Hip STILL messed up -- please help! (can't play footbag!!!)

Post by Muffinman » 17 May 2005 00:21

So I've been injured for almost exactly a year.
To recap it was a progressive hip flexor strain (as far as I know) that occured over a long time. My hip (left side) was tender and hurt from flip PS whirls and flip atomic (both with left leg) half a year before I actually stopped playing. In my final session, before I really stopped playing, I pushed myself to hit fusion both sides and tapping dlo both sides (I never actually hit flip tapping dlo, and my good tapping dlo is simple). I pushed REALLY hard and knew after the session that that would probably be my last session for a while well I healed up; I still haven't.

I stopped playing completely in May 2004 (I remember a session with Andrew, Derek, and myself at the forks where we all had a consecutive moves competition and we only did moves that I could do without hurting myself...) Over time the injury started to get worse (I still don't really understand what is wrong) and it hurt to walk. I went to a walk-in clinic and at the time thought it was a pulled groin. I don't remember what the doctor said, but he gave me a note for work and I took 2 months off. I went back to work and I was able to walk, but jogging and running and jumping still weren't really possible without pain (still aren't really...).

I think I went to another walk-in some time later and then a sports-injury clinic (Pan Am Sports Clinic) -- I forget what the doctor at Pan Am said, too, because it obviously didn't help.

After more time I decided to go for athletic therapy. I saw this guy for a couple months (he worked with a "chiropractic team" if that makes any difference -- once he said that my back pain was due to my pelvis being out of alignment, another doctor later said that was crap...) -- he seemed REALLY unsure about everything but thought it was my hip flexor and not my groin. He gave me a handful of stretches and weight-exercises to do to rehabilitate. He also gave me ultra-sound at least 3 times for, like, 10 minutes and deep muscle massage, and he also helped me with some resistance stretches, which hurt a lot, but I think may have actually helped loosen scar tissue and stuff. (Keep in mind I don't know anything...)

After a million appointments he kept changing the nature of my stretches, since they didn't seem to be doing anything (I did my stretches and weight exercises religiously for months! Ask my girlfriend!) eventually he said that I should be healing up and that I should should finish up with some over-the-phone appointments just to check in and make sure everything is okay. That basically faded into me never seeing him again and nothing resolving itself (probably a good thing -- he seemed very unsure of himself near the end). In the last appointment over the phone he told me that if I just kept doing my exercises everything should work out. I did, but stopped after another couple months as absolutely nothing was happening and the exercises were eating up my life.

About two months ago I went back to the Pan Am clinic (oh yeah -- my athletic therapist suggested I go there for those special muscle x-rays). I don't remember if it was the same doctor as before, or not, but I don't think it was. This doctor was amazing and seemed COMPLETELY 100% confident in everything he said. He prodded around, told me it was definately my hip flexor, gave me a perscription for an anti-inflammitory, told me to keep up my stretches and exercises, and ice and to buy a pair of tight bike shorts to put pressure on the muscle and aid comfort. He then shooed me off for the x-rays and confirmed that it was my hip flexor and that there was no serious damage and that what he perscribed was indeed all that was needed for healing. He told me that if in one week I felt no change to make another appointment. I never did as school got busy -- I didn't feel any change from anything he perscribed, though I didn't do much of the exercises and stretches as I was DEAD SICK of the effort I put into it and the NOTHING I got back for months on end. I suppose I should make another appointment -- I will put that on my list of things to do right now.

Finally I have been going for acupuncture for about a week now. My third appointment is tomorrow. My latest doctor says that there is nothing serious and that she plans to completely heal me within 5 appointments. I feel no change at this point. She has also given me a Chinese "patch" called "Hua Tuo: anti-contusion rheumatism plaster" for bruise and sprain, rheumatism pains, lumbago backache and athritis pains. I do not have coverage for this doctor, but I would with another acupuncturist in the city. My appointments are costing $35 per session, which is a lot for me, but $15 cheaper, because I am sort of a friend of her daughter's. The other doctor charges $60, I think, but I have 80% coverage, which means it would be, what? About $8 per appointment? So I am considering this as a backup after these 5 appointments, as I certainly can't pay much more -- I will not have money for school this fall and I am going to need a loan (I am 100% completetly against loans -- ask Marita -- but what can I do??)

