I'm not sure how they did the freestyle football vs footbag battles, haven't seen any footage of that, but I've been thinking a fun comp would be
Oh yeah I forgot about that! Would love to see footage.

Not sure if you've seen it but these little edit was posted up a couple of days ago - https://www.facebook.com/pawel.kot.make ... 233762534/

It looked like a super cool event. I'm trying to get something going in that upcoming comp for the freestyle football. Hopefully that works out, even if it's more of a demo style thing.

Something got me thinking about that mixing of the different sports etc, I was listening to a podcast with a guy who was top rollerblader and also in Heartbreak High, which the was the show of my childhood. (They had a halfpipe in the school and lots of scenes at different skateparks. Trying to think if they ever had any footbag in there, it was the right kind of era and they probably did have some hack circles but I can't remember of the top of my head.

Anyway - https://soundcloud.com/madbeefpodcast/i ... T0KRNchBUs - it was quite a good listen, although probably irrelevant if you weren't obsessed with a mid 90s Australian teen TV show (although I believe that show was quite popular around the world).

They were talking later in the thing about how they used to do a lot of demos with Tony Hawk. One would air over the top and do a big spin, then reverse that on the next trick. He said that Tony Hawk would come and stay on their couch when he visited Australia. (Obviously pre video game fortunes). He talked about one time that there was a demo at Manly (that's something I mentioned recently), and they rocked up and they were known as "the rollerbladers" and the skateboarders used to give them a lot of trouble. Then they rocked up with Tony Hawk to thing and everyone kind of shut up from then on.

That's a weird one actually, and I don't think footbag is seen in that kind of way as something looked down upon, it's just completely ignored from most people - and it's easy enough to ignore. But in rollerblading there is an active negative sentiment. Bodyboarding is a similar case as well.

Not much to report on my own footbag side of things. Maybe that's why I am writing all this other irrelevant stuff. We had a busy day yesterday with a wedding and a birthday party to go to, though I did get in a small kick. It wasn't then but earlier this week I hit spinning ducking motion, which I've done before but not in some time.

Speaking of footbag/football things, here are a couple of videos from me over the years. One is from a long time ago, 10 years ago I guess, and one is from Chile and that's already getting a long way into the distance, just recently it was 5 years since we've been back.

I did some teaching today. Pretty well teaching footbag all day.

At Nico's school.

So they have a specialist PE teacher there, and I filled in for him. In the morning I was on Nico's class. Then later a 5/6 class. Each one had a couple of groups and then I had a split. I was really impressed with some of these older kids. For one they listened to the instructions, but a couple of them had good skill, we had a couple around the world, legover. Couple of soccer players in there and what I was really happy with was the every one in that group had a go.

The kindy kids were a bit more of a handful, but they always are. I probably should have made things even easier, but in general the day went well. Now my legs are sore. I've come in by bike to work in the hostel (busy day, this is probably going to be most Thursdays for me upcoming). I think I've mentioned elsewhere that I've dropped my hours in the hostel so I will look to do more teaching. The lady told me they are really struggling for casual teachers at the moment.

Speaking of people not following the instructions, this other bloke was also relief teacher. I had gone and organised the swap with him - right I will come to the side door of your room, and we'll change the class. Each time it took the class back to the main classroom. Dear oh dear. Worked out OK in the end but a little annoying.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1LnKZgFV24/

I got in a session in my break and actually I was going well. That's the problem with those quick sessions, sometimes you get in a groove and then you have to stop. So I hit that pixie ss eggbeater. That was my first 3 dex trick. A bit of a weird debut, but that was what lined up nicely at the time. That was in 2007, Australian Champs in Tasmania. That was a pretty good one, we were part of a busking festival and had the big stage, good crowd etc. It was also part of a food festival and I got some free food. I am a big fan of free food, which is why I still remember that 12 years on. Although I still clearly remember was that one bloke had given me a good plate of food, then I went along to another stall, I said something like "I got this for free, can you match that price?" And the bloke gave me that kind of look that says I'm going to kill you, but he still gave me a serve of ice cream, so I'll count that as a win.

Hey all. Little while since I've posted. Well, one week exactly I guess. I was teaching again today - preschool this time. I'm not actually qualified for that but they said it's OK for doing a one off type of thing. I showed them a little footbag and they enjoyed that. I think things went a bit better than expected. It was "book week" this week so there were a lot of dress ups and I read a bunch of stories.

