Hey Ivan! It was great to meet you a Worlds! I really enjoyed playing with you and watching your atomics. Great job on all the progress and dedication. I will keep up with your blog and will use the reading opportunity to keep up with mine. Also, your bags are awesome!

Andrew! It was great kicking with you as well! I must say, you ( and a few others) have made me rethink my opinion of fairy sets and make a push to drill them alongside pixies. I hope to be posting more regularly here (with stuff more interesting than just "hit 10 consecutive clippers") Once I get out from under my pile of orders, I would love to trade for one of your bags if you would like to (I know some stitchers don't trade so I will understand if you don't want to).
Here's to getting better at footbag! Going to Worlds was the best investment that I could have made for my game.

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Whoa. One week of school has gone by. The PSU club is exploding.
Let me expand on that. We have been having sessions every other day in a very visible public area, with nice loud music and a white board with the club name, kicking times, and contact info. Since we have done this, we have had about 10 people come up to us and say that they wanted to join and to get better at footbag. Most of them come from a hacky sack background, which is great because they have a foundation to work from, but also challenging because there are certain bad habits that you need to break for them to be successful at footbag. I have been spending the majority of the last few sessions going from circle to circle, teaching toe stalls and other basics like insides and clippers, as well as throwing in tips on form and sometimes demo-ing tricks on request. It really is gratifying seeing someone come in at the beginning of a session with basic kicks and leave with stalls and a desire to learn more. Even if just one out of the 10 people I teach becomes hooked and keeps playing, it will be worth the effort. Aside from the passerbys, we had someone join the club who was actually LOOKING for a FOOTBAG CLUB! That never happens! Her name is Kat and she knew a bit about footbag and found us through the PSU club listing. Her first session was yesterday, and I must say that holy crap, there is so much potential. In a few more sessions, I will ask her to make a footblog on Modified to record her progress. Now that we have 2 girls in the PSU club, I think more will (be less hesitant?) to join, so it is a step in the right direction for our sport.
On to personal stuff.
I have been doing demos a lot. I don't think I have put together any difficult strings lately, just been doing tiltless with some 3s and 4s when I get bored. Have also been drilling solo and with other people (getting those BOP drills down)
tiltless run lasting 2:25 ... demo'd for a group of students, got the comment "this dude can't drop"
hitting BOP drills a lot
ripwalk >ripwalk and atomsmasher have become demo favorites and I can hit them almost at will
ran out of ideas during a demo, said "I am gonna do a really hard trick for you guys" and footed toe illusioning flail. people's jaws hit the floor
working on my whirls. Toolan is a beast at them so I am getting tips from him.
probably forgetting everything important, but w/e
Also, our apartment's announcement board is getting quite silly nowadays. At least my intentions are clear! WHIRLS!

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Dude, you're killing it. I can't believe the highlights you're listing. Super amazed at the 2:25 string. And I already expressed how I feel about you taking the club in only the right direction this year. Still cant believe it... 15 numbers handed to you in only 1 week. I really hope they all stick with it, and like you said, even if 1 sticks with it, that will still be so sick. Keep annihilating dude. Cant wait to read this blog when East Coast comes closer, because I suspect that you're going to be tearing it and improving by big chunks every week.
See you before East Coasts, hopefully!