That's the scoop.
I know there are people here who know exactly what they're talking about (I'm looking at you John Mahood and Lon Smith) and could probably help me out even a little. If anyone could do anything for me I would be infinately grateful. I miss footbag :(

PS: Oh yeah -- the reason I didn't go back to Pan Am after the week was because the doctor went on vacation for a month....

EDIT: Oh yeah, throw in my family doctor between the Pan Am clinic and acupuncture -- he basically reiterated what the Pan Am doctor said, including the bike shorts -- he was more specific and told me to get something with an adjustable strap thingy to put the desired amount of pressure on my hip -- I think I got the wrong thing and it's just tight bike shorts from a sport-injury-supplies place. I wear them every day, but I don't really feel that they do anything.

Dude that totally sucks. You're one of my favorite guys on the forum and I'd love to be hearing new sick stuff you were hitting and whatnot. I read all of the words in that post and I definitely feel your pain. I had to take a year off after I tore my ACL in my left knee. I went through the physical therapy (a year's worth) and did all my exercises and everything just like they told me, but I never completely got my flexibility back and my left leg is pretty much crippled, but it seems like it's getting better by my playing footbag, so who knows.

The deep muscle massages definitely helped me out, as did the physical therapy and the mindset that I was going to get better (although my doctors totally knew how to help me and I was determined to get better the whole year because I wanted to prove to myself that I could get through all of the pain of PT and surgery and everything, and I did). My mother has gone through acupuncture and she said it really helped her out. That was for her back though. I've had a few friends try acupuncture and all of them have told me positive results. I would suggest staying with that. I don't know how to tell you to not give up on your exercises because I can't really imagine how you feel if you've been kind of led on like a blind sheep for the past year or so by all of these people, but seriously, I don't see how they would hurt you by any means and I would bet that they would help... perhaps they have helped already.

You said something about scar tissue... did the doctors tell you that you had a lot of scar tissue to break down? Because I know that breaking down scar tissue is a bitch (or it was for me) and it definitely took a lot of time, stretches and deep muscle massages and such. I'm not sure about your injury whatsoever because I haven't ever heard of that, but have you tried looking online for help? I don't know what you would find but it might be worth a shot.

I don't know what else to say other than I hope you get to feeling better SOON as being out for a year definitely sucks and I wouldn't want to see it happening to anyone on modified, but especially not you since you've been on the forums with me for the longest time (semi-consistently, anyways - we've both taken breaks for various reasons). But nevertheless man, keep your head up and hopefully it'll work out for you soon. I wish I could be more helpful but I really don't know anything about your injury. Good luck though!

Eh Sorry for the PM asking you all of these questions than you already wrote a whole thing on... hehe I don't browse around the forum much these days. I find it very stange that the medical community doesn't know how to fix your problem. There has to be a logical reason why your hip flexor is not healing. Maybe you should go to a different sports doctor and let them know that even with time off and following other medical advice, that you have not been healed. Maybe they need to look harder at what is causing your lack of healing? I wish I knew more about this kind of thing.

BUMP

I hurt my hip flexor this morning before physics

Both my physics instructor and a school nurse have confirmed it

My physics instructor has sustained hip damage himself and has been unable to rid himself of it

How are you doing??????

What can I do????

(this is jake's brother, i'm having trouble w/ registration)

has anyone suggested getting a shot of steroids into the area u damaged? if it is scar tissue locking up your hip it could really help - my father had a problem w/ a locked up shoulder and it helped him a ton. I believe the steroid shot helped to break through the scar tissue with stretching and light muscle exercises :) but i don't know all the exact biological details

It's probably something to look into or ask a therapist about at the very least

Hm...from what I was reading from your pain in your explanatory paragraphs and my limited experience as a field medic, I could tell that it was something to do with your hip flexor. I'm not an expert and I can't really have a chat with you in-person to see where exactly it hurts and how you move your hip, but I'll tell you to do these stretches for a bit and tell me if they work (they worked for me when I screwed my hip up minorly at MFJ 2, but everyone's body works differently and, like I said, I'm not an expert, I just have some medical experience).