Nico dressed up as this bloke called Tashi - http://tashibooks.com/ - I hadn't actually heard of these books until they started reading them in class, but it's a pretty good series. I recently came across a book with seven of the stories in one at one of these street libraries. I'm sure you guys have them around, but there's been an explosion in them lately - people set up an old fridge or dishwasher or something as a mini library and you can swap books or just take a book, put in a book etc etc. Our neighbours have one that's done up as The Hulk Library. Tashi is of course not to be confused with Taishi - but even that similarity is kind of cool.

I've started trying alpine food processor again recently. In my Joulu video from last year I came really close, but I haven't really gone past that point.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1aM3iSFX7U/

I also came close to spinning ducking swirl the other day. Actually, had both those tricks come off my foot. Haven't hit either of them, maybe they will come soon enough.

So on teaching, my goal for this term was to get 20 days of teaching work. Which is 2 days a week. After tomorrow I'll be on 9, so that's just 1 below the target so far.

I'm still working in the hostel so days like these are pretty long. I'll do the same again tomorrow. Unfortunately we'll probably head to Sydney some time in the near future for a funeral. My Grandpa has been really ill for years with dementia, but it sounds like he's on his last days. We went to visit him just over a week ago, he didn't look well, but it was good to make a final visit.

We already have a planned trip to Sydney next week, so it might work out we just extend that or go up earlier, depending on what happens.

Anyway, back to the teaching - there is some potential of a job offer for term 4. I've told them we will travel to New Zealand already, so if that's not going to block things, that could really work out well. So if they offer that, I will take it. If not, nice that they are thinking of me, and that probably means there could be something for next year. Although I am actually kind of keen to leave next year just the same way it is at the moment, and that would lead to me going to Worlds, having a longer trip overseas, etc, etc.

Some good discussion in Derek's blog - good to see him posting again, it's always great to see some of these footblogs pop back up every now and then. And the idea that seems to have a whole lot of credit is to have some kind of "footbag gathering" - not competition, just hang out and shred, drink some beers, see the sights of somewhere.

I guess they did something similar with these training camps long ago in Europe. Although that was probably more serious training. Actually it's basically just an extended idea of what we have done at times here in Aus at Narooma. We have had some good names join us for those ones, though we haven't done it for a long time. Maybe this coming summer is time to revive that idea.

This little clip has a few drifters for TJ - https://www.instagram.com/p/B1XYkYHl2cW/ - I played in the garage last night. Dad spent a few days with us over the weekend and he's built a shelving cabinet. That is going to help clear some space for shred. It's still not really comparable to the old garage, though I think this is going to make a big difference. I was playing in Quantums also. I have a few pairs but I don't use them often because they will probably break soon enough. Well one the sole has already fallen off, so that's probably past the point of no return.

This post is already pretty long, but something Derek posted about getting voted out of BAP gave me a little idea - it would be good to have some kind of "power ranking". Maybe like a monthly thing, could be like a top 5/10 and takes in recent results, videos etc. So you have to keep producing the goods to keep in that ranking. That could be a fun project, and of course everyone would debate it and tell you you are completely wrong.

And I guess that's the whole point of that kind of thing, isn't it?

No, to my great frustration. I'm really close though, I think I'll get it in the next few weeks. I said that last year though, so we'll see about that!

I'm not sure how much weight you would put to video stuff vs comp stuff vs past performances vs "status".

Here's my current top 10 based on very little research, aside from Vasek dominating worlds and Jim posting some pretty crazy stuff consistently all year.

1. Vasek Klouda
2. Jim Penske
3. Lon Smith
4. Christopher Schillem
5. Pawel Nowak
6. Taishi Ishida
7. Rafal Kaleta
8. Maciej Niczyporuk
9. Damian Gielnicki
10. Mariusz Wilk

I haven't seen much from the US Open, nor from Worlds really. So some of this is based on the Worlds results, some just from what I've seen in general in recent months.

It could be cool to do something like this over the course of a year. So I might run that through the next year, using some kind of actual metrics than just gut feeling to measure, though I think the gut feeling takes a big part. I put Chinsen up quite high because anytime he posts something, it really impresses me.

Enough about good players, let's talk about me.

I did a 20x20 session today. I don't think I've done any all year. I was down at the courts, where I haven't played for ages. Lately I've been doing a lot of days where I teach in the morning and then work in the hostel at night. This is really tiring so today I decided to have a break from the teaching.

