Ners' Footblog
What's up modified, here's an update on stuff that's happening in my life right now. On Sunday I had a sports day, as I began the day with some frisbee tossing, which was fun and I also learned some new throws
Later on I met my other friends and we played some epic basketball, on slightly lowered hoops - that meant sweet dunking and alleyoop action. I remember hitting a between-the-legs dunk and laying down some tight blocks
After we finished playing, since my friends asked and I had Lavers on, I took my footbag and did some tricks - the highlight was busting Criticall Mass first try
I also showed them Nemesis which they liked.
The next few days were painful, as I once again realized that playing footbag doesn't prepare you upper body for intense workout. My legs were fine but all the rest transformed into sore hell
Nevertheless Wojtas managed to convince me to have a shred session, which was devoted entirely to practicing our doubles routine. We still don't have everything done, but I like what we made up to this point.
Which brings me to next thing - Todexon 9. We're leaving on Friday, and it's going to be a great weekend. I'm really looking forward to some shred, 4 square and the tournament vibe

I'm back from Todexon, and if you want to read a write-up, then you've come to the right place
We arrived in Prague on Friday (we meaning Olaf, Rożo, Maciek, Michał and Arek), and soon after leaving the bus we met up with Jana who led us to the Telocvicna gym where a supposed shred session was about to happen. When we got there there was only Hania and Ales, but soon more and people flocked. I remember shredding a little bit with Olaf and Maciej Bujko, and some squares with Rożo. After finishing our match I noticed some new players in the gym including Steve Goldberg and Jim Penske. I said hi and convinced Steve to let me practice my new trick shots on him. It turned out he's been practicing, but if I remember correctly I won the first two games, and Steve won the third one. It was pretty tight. We decided to call it a day, and for the rest of the session I watched Jim rip it up in a circle with Taishi Ishida and... someone else I forgot.
We got our stuff and left the building heading towards the pub where we were supposed to register ourselves. It was a nice place, there was a room reserved for us, and after doing the formalities (there were some nice T-shirts for sale, but I didn't get one because they were quite expensive) we bought some beer and chilled. The players booklets that were given away at the registration had photos of Vasek, that were made for the poster, but didn't make the cut, one of them was Vasek with big grin, it was really funny
Anyway, I talked with Jim a lot and he told me lots of interesting stuff about footbag in the USA, some stories about himself and other players. It's always great to hear stories like that, and I learned some new things I didn't know before, like how you could be kicked in the shins for self-serving in the old days
When it got late we left the pub, went straight to Michal's place and crashed.
Saturday started at about 13:00 (that's 01:00 PM I think?
) at the Club Bordo. The place looked promising, with an players area, that consisted of four rooms and a regular club with a lighted up stage and a solid sound system. We left our stuff in one of the rooms and started to enjoy the tournament vibe in it's fullest. I think I kicked a bit with a young (he looked 12 or something like that) Czech player, and tested my Czech language knowledge with satisfactory results. More people were arriving, so I exchanged hellos, feeling proud when a couple of them mentioned that they liked my last movie
Soon a judging workshop started, we went through some standard stuff and then Ales presented the new system that was supposed to be used for Sick3 and BigOne. It turned out the system wasn't tested at all, but I'll come back to this. After the workshop was finished the first routines started with a bit of a delay. It went fast, Intermediate, Women, and Open. At first there was supposed to be three rounds, which me and some other players considered a bad idea (not so many players etc.), but what was decided was decided. I was playing in the last pool, right before Jim, and my routine went ok (I think I had 4 drops). When the results were announced I found out I got through. The delay was increasing, so after a short break the BigOne and Sick3 was done, and we also learned that there was no semifinals. In BigOne I managed to hit Symp. Whirling Pdx Drifter, and there were some even bigger tricks, like Yves's Nuclear Torque or Olaf's Blurry Mofly. I didn't hit anything in Sick3. Olaf hit Fusion > Food > Marius I think, and was super close to Nemesis > Food > Gangsta. Jim did a standard Beast with Whirlygig > Whirlwind > Spender, it was sweet nevertheless. At this point there was a longer break scheduled, so I played some 2 Square, using the new rules (three contacts only) and had one of the most epic matches ever against Wiktor. Then we went to eat something but had to go back fast, as I still had to play Doubles with Wojtas and do my final routine. When we got back it turned out that Intermediate finals were canceled because there was not enough time. I thought that was pretty unfair for the people who registered for the whole price of 400 crowns. Anyway, me and Wojtas got warmed up and did our routine. There was ( *drumrolls* ) an outstanding number of two teams total, so we fought bravely and got second
Then the finals rolled in, I played a bit worse then in the semifinals and finished on 7th place. Vasek didn't compete in anything because he had a demo of some sort in Vienna and was out of shape I guess. Jim ripped it with his routine to System of a down - Chop Suey, and I liked it a lot, even though I would consider that a perfect routine song
He had 2 drops and won. Milan was 2nd with a solid show, and then Tina, who surprised everyone with a very controlled performance synchronized to the music.
After the routines were done, we went to the players area and formed a circle with me, Olaf, Jim and Maciej Bujko. It was pretty cool, there was lots of people cheering, and not really much free space. I played pretty bad (no surprise there
) and Jim busted hard stuff pretty much every run. The most memorable combo was Double Blender > Swirling Torque. The crowd went NUTS after Jim caught the bag
When Jim decided to call it a day, the crowd mysteriously dissapeared
but I decided to shred a little bit more with Maciej and also Andrew McCargar who joined us. About then I found out my bag was missing :/ And not only mine, Rożo's bag, that was lying right next to it was gone as well. Sucky. To make things worse my other bag got some holes, so I didn't have anything to shred with. Thankfully Rożo still had one spare with him so I wasn't doomed. The award ceremony soon started, and I got a diploma for my 7th place in Open and some bonus stuff for the Doubles. There were no results for Sick3 and BigOne, they were not announced the next day, and they are not on the website today. I still don't know how I placed. Anyway, Taishi had the best entrance ever, when he got up on the stage for his 4th place, he pulled out his telephone/camera/futuristic device and recorded the audience cheering for him haha. That rocked. After the award ceremony ended Vasek did a demo with Honza, he was beatboxing, doing Whirrs and Double Spins, standard stuff
That pretty much concluded the first day.
The second day was pretty much a jam. Dexter arrived in the beggining and said, that the Circle Contest was cancelled, because it would be too much work. At first we stayed outside, shredded and played squares (Oxana is really good), but soon the wather got worse so we moved into the gym. I recorded a little bit of Doubles with Ales, I hope to get some more footage and make a Doubles video. Vasek shredded a bit, but he wasn't busting very hard. Fortunately there was Jim, who did great as the Guest Star, shredded a lot and showed lots of professionalism and awesome skill. He's the man.
After leaving the gym we went to eat something, and an absurd situation occured, as we ordered our meals, and the last person got their order after like, two hours? We were so angry. On the other hand we had lots of time to talk. I talked with Oxana about the situation of footbag in Russia, and also got to know Taishi more - he's super cool. I learned lots of stuff about Japan from him, I really hope to visit it one day! It was definitely a big highlight of that tournament, talking with people from all those countries and learning things from them. After we fihished eating, and went out, we said out goodbyes and went back to our place, accompanied by Hania, Ales and Ville Lakso. Ville told me about his studies in Berlin and shared with what he knew about the Finnish scene. Unfortunately we had to part soon and that was the end of Todexon 9.
The weekend was really cool, as I predicted, even though there were some bad things about the organization side, the players made up for it. Big thanks to the Dictators for putting their effort into having a tournament for 9 years straight, that really means a lot. Also thanks to everyone I got to shred, talk and hang out with. Worlds are going to be huge!

