anywho after the massively entertaining read that was C-Fan's blog... I'm kind of inspired to start one of my own.... although I've never been to worlds so there'll be no worlds stories. But anyway I'll post a kind of history of me and footbag

I would've been about 12 or 13 at the time of my first experience with hacky sack or footbag at any time........ this guy was at school and his mum ran the local hippy shop, Shak-ti-ma..... this was the place to get a hacky sack...I remember he brought one to school one day and everyone was having challenges to see who could get the most.... I remember winning the challenge by getting a massive (at the time) 3 kicks, which nobody else could match

anyway.. that day passed and nobody thought anything of it.....later that year my Dad went to Melbourne for some reason (probably work related)

let us now establish where I lived... this was a town called Bega.... about half an hour from the coast and in the country, not much around..pop <5000

but anyway Dad came back from his melbourne journey with a hacky sack each for me and my sister...immediately I was like....ooo this is that thing that Riley brought in to school that day.... and was kicking it... I think that day I may have got to about 10.

but unfortunately it was a long long long time before I discovered freestyle. In hack circles at school I would dominate getting towards year 11 I would consintently to 100 kicks every go, so everyone else cracked the shits with me.....

so this is 4 years later and I still haven't found freestyle...well living in a small country town isn't that conducive to the flow of information....one day I was bored...... *lightbulb* why don't I look up hacky sack on the net
*kazoom* footbag.org
and lo and behold, the first ever Australasian championships are coming up...... they were at the Xtreme Games in Sydney, which...how conveniently....I was already going to

so I ended up at this event...all I knew about this sport was kicking it up and down
the consecutives event was the day before everything got started and I went in that and won...with a big guatamlen hacky..... as a prize I got my self an Aurora...my first real bag

I remember seeing people doing stuff....and I was just like..... this is insane... this is absolutely insane... it was stuff like around the worlds or even double around the worlds..... Lynton Stevens was there...I don't think I've ever been so impressed by something.
One of the first people I met was Ian.... we have both gone on from our meagre beginnings (he's jsut gotten a lot better than me) but he came to the tournament with a few moves.....I came with my toe kick-inside kick combination and that was pretty much it.
At this stage I was kicking in some type of slazenger running show...it seemed to work the trick for consecutives.....and with this magic new bag suddenly stalls became so much easier.

I didn't actually attend much of the rest of the tournament I saw the guys a bit over the course of the games, but was too busy watching some of my favourite skaters (I rollerblade too) going massive.

But this is definitely the turning point of me and freestyle. I went back to Bega with stories of ridiculously insane moves...like this one where they make there foot go round the bag..... TWICE!!!

back in Bega it was the year of my HSC, so a bit of hack was always the de-stress plan....before class, after class, in class, whenever... I was starting to learn a few moves...although not many...it was also hard on my lonesome knowing what was what

I remember posting on Hotsac (RIP) asking what is this trick...it's like you do an around the world but then you catch it on clipper....... which just turned out to be pixie clipper

my next major footbag event was the New South Wales titles which were held at Homebake (an all australian music festival) I was stoked as to get my ticket for a cheaper price due to the fact that a couple of my fave bands... Superheist (RIP) and The Butterfly Effect were playing...although it happened to be at the exact same time. But anyway back to the comp... there were quite a few shredders at this one..... Ian was there again and Jeremy O'Wheel had come up from Tassie....he didn't even have lavers...I think he actually had the same slazengers as me. Lynton and Brendan came up again... they stayed at Ian's house...I ahve a feeling he may have been a bit overwhelmed.
Anyways this was the first time I ever did a run.....and I must say...it was terrible.... I could only do a few to adds, and landed very few of them. I had to go first and as a bribe Steve Ramsey gave me one of his assassin bags.....I think I may have actually used that bag in my run...smart kid...
Later on was the sick 3...... this went even worse than my run....I was so terribly nervous.....I didn't actually hit 3 moves in any of my combos...and it wasn't like I was trying hard stuff... I think my big move was pixie clipper> op butterfly> same butterfly .. but that didn't happen