Instead I got in a pretty good footbag session. Longest run was 60 contacts. I was trying to get some longer runs, but I had quite a few where I got to high 20s or early 30s then dropping on a really easy trick. That's always a pain. On that 60 I dropped on a butterfly.

Here's a trick from yesterday, new trick for me. Pixie diving swirl. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1sPvemFFbv/ In this video I couldn't get the catch, but I did it perfectly basically immediately after posting that and putting the phone away.

Here's one of the 20x20 runs - think it was number 17. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1ukoeXlCRp/

I also got in a quick roll at the skatepark. Actually it wasn't that quick, I stayed quite a long while and had the place to myself.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B1usDq8FSes/

We're off to Sydney for the weekend. In a follow up to the previous post, Grandpa passed away last weekend and the funeral will be on Monday. That works out for us, as we were going to be in Sydney already. We're staying one extra night now.

I got a few new links lately

flip phoenix>reaper
pixie ducking inside>neo op butterfly

came close to ripped warrior>pdx torque

No Kemmer or Landes?

Landes doesn't get to many tournaments and doesn't make a lot of videos. But he's still active, and for both competition and raw shred I'd have him above half that list still:

Those two I was both strongly considering. I think I haven't seen much of Nick in recent times, and Matt I think I would actually put on the list, probably in around 8th place. I was a little swayed by looking at the Worlds results, though he also did pretty well in a bunch of events too.

The idea of the top 10 would be a current moment type of thing - say like the last month or so, factoring in consistency throughout the year. Though in reality to get a proper measure you would really need to be at every tournament, every shred session and watch every video that comes out. Which is not realistic, though you can see plenty of videos and I haven't done my studies enough recently.

In reality we will probably see very little from Vasek in the coming months, don't think there'll be any comps that he'll be in and I don't know if we'll see any video from him, but where will he end up on the list next month, considering his performance at Worlds.

This little thing is actually harder than I thought. It would be good to get some metrics around it to make the list, though that in itself would be hard.

We had the weekend in Sydney just got by. We actually had nearly 5 days there, it was a pretty good trip, even considering that it included a funeral.

The last day I took the kids down to Marobura. I remember I made a video there some years ago. I think this was actually the first video I put together when I got a GoPro. That camera is long gone, so it certainly must have been a way back. It was a birthday present, and my birthday is coming up next week, so must have been about 5 years ago.

The trip to Sydney also included seeing The Butterfly Effect. This is a band I've been going to see for nearly 20 years now, so it's always great to catch up with old friends who have been doing the same, this one was no exception. I also saw the Raiders have a victory in extra time. They are going very well this season so now I've got my eye on a ticket to the grand final. Not sure if they will make it, but it looks like we will already be in Sydney that weekend, so I might just plan on going and either sell the ticket or just go and watch some other teams if the Raiders don't make it.

Here's a little run from Sydney. https://www.instagram.com/p/B15bTJHlOR7/ I think I've got some footage there in a vlog. I don't even remember which one. It's a good spot and the kids had fun playing in the sand/mud/water.

Here's a little something from today. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2AkIiYlrK5/

I was pretty happy with the session. The last couple of weeks I haven't been teaching on Thursdays so that gives me the day free until working at 5pm. So I've been able to do the dropoffs, have a kick, go to a skatepark. Do some of my own stuff, and that's been good. The money from the teaching would come in handy too, but it's also important to make some space for your own things.

I'm feeling pretty tired today, so I might even do the same again tomorrow. I don't really like it when they call you early in the morning, doesn't give you much time to prepare.

I had pixie ducking dlo come of my foot a couple of times. I've never really tried that before, but I have hit a few reasonably similar tricks, pixie ducking symp mirage for example.

New trick.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2TID5DF57L/

Pixie ducking DLO.

I came close to this in recent weeks and was a bit surprised I could even come close. Got it today for the first time. Pretty happy with that one. Will have to try some other ducking DLO combinations. Alpine fog comes to mind. That would be a good one to get. I've done ducking pdx dlo but I haven't done ducking DLO.

I turned 35 the other day. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Li-xuFYrc/ Here are 35 contacts to celebrate. Not so happy with the ducks on the first couple of tricks. Or how long it took me to get 35 contacts. But it was good to get in a kick. I've been kicking a bit the last few days and that's good.

