still played regularly – you are good.

Cody C – Thanks for being my shred partner. You've really pushed me. Sometimes I get really mad when you hit something that I can't. You quantum ducking freak. ;) Have fun in Idaho.

My School – For either completely rejecting footbag or completely loving it, I appreciate it. It inspired me a lot to get better. Impressing my friends, while it is a sort of shallow thing to say, is one of the main reasons I played (not so much anymore)

Cleaver – Oh man. You're such a huge inspiration. I almost cried at Worlds when you went dropless and screamed after your final routine. Thank you for playing, thank you for putting up with me ceaseless fanboy-ness, and thanks for being and awesome dude on top of all of that. You're one of my favorite people I've met in footbag.

Jay – Thanks for being so nice Jay. You're really good at footbag, and it makes me jealous when you hit shit like 104 ducking clippers or 64 contacts of Smear>PLO. When you figure out how to just throw that stuff into runs, you're going to just explode all over the scene, I guarantee it. Plus that patching tape has been pretty useful. ;)

Aleksei – Thanks for being from Estonia and playing footbag. I sort of compete with you in my brain, I'm not sure if you knew that.

Matt K – I hope you have the biggest paragraph. I really do think you are my best friend. I hope that doesn't soun too gay, but I dunno. I look forward to talking to you every day, and almost every one of my highlights are influenced by you somehow. You're really good at footbag too. I hope you just completely take over the east coast scene, and everyone bows to you or something. You'll get a hug to make up for the rejected one at GRASS.

Done. 2 years, yay.

sure thing, i'll always be there for you as your shred partner....well except this summer... and we didn't really get to shred much since NYJ, but still. it's awesome that 2 years ago today we were at our first competition.
I'm having a great time in idaho so far, i think you'd like it here. it's a little cooler and not humid, basically better shred weather. i played with Zeb the other night and spent the night at his place. By chance i've been within probably a couple hundred feet of his place like 5 of the 6 days i've been here either working, eating, driving by, playing disc golf, ect. i hope you go to the U.S open so we can shred some this summer. i'll probably ride there with Jim, Daryl and Zeb. freedom shredquarters is 5 miles from my house too. anyways hope you have a good time at the Kansas open this year. you wouldn't mind mailing me the shirt you get for me there would you?

Mike Toolan is still good at footbag.

Eric Chang offered to drive down to De Soto yesterday from Green Bay, and then road trip it with me to the US Open.

THAT is why I love footbag.

My shins hurt too bad to play for real today. I did screw around for an hour, mostly adjusting spins and softening up pdx whirl.

I was hoping for a drill session too. :(

Congrats on two years. It's around that time for me too, but I guess I have a month. I don't know what to think. Probably just more of the same bullshit.

But you, keep it up. You play as much in one day than I play in a week. You're playing as much as I bet cleaver did, therefore you could be as good as him. woot

Thanks man. Really I'm not much different than you. No one lives near me that plays seriously. You just have to push through it and watch lots of videos. If you want a friendly rival or something we can chat on aim and stuff - that really helps me.

Appreciate it though. :)

Played. My shins didn't hurt as bad but I tried to treat them gently anyways. Also got a couple clips.

- Revup>String with Pixie ss Swirl bsos (the bsosing one got cut off in the clip...)
- Whirl War 8 contacts. Done it, but I've got a clip of it and I want some feedback on anything that might need to be changed.
- 64 contacts pickup>ss pickup

Back from the footbag show. It went alright. I did it for some bible school kids. They were all pretty young, but it seemed like they enjoyed it. There were at least like... 75 of them?

Also this hot chick from school watched. 8)

I kind of built up the intensity, talking about kicks and such and then moved up into busting out a string ending on pixie paradon. I didn't drop. They really enjoyed it, I tried to keep them involved and such. I hope some of them start playing hack or something. :P

when did you do a footbag show? and i haven't had too many real shred sessions but around here when anyone pulls out a bag within a minute or 2 you can have a circle of about 10 people with people coming and going. there's alot of guys at my church here that are really good at kicking and have some basic stalls. but of course you get the line " i've been playing for over 6 years...how do you do that!" yeah the crazy thing is i'm within like a couple hundred feet of zeb's place like almost everyday. like last night i was at a hotel across the street watering plants til almost 2 in the morning. that would be cool if you roadtripped to the u.s open. it's about 6 hours from me.

Thanks Ben and Aleksei. ;)

I did a footbag show today, Cody. It was at my dad's church. That's cool there are some pretty good hackers there. Get to shredding, though! You gotta catch up to me!

I'm not sure about US Open yet, it's likely and unlikely at the same time.

Session highlights:

- Blurry Drifter bsos, 3 times. The camera cut it off before I got the second one every time...
- This super long string that ended on catacomb. A great feeling trick to end on.
- My one shot was awesome today.

me and zeb went to the park to play a round of disc golf today. we ran into jim penkse and daryl genz while we were there too. Zeb has been playing a ton to get ready for the u.s open. i've only had a few sessions since i got to idaho. tomorrow zeb's coming to nampa so we are all gonna have a good shred session. you should drive here, stay in boise a few days with zeb or something and then continue on to the u.s open. How was the Kansas footbag open? i think your at it right now.

nice. good job zac. i played footbag with zeb, jim, daryl, sunny, and dylan today. one park session after playing disc golf and one at the freedom shredquarters. but it sounds like you had a lot of fun. you guys should defintely at least finish the trip up to the u.s open with us if you come. but i bet you could get some crash space around nampa or boise for a few days before too, there are several good disc golf courses and a lot of great footbag here.