I think Lynton won yet another event, although my memory kinda fails me... this was back in 2002

anyways I've written quite a lot... and that's still 3 years back...I'll have a bit of a break might post one a bit later

thanks :)

I'll continue it later, there's still more to go

the one in May is looking pretty good...that's the demo for the myfuture careers people.....I've talked to the lady and stuff about it

the one in September I haven't heard much about...I'll hve to email the guy about it

for my current shred level

flipside, it's getting there...my flip pixie set actually exists now (not that often, but it's around sometime)

last time I kicked I was trying for

diving clipper> ducking clipper> flip diving> flip ducking....... I think I got through it once

but my story shall continue in my next post which I may make real soon

I think there are a few key defining points in a footbagger's life and mine were so spread apart

1) first hacky sack- for me this was 97
2) discovery of freestyle- 2001
3) meeting other shredders- same year
4) first routine- 2002
5) getting lavers- 2005
6) first interstate journey for a footbag event- 2005
7) first overseas journey to a footbag tournament- still to come

so if you count hacky sacking.....I've been at it for 8 years

I hate the question "how long have you been kicking for"....same with "how long have you been skating for"....because growing up in a small little town there is minimal inspiration for you to get better....apart from the fact there isn't actually anything else to do.

Anyhoo... back to the story..... Homebake wraps up and Grinspoon play a great set (too bad they suck now) and happy as larry I head off back to Grandma's.

Went on a bodyboarding adventure with my Dad and Grandpa it was good fun....we were camping so I had a lot of time to kick....I don't think I learnt too many new moves

I think at this time my bag of tricks looked something like this

pixie clipper (one side)
pixie
legover
clipper
butterfly
osis (one side)
and I could kick it a shitload of times

even now my game is still ridiculously one sided, but I'm working on that

but the next major event in my life was moving to Sydney....... you would think the fact I moved somewhere where other people played footbag would improvbe my game a lot. No, not really.... I worked full time 5 days a week.....and the Sydney guys seemed to mainly kick during the week. Weekends I would be going to gigs and skating so I didn't have time for it. I just didn't care about it anymore.

I did have one big footbag experience though. Big Day Out 2003....there were TWO footbag stalls there. I met forra again at his stand...I was suprised he remembered me.... he was stoked I was still kicking and that I was into freestyle now...it was one of his bags that I had got back in 2001..that bag subsequently ran out of sand. I kicked a bit with Gareth (Kiser Tobias) a fair bit that day... we were both on about the same level so it was good to kick with someone.
Steve Ramsey from Hotsac had another stand going so I went to see him.... he had a big fenced off area with Lynton doing demos and stuff.....Lynton was like yeah come kick in here.... I was just like *OMG DIEs* and I think I hit pixie clipper or something and Lynton gave me props...I was just like WOW

but we shredded for a while and then I realised it was 12 and the mighty Frenzal Rhomb were on so I had to run off and see them. Having footbag things at music festivals is great but I usually miss half the event cos I'm too busy watching the bazillion bands I'm obsessed with.

Later in the day Forra gave me a shirt...it says warning... hackers @ work or something on the back.... later than this later on moment Forra sold me an Aurora for 10 bucks... this was a value price and I was stoked as I was quite a fan of my aurora before it died.

The sad part of this story is neither Hotpotato nor Hotsac exist anymore. Shed a tear for that

So anyway I have my new aurora and I'm stoked... I meet up occasionly with the Sydney guys, but nowhere near often enough..... on one of these meetings.... my Aurora must have fallen out of my pocket or something, because it was gone, lost in the abyss..as was my budding footbag career... hahaha well you wouldn't really call it a career but anyway

with nothing to kick with anymore, I completely started to lose interest. Skating and going to gigs (mainly option 2) completely took over my life...oh and there was that whole fulltime job thing

the next post will deal with how I got back into footbag

well I got bored again...it's probably like an hour since my last post, but anyway

lthoguh I was out of the scene completely I kind of kept tabs on the scene...just checking the ausfootbag forums and stuff.... the ECR's went buy and then the 04 nationals which I was kind of tempted to head to, but couldn't justify going all the way to Melbourne for footbag.... I went to Brisbane to see Korn and Fear Factory instead.