Place your hands on your hips like you're impatient for someone to show up.
Stand straight up with your legs shoulder width apart.
Rotate your hips in a circle (kinda like the "I'm humping so-and-so" gesture) about five-ten times clockwise, five-ten times counterclockwise.

Try the butterfly (groin) stretch. Be sure to push down with your arms and hold the stretch for about ten repetitions of one-two-three (kinda like they do for PT in those army movies you kids see)

Grab your leg, place your ankle on your thigh with the inside of your foot pointing up and slowly put pressure on the inside of your leg (like the groin stretch) and go to the point of stretch pain; if your injured hip feels pain before your un-injured one, don't push it too far, just inch it further each time you stretch.

I hope these help, Erik. If I had some sort of camera, I'd demonstrate them and show you because the way I explain stretches probably sucks.

EDIT: It's my 420th post! Time to go smoke a phatty.

I noticed that the original post of this topic was from May. Erik, can you play now? If so, what helped heal you?

Watch 'muffinman,' Peter. It looks like he isn't injured anymore and if he didn't tell me he was still injured a bit, I wouldn't've noticed at all.

Erik, try some hot springing experiences sometime. The minerals in the water might help restore some of the cartilidge/joint/bone or whatnot in the hip flexor. I went to the hot springs when I screwed my toe up in January and it felt SOOOO good.

Hey guys -- sorry, I stopped looking at the forum and didn't notice these posts last month. I gave up checking after nobody replied in the first place :?

To answer your question, Peter, if anything my injury is worse. I have been in pain, and unable to play to my potential (I can't do 90% of what I could) for a year and a half (May, 2004). I've noticed that it doesn't hurt to play (much) if I just do bails and easy stuff, like in the videos I have been posting -- so I have been as often as I feel good about it.

I don't remember if I mentioned in this original post, but during my time off I somehow managed to mess up my knees, too (which were worse than the hip at one point!), which prevents me from doing two of the three stretches that Sam suggested (the hip-rotations sound good, and I will try them in my stretching routine tomorrow!!). My knee injury (both knees, but mostly the opposite knee from my injured hip) really makes it hard to rehabilitate the hip, because I can't do the best stretches -- I feel so useless.

I had my specialist appointment, finally, the week before last. It was with an orthopedic surgeon. He basically said that it's not my bone, like I thought it may have been after getting no answers from anybody. I have an MRA appointment in another uncountable number of months, and aside from that he has no suggestions for my knees (he said he doesn't do surgery (free in Canada) on minor injuries, and that it may not help even if he did), and has no idea what is wrong with my hip. That makes, like, 8 doctors that have done nothing for me.

Any help would be great -- thank you so much for the replies, and I can't wait to see how the hip-rotations feel.

PS: Running and jumping (jumping-jacks, or whatever) hurts my knees after about 10 seconds.

I'm kinda shooting in the dark here, but below I listed off a few "possible candidates" with some symptoms that I gathered from your posts. By all means, check out the website as it is an excellent source of information (my number one check-in when I am injured).

Stress fracture in the neck of the femur.

- Pain in hip whilst and after running
- Pain in hip joint during movement

Slippage of the epiphysis at the neck of the femur.

- Hip pain and groin pain which can also radiate into the knee.

Inflammation and calcification of the greater trochanter.

- Pain on the upper part of the femur (thigh bone).
- Pain when you press your leg outwards against resistance.
- Pain when you push in on the greater trochanter.

They also have an extensive list of knee injuries which you should definitely check out. My source is The Sports Injury Clinic.

