I was hoping some of you tech-savvy kickers would be able to help me out with a little conundrum I have:
I got 2 computers, 1 desktop and 1 laptop. The laptop is old and kinda falling apart, so like the loving son I am I lent it to my father. I had been having some weird problems with it, but nothing major. He calls me up a couple weeks later, and apparently the whole thing wont accept any input and he can't log in.
He gets this buddy of his to check it out, and apparently there's a big virus "sub-system" running on the computer. If you open task manager, there are duplicates of all the processes running, like a layer on top of the actualy OS.
I have no experience in anything like that, but I won't format the laptop a) because I can't, but more impotantly b) I have litterally a thousand project files of all my music, samples, original vocal stems, etc., basically eveything I've done for years on that computer.
Obviously, I want to save that data! What should I do to transfer those files on my desktop? Or what can I do to get rid of the virus? I was thinking of hooking up the HD to one of those external USB boxes, but from there I want to be careful not to transfer the virus or whatever it is on to the desktop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Virus trouble
I had a similar virus on my old computer. After doing everything i could think of, had some more tech savvy friends check it out and searching the internet for hours looking for a possible fix i finally gave up. I then gave it to a guy who does stuff like this for a living along with an external hard drive and he got all my data off, formatted the computer and got it back to me a few days later.
So to avoid a headache and possible data loss I would just drop a few bucks and find a professional who can do it with ease.

Yeah I just reformat when things get poopy.
It helps to make a separate partition on one of your internals specifically for OS functions and installation, so that when you have to reformat again next you don't lose anything in the other partitions.
I love reformatting because it gets rid of things that you would otherwise be too lazy to get rid of.

I'd recommend finding someone cheap nearby you can trust like others suggested. Your data is usually accessible assuming the hard drive isn't completely corrupted or dead.
you might want to invest in a large external hard drive as well just to be sure your data won't be lost on a different hard drive