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Thanks dudes. Mike, the whirls are being neglected unfortunately... and it pains me to say this, but I just don't have any incentive to work on them at this point. Maybe in a few days when I hit some of my goals, I will turn my attention to them again. Also, symp whirls. I like them so much more than normal whirls (although I promise I will get good at normal whirls)
Anyway, I haven't updated in a week, and it seems so much has happened. On Wednesday, Mikie stopped by and kicked with the PSU crew. Man, it was awesome to play with him and it really motivated me to get into the "lets get good for ECFC" attitude. During that session I didn't really hit anything too great, just some of my basic tiltless stuff as I had already been kicking for some time when he showed up. I did get one string that was 35-40 contacts, mostly guiltless with a few two add bails, and with atomsmasher, ripwalk > ripwalk, blur, legbeater, and blizzard. I also bailed to osis and didn't drop, so that is a nice sign.
After that session, I really wanted to drill solo ( club sessions are so fun and I love teaching people new tricks, but sometimes you need time to just get into your own game and pound out some drills and new tricks). Friday night at 10:30pm I went out to a lit outdoor space and had at it. I was joined by Kat and Marc (who was taking a day off and just gave tips) and we drilled for a solid 2.5 hours. I ended up helping teach Kat mirages (which she hit on both sides, along with butterfly), and drilled them alongside just to show how they look. Ended up hitting:
mirage > legover for 71 contacts
illusion > legover for 112 contacts
infinty x 36
DOD! I have hit this before, but it never felt this good. I think I hit it 7 or 8 times that session
Ended the session by footing blurriest twice. UGH. That is a fun trick to go for. Didn't spend too much time on it though.
Anyway, Ben and April showed up to the session and we ended up going back to our apartment for some beers, footbag videos, and 2 square. Then Kat left and Ben and I shredded for another 2 hours (ended our session at 3:00 am) I taught Ben atomics, and drilled mirage>atomsmasher, legover>atomsmasher, and illusion>atomsmasher.
Saturday. The group session at Old Main. Let me preface this by saying that Old Main is one of my favorite places to kick. It is much more sheltered and scenic than the HUB, and the people who pass by are usually less belligerent towards us. We had 8 people show up, which is an average turnout these days. Marc hit 3 new 4 adds on both sides about 10 minutes into the session (after I challenged him), and everyone else had some solid stuff. I had some average strings, 20ish contacts mixed tiltless and guiltless, with some cool 4s in there. I started working some infinities into my strings which felt really nice (and way overdue) I also hit DOD > Blur, which was cool. Unfortunately I had to leave after an hour of kicking to go to work, but that session still made my day. Nothing, not even hitting cool new 6 adds can beat the feeling of friendship and enjoyment of kicking with our club. Every session feels like a mini jam and every circle has something to offer. There is also nothing like dispensing tips and seeing a person's game improve immediately as they adjust their sets/movement/stalls/ect. Honestly, I have no idea what I would do myself if I had not seen Nick Polini playing footbag at the HUB two years ago. I would be missing out on some of the best times of my life.
Now for the immediate future: I am hosting a laver modding session at our apartment at 2:00 today (we have a few people with new shoes who need them modded) so I should probably go to sleep soon. Also, another special guest is coming up the PSU on Wednesday... It's a secret that I will not divulge until they show up. Footbag is so exciting right now. People at the club are getting good, and I can get away with kicking for extended periods of time without my legs hurting the next day. PSU Footbag Represent.

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
not always the funnest way but those drills are how you're going to get good. 112 contacts of ill>legover is fucking great Ivan, especially impressive how dialed illusion is this early in your career. i know im not alone in saying it was the bane of my existence the first few years of playing and now egg beater is probably my favorite basic component, I have no doubt you'll be the same my son.
Cannot wait to see your improvements at East Coasts, sounds like im going to be blown away. DOD>blur is tight.
some challengez:
bubba>ss whirl>rpt
osis x20 (or 40 if thats too easy )
egg>legover rpt
hoag

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Thanks for the props! I love illusions - that inward motion really makes my legs happy.. As for the challenges...
bubba > ss whirl is cool, I just can't hit a good whirl yet
my record for osis > osis is 6... lol. good challenge!
egg>legover rpt is probably the easiest one you gave me.
As for illusions being the bane of one's existence, that is osis for me. As I started out, I really idolized NPipe's illusions and tried to imitate them. Now the illusions are seriously helping my DODs. Eggbeater is so much fun - I really wanna hit symp atomic far egg sometime in the next 3 months. See ya at ECFC dude. I am definitely ramping up my sessions to prepare.

Yeah, Nate's illusions are some of the best in the game.
Props on all the work you're doing with the PSU club. I'm happy to hear it's thriving.

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Thanks Ken!
Have been having some awesome sessions with Nick Polini visiting the club (Weds-Friday).
Highlights:
Stepped out of osis BS
Ducking clipper b2b
Legover > pixie (something)
Infinity x 27 (I know this is lower than my last highlight, but the consistency is really picking up)
Pogo mirage BS
Frontside ripwalk
Pixie XBD Rake
Hopover BS
Reverse hopover BS
Ducking pickup BS
Ducking pdx mirage
Diving clipper BS
Ducking clipper > ripwalk BS
Yeah. Its getting serious here. I have been practicing runs starting with 20 tiltless and then throwing in some 4s in the middle and finishing with 10 contacts guiltless. Also have been kicking every day this week for 2-3 hours and really enjoying it. Started doing some crosstraining with Marc P and feel good. Hope to get some core strength and upper body muscles in the process. Anyway, footbag is absolutely fantastic right now and I cannot be happier with how my game is progressing. Still drilling pixies, osis and whirls without much progress, but I think I will have a breakthrough with those tricks soon enough. My strings need them.