35 doesn't feel so old in footbag terms. There's still guys older than me who are kicking regularly and I'm feeling in pretty good shape. I'm doing tricks that I haven't done before so that's a good sign.

I have been playing in short little bursts, nothing really special lately. I've been sore all over the place recently. I did mention I turned 35 the other day and "no problems" or something like that. Well also Spring started and normally I am sneezing like crazy. I was just thinking that things were going well and now I'm sneezing like crazy...

I had a crash on the skates the other day. That explains the pain in the elbow, and maybe a little bit on the shoulder. It was a bit disappointing because I was having a good session there at the skatepark, then I went to do a 360 over this small bump thing. I was expecting to land coming down the ramp part, but landed on the flat, crash.

Anyway, think I haven't been sleeping well or whatever and there have been little pains here and there. Hopefully that improves. We've got a freestyle football competition up in Sydney next week, should be a fun weekend. It will be a reasonably small turnout but should be a good time all the same. At least we can get a turnout at all, which is more than I can say for the footbag scene. Hopefully we can do something in the summer time, another Narooma would be fun.

I've been teaching quite a bit. Always throwing in some footbag. Something I've started doing, particularly with younger classes - is aim to do 100 kicks and get them to count up to 100. That was something that worked well when I was doing English classes with footbag in Chile.

Had a couple of good sessions in the recent days. I'm going to do a routine as a demo this weekend and I have literally not thought about it since doing the same performance at the same competition one year ago. I haven't had anything to really train for, so I haven't thought about it. Then I thought that a few days might not be enough time to get things together.

I may even just do a one minute routine for the performance, I will see how everything is going. It's going to be a reasonably low key affair I think.

Anyway, got a few good tricks lately. Smog on both sides as been coming a lot easier, although not bsos. I had a cool run that had revup on one side, then whirling swirl on the other soon after that. Then it went with about 20 more contacts of decent stuff.

Also happy with preparations for tricks with the freestyle football. I feel that I am getting some improvement with practice. (Funny that). I am still very bad at the uppers and the sitting down stuff, so we will see if it's worth just completely avoiding that. The funny thing with this, especially in a smaller comp like this year - although highly unlikely, I could win a ticket to Miami. Imagine that.

I won't worry about that though, because it won't happen, but I hope I can win a battle. We'll see how things go. Should be a fun get together regardless. One thing that will determine my mood is the performance of the Raiders on Friday night. I got myself a ticket for the game after a lot more effort than there should have been. If they win, they go to the grand final. If they lose, they go out, and my trip to Sydney that leaves at midnight might just not be such a great one.

I've been looking more about going to Colombia next year. We got some decent money back from tax returns, so that should fund it. Would be good to get some confirmation soon but signs look pretty positive I would say. We are looking at school holidays both here and in Chile, but what it does look like is that I probably won't be able to connect it with a trip to the Copa America, which would have been really cool in itself. Still a bit disappointed to have missed the one in Chile, when they won for the first time.

Got a few vlogs done today. They are just from stuff I had in the backlog and not particularly exciting, a few footbag runs in each one, but nothing wildly impressive. That's all from me today. Haven't really filmed anything of late.

Here's one from the vault. From Cartagena, Colombia. 2012. That's some years ago. As you see from the quality of the video...

Went through the routine with one drop. That was on a pincher, kind of annoying. I wasn't going anywhere near dropless on previous attempts so that was a good boost. Feel a lot better about giving a showing on the weekend now.

Looking forward to that trip. It's school holidays starting up next week so we will spend a few days with my Grandma afterwards.

Been able to get a bit more kicking in lately, and that's good stuff.

Looking at our options to travel next year. Trying to work out if we can add in some extra destinations as well as the South American ones. Maybe to the USA going through Hawaii, or stop in Tahiti/Easter Island. We shall see.

I always found it so annoying to drop on easy tricks in routines. Like, I'd get through multiple hard tricks and links in a routine runthrough, then drop on something silly like pincher or lap catch. I always wondered if that was due to concentration lapses...like I'd know to focus hard on a five add trick, but I'd mentally exhale and underestimate a lap catch. Anyway, I feel your pain.

I wonder when IFPA will announce next year's Worlds location. If it does end up being Columbia, I'll have to give that some serious consideration. If we both go, I'll treat you to some fish tacos

haha on the fish tacos.