Today I had my second session since Todexon. The reason for the break was me getting sick and being unable to shred. The session before, I was mostly getting my balance and rhytm back, doing basic combos and tricks. Still, I managed to hit a new 7 adder, which is Pdx Chainsaw Massacre
. I footed it on Todexon, so it felt nice nailing it. We stopped playing early, because Radek suddenly got a terrible headache.
Today the session was longer, and also more hardcore, since Marcin Bujko arrived to rip it up. We formed a circle with him, me and Radek and freestyled for a good hour. I remember having some runs with good variety, but nothing really stood out. Later Marcin decided to school some stuff on the side, so Radek gave me some challenges, and I hit one that I was happy about, but I forgot what it was
One thing I do remember is hitting 25 Drifters.
My mother is an instructor of Qigong "Flying Crane", which is a style of chinese health exercises, and she is organizing a workshop here in Wrocław. That means that right now, sleeping in my room, there is a professor of university in Pekin, the master of the Flying Crane style, Liu Zhongchun himself. How random is that?

Thanks for the props! The chinese professor is 73, so we didn't really hang out much haha. Still I showed him The Triptych and I guess he liked it. He said, that in China they play a kicking game (like circle kicking) with a coin that has a hole in the middle and some wool tied around. It turns out it's a sport played both by young and older people.
Ok session today, I didn't hit 40 Drifters for Kljopa, but I'll try it tommorow (if I don't forget), but I did hit, in first try ever:
Kilo (Miraging Double Switch Over)
On a previous session I also hit Ducking Mirage > Atomsmasher (rpt), which made me feel like Daryl "The Man" himself. Oh, I also hit Atomic DLO, which is a trick I wanted to hit for a long time. Now I've finally hit Atomic DLO/Egg, and Quantum DLO/Egg. Not both sides though.
Agata hit her first DLO and was close to flipside. Today she was getting very close to Drifter on both sides. I think she should be able to land it soon.
Yesterday, when I was driving back home, I saw dozens of bullfrogs jumping around on the streets near my house. Five minutes later it started to rain. 1:0 for the frogs!