Awesome stuff!!! I'm so jealous of the club you guys have there, it's huge!!
I'm definitely in favour of footbaggers spending a little more time on the upper body

Haha, I am sure some of our female spectators might agree with your sentiment. Anyway, my blog needs more pics, so here are a few from today's session:Cassy wrote:Awesome stuff!!! I'm so jealous of the club you guys have there, it's huge!!

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Haha, I will release a video soon... I am currently training hard for east coasts - winter is when I will film more of my game. I believe I will have pixie and osis at that point so it won't just be toe stalls and legover bails
Now for today's session... Yesterday I went on a 8 mile bike ride and hiked a mile or two in between so I was expecting my legs to hurt but everything turned out fine. This session had everything going for it. It was an amazing 65 degrees out, with a wonderful State College blue sky and some clouds floating by. I decided to wear a green polo, because, well why not, it's classy. Then right as I was finishing warming up, Kat brought some amazing cookies from West dining commons for the entire club - they were SOOOO GOOD! I ended up shredding with a cookie in my right hand and my water in my left hand and hit some cool stuff like ripwalk and blur. Then we divided into two circles and started killing it. As we are 2 weeks away from ECFC, I decided to get into my mindset for competition and tailored my strings to that goal, starting with a big trick, going to about 20 contacts of tiltless, and then ending with guiltless stuff. Highlights:
atom>atom> 15 contacts tiltless > 10 guiltless
ripwalk>ripwalk in the middle of a 25 contact string
Blur BSOS and Blizzard BSOS in the same string, lasted about 15 contacts
85 contact tiltless string capped with legbeater>handcatch
toe whirl BSOS
butterfly > pdx mirage x alot (at least 15 contacts)
clipper far legover/pickup is now a safe bail on both sides
tap BSOS midstring
footed blurry whirl... was easier than I thought it would be... whirls still need work though
Yeah, this was a feel good session for sure. Things are on the upswing for sure, and I can't wait to have my ass handed to me at ECFC. It will only make me get better. And getting better is fun. And we play footbag to have fun, right? If footbag isn't fun, you are doing it wrong. ( I will look back at this post when everything goes to shit and shake my head at how optimistic I was, but w/e. Gotta let the happiness out sometimes )
Also, one of my footbag students had a massive session today as well... but perhaps they will post about it once they make a footblog.
Always stay positive Modified, and keep kicking. The best session of your life may just be the next time you play.

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Haven't updated much this week, school is starting to pick up (about as gradual a pick up as a 90 degree vertical wall, but w/e, that's life)
I have been going to the clubs sessions, putting in some decent strings when the bag comes around to me, but its getting kinda stale - 2 adds and bops get boring after 25 contacts. After ECFC I intend to stage an all out assault on ducking, pixies, DLOs and whirls/swirls. Right now I am laying low for a bit because I seem to have this stupid muscle pull in my groin that feels like it goes away after 2-3 days rest but it has come back once or twice already - time to be smart and not ruin ECFC, so I may not kick much this week - I am confident that all of my drilling these past two months will stay with me and that all I will need is a quick dust off on Saturday morning to be back in business. In the mean time, I will be teaching clippers and other basics to club members. Teaching people new tricks (or helping them improve on old ones) is a different kind of gratification than hitting the tricks yourself - it acts almost as a validation to all the time you spent figuring that trick out - the timing, the dexes, the magic hop - when you can describe it to someone who hasn't hit that trick before and they can nail it BS during the session. Time well spent I say.

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)
Footbag needs more people, not just Ivans... more Ivans would be boring.
Anyway, I can't go to ECFC because I have an exam that could not be rescheduled on Friday night and then I have 2 the following Monday... I need this weekend to study. Oh well. At this point, these exams determine whether I can graduate on time, so they are priority over footbag. It's a shame I will miss seeing everyone there, but what can you do.
Better news - I had a low key session where I didn't hit any toe stuff, just clippers, ducking clippers, and some butterflies and osis. My pulled groin didn't act up which is nice, so hopefully I can make a full recovery while still playing footbag. I completely forgot to drill swirls, but oh well.
100 consecutive clippers (on strong side)
71 consecutive clippers (on weak side)
osis > osis x 7
ducking clipper x 4
I intended to use ECFC as a launch point for my drilling to become guiltless, but I guess I can still do that as I intensify my strings and focus on difficulty more. Osis is still hit or miss, but other than that BOPs are already in most of my strings. Yay for progress. Time to get way better though.
