Art Major

Post by Drew » 15 Feb 2007 09:24

So I've lately been really interested in Art. I'm a freshman in college, undeclared, exploring what I might want to study. I've been considering lately looking into teaching art, or art history, or something of the sort.

What I'm asking is, does anyone have an art degree of some sort? I plan on going to my advisor soon and discussing it with them, but I'm just wondering how difficult the field is, finding a job, difficulty of classes, etc.

Any help on the topic is immensely appreciated.

any art class where you arent phisically making some sort of art sucks. everyone hates, and loathes art history. yeah, you learn great artists, trends of artists, and timelines. but you could do that with anything, and its just boring.

making art a career choice is a toughy. do you really love making art so much, you want to make a living from it? with training, do you think youd have the will to force yourself to make art everyday, so you can eat dinner that night?

for me, the best choice was going to computer art, and by that i mean graphic design. its one of the leading and best paying art jobs.

everywhere you look you see it. see an ad? a designer made it. what about that mag cover? designer. bilboard? tshirt? website? all graphic design. even they typeface you see on this page was made by some typographer.

so theres many fields in graphic design to work in. ive heard to expect around 28-30000 dollars a year if you get in somewhere to work, a year or so out of college. after that, your money only grows.

just like anything tho, it takes alot of work to get good. and going to the wrong school wont help.

im not saying dont try to be an art teacher, but if you expect to teach art out of college, expect an elementary school art job. or maybe middleschool. teaching art takes alot more expierence than what youll learn in school. because you have to know so many techniques, to so many forms of art.

i would consult your advisor. see what they say their school can teach you, and where you can go with that.

if all else fails, go to an art school after you finish a couple literal arts classes (historys, english comps, and world historys), because you still hav to take those in most art schools if they offer a degree or something like it.
