How did you 'Discover' footbag?

Post by Oroza » 12 Dec 2006 11:07

I hacked in HS, never heard the term 'footbag' till I met a guiltless Tom Kotsakos @ UIC, got a lil tiltless then stopped after i left UIC for 2 years, and just got back into in this summer. sets, whirls and torque, blur where the first things to really wow me. i played a little soccer and bball back in the day/bolivia. i dont like spectator sports usually, (baseball, football...)

Idk, I was just reading Jordens thoughts on spreading the sport, it helps to know how and why other get diggin
Plain, with everything.

I saw a hippy in birkenstocks doing DATW and osis. I was blown away. I've been addicted to freestyle for 8 years now.

Great topic.

I got my first bag when I was 9 or 10, that was back in 1990 or 91. I was an active "hacker" all through high school and college. One day when I was 23 I was bored at work I searched for "hackysack" on google and found footbag.org. In 13 years of "hacking" I had never once seen REAL freestyle. I didn't actually see other people do it IRL until I met up with other shredders through footbag.org and modified. I really wish I would have known way back then, but no one had presented it to me, and I did not stumble across it on my own. So I think promotion of the sport is important, because 99.999% of the population simply doesn't know this stuff exists!!!!

In highschool, every lunch we ate, and then sat saying "What are we gonna do..? " for the next hour...One of my Soccer playing friends played hacky sack a few times in Tech class, and then brought his own to school. So we kicked a bit.

Within a week or two, I forgot who, either me or him, searched and found a canadian footbag site, with random tricks like a calf stall and a pendulum. Either one of us shared the site, and were wowed. Then further on the site, one of us found Net Footbag, again, wowed..

Few days later one of us found Flipsider (the old one) and were amazed beyond belief.

I remember the first Vasek video I saw was the Rocketboom thing, and thought to myself "He's ok, but all he does it ripwalks..."
Oh what I had to learn...

I hacked for about 8 years or so before I saw a short clip on MTV Sports: Hardcore. I obviously didn't recognize them then, but I think they featured Eric Wulff, Tuan Vu and Peter Irish. There was a short segment where they showed freestlye moves and had the combo of clipper > op clipper but had named it Symposium Blur. I first hit 'Symposium Blur' in 1998

Hack circle > google > .ORG, circa June 2001.

I sent an email to Eric Wulff (the performer of the coolest demo on the ORG move list (scorpion's tail)) asking a little about bags and shoes, and got a very friendly and informative reply.

I first played when I saw a short fat (I mean FAT) kid smashing everyone in numbers. I couldnt let that be so I set out to be th e best at hack. In the course of a couple months I honed my hack skills to a level where i honestly believed I was the best hacker in all the land. Then I met Luis Monhollon.
Im still on that mission.

hacky sack with my older brothers since i was like 8. since im the youngest i have a napoleon complex and have to be the best, so i played by myself to be the best in every circle i kicked in. found footbag.com summer of 04, tried a few of those tricks for about two days, found flipsiderdotcom, landed my first clipper towards the end of the summer, played essentially everyday for about 4-5 months, been playing like at least 5 times a week since, except for a couple injury recuperations. i was 17 when i started, im 19 now, can hit 30+ guiltless. im hoping to be really good by the time im like 21-22. another good question would be how many total circles you think you've played in, because i know i've personally played in...maybe over a thousand. you know how it is...anytime anyone plays any kind of hack, you're there, since you first started getting obsessed with hacky sack, am i right?

kicking a bag around since middle school. then one day i started kicking a lot because i like the feeling of keeping it going. it gave me something to focus on, and then one day when i was kicking my friend started busting out these 4 add tricks and i was mind blown.

I think I saw the same segment. Seeing ATW blew my mind and I had to learn how to do it.

circle kicked casually in highschool then last summer I was a bottle of wine deep with friends hanging out on the lawn next to the eiffel tower, and saw a couple of french tiltless players. From a distance it looked like hack so we ran over, and our minds completely blown.

Then they invited us to come to a session the next day, where we got to see Serge, Vasek, Frank Remy, Charles Dupuy and others tear it up. After seeing Vasek hit ripstein I had chills, and I've been obsessed since.

Back in the 3rd grade playing hacky sack was in, it was the thing all the kids on the playground where doing. So of course I had to get one. I got my sipa sipa and them used to play numbers.

kept kicking up too highschool, there was a kid at my school named Jon. He was the first one who exposed me to footbag. He was hitting things like ripwalk and datw. He showed my freinds and I some basics like legover and mirage. I found footbag.org, then I found modified.

I used to play hacky-sack whit some guys in my college. And one night , in a club (far away from the place i lived ), i saw sick03 , of course i didn't know that was sick03 but that was the first time i saw footbag and clipper stuff !! ( Actually it was fred touzelet , one of the directors of sick03, who gave a copy to the dj a few weeks ago .)

Then i discovered real footbag on internet , started to doing clipper butterfly legover, mirage ... and all this "beginner stuff" (but only one side :? ) ... at this time we were just a couple of guy to play in my college .Then i had to stop to play when i had to move to an other city , to study medecine in a faculty .
After few month , i wanted to play again , so i went on the french footbag forum and some guys said to me there was only one player in my city , and this player was fred touzelet !!!!! Amazing ,isn't it ?
And since that time we play together . He teachs me every time we play( he plays footbag for 6 or 7 years now ,and he knows almost everything about footbag) and he shares his experience and his tips with me . It's great!

I hope you understand what i wrote because my english is pretty bad :D

I was at some random concert in my tiny town. And we were hacking and some guy who was about 25 came and hit mobius. Left the circle.

henry, no idea who that was? I'm sure if you posted the name of the concert and the city and date, you could find out... not that many people can jump into a hacky circle and bust mobius.
