Bunions

Post by Wasabi » 15 Oct 2008 16:18

I have a mild case of bunions on my right foot, and a moderate one on my left. Just recently I've been feeling a lot of pain on my left big toe, especially where the bump is located. At first I thought it was my shoes that were causing them (I wear Quantums), and I always fit my shoes to a snug fit (not too tight and small, but enough so that my toes are touching the end of the shoe). However, I did some research and found that bunions are hereditary, and are not caused by the shoes you wear and whatever. I think prolonged intense physical activity of the feet can worsen bunions as well.

Anyway, I just want to hear other people's thoughts about this case, and what I or anyone should do about it. Has anyone gone through surgery to relieve their bunions?

Also, I have seen a foot specialist, and she has told me about my bunions and whatever. It's just now I'm feeling pretty intense pain on my left foot, and would like some advice from footbaggers that have gone through a similar experience.

I have bunions on both of my feet too, but mine are painless. I've been to a foot specialist several times (twice a year for four years), and received a pair of orthotics that help keep them from getting worse. I think the only reason they've held off on the surgery is because I'm only fifteen and still growing. If yours cause a lot of pain, you should talk to your doctor about getting the surgery done. They will only get worse if they aren't fixed. My doctor gave me a list of shoe brands that are recommended for people with bunions.. PM me if you want me to type it up for you.

there is still alot of debate about valgus halux. some say heredity, some say environment and shoe fitting, most say a combination of both. get some toe spacers if you haven't already. these are gelatin inserts that go between your big toe and 2nd toe. they help with reducing the valgus force on the big toe which comes from wearing tight fitting shoes. you'd probably have to take them out when you kick though. i imagine they would be fairly uncomfortable. I'd also suggest finding shoes that are properly fitted to your feet and have a wide enough to box so that they won't aggravate the problem. Talk with your gp and your specialist, bring in your regular every day walking shoes and have them inspect them. Perhaps there are orthotics that could help with your situation that won't require you to change your normal shoes.

Thanks, I think I'll look into the gelatin toe spacers. :)

For a while I felt that the worn-out Quantums I use for casual wear were giving me a really tight fit (width-wise), even though my feet fit into them perfectly. It's probably due to the Brocka cut that were modded into the shoe, and the additional tightness of the laces to supplement for the lack of ankle support, that constricted my feet even more. Right now I'm wearing a pair of youth size 5.5 G-units as my casual kicks, and I've loosened the laces a bit so that I can give my feet some breathing room. So far everything is going well, and I don't feel much pain these days. However, my feet could use shoes with more room around the toe area, so I'm thinking of investing a pair of Nastase Milleniums (since I've heard they're one of the most comfortable shoes out there to wear). I might mod a pair for freestyle if I feel up for it.