Highlights from today:
clip set Symp. DLO > ss Symp. Whirl (rpt)
Barfly > DDD > Torque (rpt)
I also hit Atomsmasher > Torque > Buttefly > Pdx Mirage (rpt) which was kinda neat, cuz my Toe Torque are not the hottest thing in town. Agata wanted to see Spanishfly, and I managed to hit it BS, even though I haven't tried it for a long time. Later me and Radek played combos, and he beat me to Drifter > Gyro Clip > Pdx Torque
I shall have my revenge Radek!

Me and Marcin Bujko did a demo today, for the Academy of Economics. I thought it was going to be some kind of a bigger gig, but it turned out to be a small (for 15 people or so?) show, done outside, not really organized. Anyway we did our best and told them lots of stuff, from the history of footbag worldwide and in Poland, through the add system and how competitions work, to the general philosophy behind the game. I think they liked it a lot, and probably they will also ask us to perform next year.
After the demo we decided to have a session, and it was short but sweet. Marcin was throwing down lots of his usual tripless madness with stylish Far Symple Swirls all around the place. I did some Ducking, Drifter and DLO variations. Overall speaking, it was a good footbagy day.

Had a nice session with Hania and Agata yesterday. One new drill was hit by me, and it was Rev-up > Paradon (rpt). I remember reading about ptaku hitting that combo and being impressed. Too bad he doesn't play anymore.
Since Hania forgot about her blog
I will write for her, that she hit Whirl > Ducking Clipper (rpt) and Ducking Clipper > Drifter BS. Also, Agata surprised me by hitting Clip > Osis > Infinity > op Clip > Osis > Infinity. Sweet!
I'm having another session soon, it should be EPIC

The session was a little bit epic. Why not fully-blown epic, you ask? Well, mostly because of the wind. Still Agata, Olaf and me had a solid circle which made the spectators envy of our skills. One new thing from me:
clip DLO > Drifter (rpt) > Symp. DLO > Drifter (rpt) > run
I also remember one run with DLO and Pdx DLO BS, Smog, Haze, Fog and Gyro DLO. Other then that I worked on my Rev. Swirls and hit 13 on my strongside and 7 on flip. In the middle of the session my right knee started to hurt, so I had to stop playing for a while. In the end of the session both of my knees hurt, and now, as I'm writing this, only the left one. I noticed that when I play regularly my knees are fine, but when I have a break, then during the first few session they hurt. Probably something to do with the knee joint fluids.
Agata hit Infinity > ss Butterfly (rpt), and received well deserved props.

Spinning Ducking Pdx DLO
Goliath
Ducking Pdx Mirage > Torque (rpt) > run with Pdx DLO > Torque > Pdx DLO
Blender > Pdx Whirl > Barfly (rpt) - challenge from Agata
Rev Swirl x23 strong and x22 flip
Other then that I practiced Dynos and Spinning Ducking. I'd like to hit Spinning Ducking Pdx Mirage > Plasma (rpt), but it's out of my reach. I need to practice Spinning Ducking more, and then I should be able to hit it. I also did 66 Osii, which might be my personal best. It would be good to hit 100. At the end of the session I tried Drifters, but I was too tired to hit more then 15.

Today me and Budzik did a demo for a student exchange program, that was organized by some kind of a church organization. It went well, since both of use have lots of experience we were able to get the audience into it, and to appreciate how technical footbag is (some of them did hit some Toe Stalls though
).
After the show there was a cool moment - one of the girls asked us if we have some "harder" music - it turned out she was doing a Poi show (if you don't know what Poi is, check out http://youtube.com/watch?v=2IjdnMvBW_A). Last week I had a chance to learn some basic Poi movements, so I decided to show my skills. Soon I did the 3 tricks I knew
and handed the Poi back to their owner. She was surprised that we can do other things then footbag. When she was just about to start spinning, Budzik came to her with an innocent smile, and asked if he can try it too. She said sure, and that she can teach him some fundamental moves. When Budzik started spinning, I got this vague memory in my head, there was him practicing Poi at some previous footbag tournament. I was right and soon Budzik started his dance, trick into trick, figure into figure, all with upmost precision and control. The crowd looked at him in awe, and when he finished there was a massive applause. The girl had nothing more to add.
After the show I went to see Antek Szczeniowski (the guy that started footbag in Poland) to give him a Net Set I was storing at my house. We talked about how are things going, and I also called Kierpca, since I haven't spoke to him in a while.
Lastly, a photo. Please keep in mind, that those things in the air are NOT stars

I finally got to shred on Saturday, and since Bujo wanted, I took my camcorder with me. Thanks to Rożo I had 14 minutes of material, so I made a short, raw style movie featuring me and Bujo. As they say, one picture is worth a thousand words, right?