So anyway, another big move...I was off to Canberra for uni. Now Canberra is really not an exciting city, especially coming from Sydney. But months went by and I still didn't get back into kicking. I think I must've gone home at some stage and found an old assassin cos I started kicking again but only a little bit. I just didn't have the motivation to kick.
Anyway at some stage I was in Sydney (most likely to see a band) and I had a kick with Ian and probably Dyalan too. Ian sold me an Aurora and I started getting back into it a bit more.

When we skated I would bring out my bag and we would just circle kick at the end of a session...no one really got into freestyle.. they would try stalls and stuff... but it didn't take off.

I had emailed Matt Baker a few times as he also lived in Canberra.... eventually we actually nearly made time to meet for a kick, but I had to go away.....this going away was for a period of 3 months and by the time I came back he had moved to the Nethrlands......as you do....

Anyway in this 3 month break (which culminated in the aussie titles) I was very much into my kicking. I went over to Perth for a couple of weeks and kicked a whole lot, when I was in Sydney I would kick with Ian and Dyalan as much as possible..people would want to skate and I would be like nar I'm going to play footbag. One session it was me, Ian, Dyalan, Dylan Fry and James Hermey... that was really good session..apart from the fact I played like shit....I still didn't have lavers and I was wearing longish shorts so I must have seemed like such an amateur..but these things happen.

in this three month period there was also the next step in my footbag life... lavers and short shorts..... Ian had bought a pair of lavers...but they were too big, so he got another pair.... his old ones were now mine :)

I was gradually getting longer strings and was feeling like I wouldn't make too much of a dick out of myself at the aussies. Melbourne was fast approaching.....

I should post what I've been hitting lately

haven't really been trying too much new

been trying BOP a lot

did infiinty>BOP then went for a second round of BOP but dropped on the pdx mirage

umm lots of ducking and diving clippers etc

been trying pixie ducking.....so far I can pixie ducking..... toe stall.... I tried phoenix the other day but I fell on my arse. Oops.

Tomorrow I'm shredding with Ian and Dyalan in Sydney..should be good due to the fact that the CAnberra scene doesn't exist... prob the last time I get to shred with Ian before he heads overseas too which kinda sucks. The Sydney scene will be diminished too.

kicked a bit on my weekend in Sydney....don't think I really learnt anything new, but I was just trying to do new longer runs and stuff

I think the pick of runs I did was

dimwalk> pdx mirage> op butterfly> pdx mirage> parkwalk> .... this was usually the bit where I dropped it or went back to toe

was working on sidewalk....it's kinda getting there....it's a long way off though
did pixie ss symp mirage

and hit flip pixie legover a few times... flip pixie feels as if it's getting stronger

I'm ultra tired I think I'll go to bed

don't really have much news. Haven't hit anything particularly knew lately

hit two consec reverse swirls again... I gotta beat that stupid record, it'll come, it'll come....and now alex has challenged me to rev swirl> twirl. Tough stuff.

Haven't been concentraiting a lot on kicking lately, been skating and going out and getting drunk

managed to get myself kicked out of shooters (terribly seedy club in Canberra that does $2 drinks)

go me

thanks dude :)

I took my time about it, but I think I've definitely arrived

went down to Subway with my friend Ben last night...had a bit of a kick outside with my friend Nathan...he was just kicking it back to me, but that's a good start

Ben was about to come out and I hit this awesome run...I wasn't really paying any attention.... but it was somewhere between 20-30 tiltless and it including a fair bit of guiltless stuff.. diving clipper, ducking osis, pdx mirage, butterfly..... lots of people were looking too. It was fun.