Yes, super annoying, and I think that's exactly it, you say to yourself, that's easy, so you start thinking a couple of moves ahead, whereas something harder you really need to focus on that trick and you put a lot of thought into not dropping that, which might have some issues for the next tricks following that.

Those kind of catches like a lap catch or a pincher, you can also just really set the bag in the completely wrong place, and you think, oh it's an easy trick I should still be able to pull it off. And very quickly the bag is on the ground.

I will just say there are some good signs pointing towards Medellin. Can't say too much more than that stage, aside from that I would like to hear an announcement sooner than later, as I'm ready to buy a plane ticket. I don't think there have been any other bids at this stage and you would think it's getting a bit late in the piece to get something off the ground.

And yes, you should come. I had a great time visiting Colombia when I went there, and I can see the Worlds being excellent. Very good facilities there, I know they already have a pretty good relationship with the sports area of the municipality, they do a lot of different events and things. They've got an active club with plenty of players and you would imagine for a Worlds that anybody who has ever played in South America will come out for that one.

So some various things, mainly in the positive.

Number 1, most important news. Raiders in the grand final, and I have a ticket. Not footbag related, but good. It was an awesome vibe at the game last week, probably the best game I've ever been to.

From there I went straight on the bus at midnight up to Sydney, we had the freestyle football comp. With the ball I didn't go so well, but that was kind of expected. In my last battle I was finally getting some consistency, unfortunately that was up against Jay Hennicke, who won the whole thing. No trip to Miami for me. Not that I expected to win, nor do I really have any interest in going to Miami.

More important, I did a footbag demo. A couple of drops in the routine, but what was good was it was a pretty uneven floor and the lighting was really weird. Reasonably small space too, but that didn't make too many problems for me. Also, I hadn't done much practice on that routine, but I think I can build on that for a Worlds performance.

Today I met up with a guy, he runs this outdoor coffee shop on the bike track. I've had him on Facebook for years, because he came by and had a little kick around (maybe 10 years ago), but I don't know him well at all. Well he commented on one of my videos recently and wanted to buy a couple of bags. So I met up with him today and we had a fun kick - more hack style but we had some great rallies with flying clippers and these sort of tricks.

I actually went to a lunch a couple of weeks ago at our old place and we ended up having a fun hack circle there too. A little bit of hack and a little bit of kicking around a ball. Maybe the hack circle is making a comeback. We were talking about how there used to always be big hack circles in Garema Place - and that's one of my early Canberra memories, I would have still been in high school - coming in to the circle and probably doing a couple of moves (I wouldn't have had too many at the time).

So lots of good stuff lately.

Here are a couple of Instagram clips.

Haven't done my collection of Instagram clips for the past month. Might do that in the coming days.

Hello pals.

Looks like we are back in business. Welcome to the new world.

I am planning to do a bit more with the front section, make it a bit more like a footbag news-y sort of things. Probably start with a short weekly update. A new video that's come out, an old video, some comp results, upcoming comps, that sort of stuff.

I might wait until I come back from New Zealand to do anything major. We head off there in a couple weeks. Excited for that. I've lined up to meet up with Phil, he's still pretty injured after a major full on his mountain bike but we should be able to have a kick or at the very least hang out. Then a bit of touring around, a wedding and back again. I'd like to go again for long, I already know we haven't really got enough time on this trip (we're not even going to the North Island for example).

We might stop there on the way to South America next year. I am planning on going to South America and arranging my life around that. I did my first day of teaching for the term today. The kids in the class were very annoying. The whole relief teaching can be a bit of a weird thing sometimes. Also on these days I do the teaching and then come and work in the hostel, so I spend pretty well the entire day at work. I can think of better ways to spend a day.

I did get a chance for a short kick - https://www.instagram.com/p/B3tNhaHFgr3/

Been a while since my last post. Since then I went to the Grand Final, the Raiders lost, which was too bad, but it was still a great experience. It was awesome to jump on a train in Sydney and people say "UP THE RAIDERS" and there's that great sense of camaradarie and you also drink a whole lot of beer. It was a very close match, so fingers crossed they will be competitive again next year. It has been 25 years since the last appearance in a grand final, so I would prefer not to have such a long wait.

yes we are back!

Nice runs in what look like rain boots... The bag made a great sound as it contacted the boots.

Looking forward to working with you on Modified.
