Who pays for all this? What if it was us?

Post by mc » 03 Mar 2010 22:28

Hi,

I emailed the modevia help desk the other day to express interest in beginning fundraising to pay for modified.

I got this in response.
The people currently paying for modified wrote: Matt,

Thanks for your consideration. Your recollection of events is exactly right.

I can tell you that in 2009, you guys averaged just over 6 GB of bandwidth utilization per month. If you walked up to me on the street and asked what account type that falls under, I'd tell you Level Three ($30/mo).

I'm not asking you to start paying $30/mo, and conversely we have no intentions of discontinuing the current arrangement. If you as a community feel compelled to pay some nominal amount towards the cost of bandwidth, great; and if not, at least now you know what your utilization is.

Thanks again Matt. Let me know if you have any questions.
I would be willing to donate a the sale of a footbag to pay for the use of modified for the next month. Cameron has offered a much more generous payment to these people in the past.

Is anyone else interested in paying for this? It's so cheap. If no one wants to pay for month two, I'll pay for that as well with another bag sale. Every month it could just come down to asking 6 modified users to be the sponsors of the month and donate 5 dollars each.

if there was a collective pot for modified, id chuck a few quid/dollars/euros in now and then.

Ive seen it before on a few other forums where memebers can make donations (and the donations are tracked to show how much has been put in... "We've raised XX out of the XX we need this month" kinda thing)

Perhaps a stickied thread, with a paypal donate now button?

It sounds noble, but if it comes to it, wouldn't it make more sense to just move the forums to .org and donate money to footbag?..

I am all for moving modified to another location, .org even, but here are my concerns:

Footbag.org is a non-profit website hence the DOT ORG. The site uses real names for forum members and has (not sure if it still does) censored content in the past in the form of completely re-written text.

Modified.in is not a NON profit site and uses alias names with real name in signature (for those that abide). Content is moderated for broken rules, but rarely if ever re-written and posted. Most often the offensive material is deleted and/or posts are moved to more appropriate sections.

Crossing these 2 together creates a somewhat worrisome occurrence. For 1 the content on modified is "blue", meaning that some content if moved to .ORG would not fit with their squeaky clean imagine and would either have to be rewritten or deleted during migration. I believe that simply moving it would break the privacy policy agreement of this site, but I am more concerned about censorship.

Secondly, all the 4 sale stuff would need to be removed as well, sense footbag.org is non-profit, they cannot directly purport to sell anything. Which is why the footbag store on .org is hosted on a .com site.

Lastly, footbag.org is an all or nothing site, which means, that the content on that site is for the betterment of all things related to Footbag, which includes net. The forum is actually geared more towards net despite the popularity of freestyle.

I see .org as the instructor of footbag while modified is a close knit group of participants that shred off to the side. We are one of many sub forums that grow their own culture of footbag. I feel that this would diminish if all the sub forums disappeared in favor of .org.

This is not to say that a new culture couldn't emerge out of .org. I just think it is highly unlikely.

Thoughts?
Go out and shred already.

I would pitch in to keep this forum running...

Alternatively, I have 300000 MB of usable monthly bandwidth on ShredGlobal.com...

That is 300 Gbs right ?

and would be fine letting someone knowledgable move the forum and assign all the necessary moderator privaledges as is here to there

If people make new banners they can be added to the rotation. That should happen in this thread.

It seems like people are willing to donate a flat rate or percentage of sales. Matt, do you want to organize a way to collect the money? If that gets figured out I can hook you up with our contact at Modevia.

I can provide free hosting for Modified for life.

I'd just give you a file system and a database and not want to change anything at all.

If you guys are interested, just say the word.

Not that I am in any way in a hurry to do this, but, for the record, I've not heard anything on this yet.