Erik, personally, I wouldn't play at all. Even doing things like clippers can take a toll on a tightened groin or hip flexor. You should probably take at least a full year off of play (completely off!! thinking that you're better partway into a rehabilitation plan and starting to play again = failure!) and during that time ice your injuries and look into a plan of stretching and light exercise to begin to balance your body back to normal. Yoga works wonders. Sites like yogajournal.com have great articles that can be very useful. Initially, though, just take some time off, man! It's such a shame that you keep driving yourself into the group by continued playing. :(

Yeah, I have no idea what to say about your injury (what it is, what to do), but I agree with Sam that continuing to play lightly doesn't sound too helpful. I'd hate to tell you to quit playing until you are healed, but that probably seems best, and you probably know it deep down. I can relate to you in some way not so serious, because I am 8 and a half months pregnant and missing footbag like crazy, but I won't touch a bag just to be safe (with me and the baby). And as much as I want to get back to it asap, I am not expecting to get back into it for atleast a couple months after the baby is born. And I also remember that my shin splints I got a little less than a year ago never got completely better until I quit playing altogether for like 2 months. I am pretty sure you and everyone else who's been playing for atleast a year have gone through that.

Thanks for the response.
The difference for you, Chrissy, is that you know you will be able to play again. I have no idea whether I will ever play again -- especially since I'm getting old :'( I had really bad shin splints years ago -- like I couldn't play at all on them (my legs literally collapsed). I found they went away when I bought Spenco insoles, and I've never had them since.

I did take time off completely. I took off a few months -- twice. I guess that isn't enough, and I do realize that it's probably best to not play at all, but from the feedback from doctors who have no idea what it is, and the most recent doctor saying that it will probably never heal, I figured why would I give it up altogether if I won't get better. I don't know if I will or not, but it's a good point, and I will try to stop altogether again over the winter, after Chicago.

Thanks for the link, Byrin -- none of those injuries really correspond with my symptoms, though >____<

Erik, I was both saddened and alarmed when I read you post. My groin has been giving me some trouble, and I'm on my third week off..hoping to start playing this weekend. But after reading your post I got kind of scared. I hope hope hope hope hope hope hope it's nothing serious.

I've been hating myself everyday for not being able to play for these past few weeks..so I can't fathom these longer breaks you've already taken. When someone has a passion that they can't indulge in, their soul can't be at rest. You must be tearing yourself apart inside, and for that I'm truly sorry.

As for advice, I can't really offer any more insight than all the professionals you've gone to. All I can do is wish you a solid recovery sooner than later.

That's why I said I could relate to you, but not as seriously.

I see your idea that you might as well play since nothing seems to be working out, but I still think you should give it a good shot. Have some patience, and hopefully after a good break, you will get better. I don't know if I have any credibility (?) to say this, but you could end up putting yourself in more harm like being in a wheelchair or something and not really be able to do anything if you keep playing and don't let yourself rest.

Erik this sounds serious. I can only suggest that you immediatly stop playing or doing anything that puts strain or causes any kind of pain on your hip and continue to see different doctors until the problem is fixed. Every time you play while causing yourself pain you increase the chances of doing yourself permenant damage. In fact it's possible that that's what you've done already and that it won't be possible to fix your hip but take the time off to really check it out. This is also a message to everybody else. When ever you have an injury of any nature - unless you're really confident you know what the injury is, you should stop playing footbag and all other physical activity until you have seen a doctor and had the problem seriously fixed. Otherwise you risk ending your footbag career or doing serious permenant damage - and this is a genuine risk - in fact it's pretty likely with a lot of injuries.

Hey Erik. You might want to check out http://www.cyclingnews.com/fitness/ and send an email to the people there about your problem.

Also not all cycling shorts are equal. Some are made with fabrics that compress muscle.

Other links - http://www.cyclingnews.com/fitness/?id=care_freddy Art of muscle care.

I don't footbag anymore but I've taken up cycling. Hope this helps.

-hi erik,

I have nothing particularly productive to add. But I can SO resonate with where you are and I just had to write and and say I feel your pain.

I guess the one insight I have is that there is a big difference in finding a doctor and finding THE doctor. It sounds like you need THE doctor, and this may take resources in both time and money. Not all help is equal, and in fact most doctors are mediocre. Those that really know their shit aren't exactly knocking down the doors of footbag players, if you dig my meaning.

Good luck!