Speaking of lots of people looking, I've been in contact with this lady and I'm doing a demo in May...I think it's gonna be fun. And I get paid money..cool cool

been practicing my flip osis lots.... and hit flip diving osis very nicely... I think to pdx mirage but I can't quite remember

did this thing for uni at the senior sports carnival today......at lunch I brought out my bag had a nice shred. Got a fairly big hack circle going it was good fun.

didn't really hit too much impressive although I was doing runs of about 8-10ish guiltless....fairly basic stuff....but you get that.

just got back from a two week journey to Sydney. Couldn't really be bothered making a long post (jsut did an assignment plus a massive lj post)

but anyway, I shredded a lot while I was up there. I bought a new bag. It's an elemental. Kinda interesting... a bead bad, bit bigger than what I'm used to..but it's a new challenge.
I have converted my friend Phil to the footbag world... he can toe stall on both sides and he's learning ATW and trying butterfly
I met another shredder. Jas. He is from Newcaste...I went to Newcastle the week before, but didn't have his number... in a fairly comical situation I was walking around Newy thinking, if only I had his number. But anyway, we kicked...I forgot my shorts, although I came close to Phoenix.
I hit Phoenix for the first time yesterday...only once. I think it's my first 5. There might be others. I was doing some nice long runs yesterday too which kept me pleased.
Cog are the best band ever.
Slain Of Myself can also be described as the best band ever

well neither are "the best" but they're both awesome, saw them both during my travels. See Cog again on Thursday
oh and I hit torque and double switchover

was waiting for the bus last night when we were going in to see Cog (they rule so much)

and was just kicking around my bag, did some nice long runs.... it was kinda funny, my friends were watching and they were paying out some of the moves....like terrage.. .they're just like.... it's like oo you're tricking the bag and catching it on the other foot....and diving clipper was like you're like... will it go over, or will it not dun dun dun..... and then I'm like I wanna hit phoenix...I was wearing my long shorts, so wasn't expecting much... third go BAM

cheers man

I'll have to hit another five add now

kicked a bit over the weekend, nothing particulary exciting to report on... been thinking about new 5's to try, I think the next will be pdx torque

doing a demo soon for some careers expo, I get paid..dunno how much though.

There's currently debate on where to have next years aussie champs
I think it's kinda becoming a personal battle between Jeremy and Dan, but oh well

I'd kinda like to go to Tasmania cos I've never been there and it'd mean I'd have to fly... Melb would mean I could fly, but probably end up taking the 10 hour bus...also in the Melbourne plan they intend on spending $2000 on getting Honza out. I don't see why he can't pay some of this..meh not my problem.
I'll be there wherever it is, and I'll be much better than last year. Coolness. Gareth has made a video, it got sent to my Grandma's..I'll have to pick that up next week.

so excited

I didn't even touch my bag today

that's not cool at all.

Ah well

well it looks like I may be organising another Canberra event, this one for September.. Jeremy was on to it, but since I live in Canberra, I see it making more sense that I do it. Just PM'd Scott about insurance and stuff, cos I'm not entirely sure about that

would be an awesome opportunity for footbag though, it's like a convention of different sports

at EPIC- so it's gonna be massive of course :P

and I'm doing a demo in 2 weeks from Saturday... Friday and Saturday, I gotta do 3 a day, but I only actually get up there for like a minute

and apparently I get paid

rawk

I'm gonna go to Melbs in my hols
and maybe Brissy as well

I'm keen to shred with like...other people

kicked a little today at uni...was trying to practice some long tiltless runs for this stupid demo.....I think it's stressing me more than it should...ah well, I'm looking forward to it, maybe I'll meet some interesting people

and I hit Phoenix today, so that takes the tally to 3 ever.... one day I'll hit them mid run....one day
