Workshops at Worlds

Post by Jorden » 19 Jul 2007 22:35

Ahoy,

I've been thinking -- with all the best players from North America and the rest if the World under one roof this August, shouldn't there be some lessons or seminars??? It would be a shame if the pros kept to themselves the entire week. Why not give something back to the community?

Let's hold some workshops!!

I don't mind organizing this. First off, here are the workshops I would like to hold during the week:

1. Freestyle Basics
2. Basic Creativity
3. Advanced Creativity
4. How to Invent Footbag Tricks
5. Shred 30 Planning/Strategy (Intermediate)

My question to you guys is:

Do you (or anyone you know) want to run a workshop at Worlds? It can be on any aspect of the game. Running extra Freestyle Basics workshops is encouraged so players get a taste of different viewpoints and styles.
Please PM me your proposed workshop. :)

I will look into getting this an IFPA sanctioned activity. However, if it's just me teaching the workshops Edit: no fee, which gives access to all the workshops. Each one would be fully planned and rehearsed, with plenty of one-on-one time.

Is this something you would be interested in partaking in? I would like to get an idea of the demand for this sort of thing. Which workshop listed above interests you the most? Also, any suggestions for other workshops?

Tentative List
------------------

Jorden Moir --Basics (1), Advanced Freestyle (4)
Andrew Grant -- Stretching (1)
Jim Penske -- Basics (1), Advanced Freestyle (2)
Brian Dennis -- Stitching (1)
Tom Mosher -- Stitching (1)
Ken Somolinos -- Shred 30 (1)

Andrew Grant was telling me a while ago that he thought that he should teach people how to properly stretch at Worlds, since he's noticed so many people do it wrong, and he studies athletic therapy.

Wow, this is such a great idea. I would probably participate in most seminar but the one I'm the most interested in are the 3 firsts, even thought I would like to attend them all 8O. Thanks!

I would teach some workshops. I could do a "basics" and maybe a "going fearless" one. Or maybe one all about whirls or something.

Workshops is a great idea, and has worked well at tournaments we've run in Japan.

I personally feel that charging for workshops goes against the spirit of footbag. If any money is to change hands, it should come from the tournament directors.

I would be happy to teach a workshop on how to plan and execute a Shred30.

i could probably donate my time for helping some folks learn to stitch 4 panels and 32panels... but that should be one on one, so if im sitting down, just ask to learn.

i would be interested in a few of those jorden, id show up for at least one for sho!

OK, awesome!

I'm down with no fee. It was only if no one else was willing to teach. :P

Please PM me if you're down with running a workshop. Let me know:

- what you want to teach (i.e. Workshop Title)
- how long (approx.)
- what part of the week you'd like to hold it (start, middle, or end)

I will send Scott Davidson an e-mail to see if he wants to help organize this.

I would like to help out on the stitching workshop. I would like to help Erik and anyone interested with my approaches to making a clean and well performing footbag.

Tom's workshops are also super cool. I highly recommend them.

Scott D had this idea awhile back, the problem is footbaggers are cheap. I dunno about $$$ but you can stop by our shred house for a meal or 2 if we can go to your meeting. They also did clinics for free in 2000 vancouver, I remember Sunil taught a barrage set clinic as well as some others.

I would love to attend as many workshops as I can. Especially shred 30 and umm, freestyle basics. I mean, I think I know all there is to know about freestyle basics, but I would certainly benefit from having a pro critique my form in person.

On a related note, I thought that the more atheletically inclined of us might like to go on a group run, between 1.5 to 3 miles or so for some cardio based string lengthening. Jorden? Aaron? Bueller?

Bummmp!

Ok, I've heard back from Scott.

A couple things:

- You don't need to take the Instructors course before running a workshop. However, it is still recommended. :)
- If we can get dates and times during planned casual shred sessions that any of you would like to teach your workshop, Scott can accommodate it into the schedule!!

Looks like I'm gonna be the head organizer for this, which is cool.
Anyone else want to teach something? Some ideas that come to mind:

Byrin -- Advanced Freestyle?
Honza -- Advanced Freestyle?
Regamey -- Advanced Toe Moves?
Goldberg -- 4-Square?
Petey -- Hands and Feet Juggling?
Genz -- Foot Juggling?
Mosher -- Shoe Mods?
Vaska -- Everything??

Lemme know peeps. Throw me a PM with your workshop name, preferred date and time of day!

if someone wants to do a shoe mod shop... id be down to help. i guess we would need some unmodded shoes though. anyone want to volunteer their shoes to be modded in a workshop? youd get them back at the end. anyway, this is starting to sound like a lot of fun, jorden! great idea!

I hope you guys can also film the workshops because I'm sure a lot of people not going to Worlds will also be interested in watching them. I think a stretching tutorial/workshop is would be really helpful as well.
Practice makes perfect - it's as simple as that

How personal are these workshops going to be? ie, what would the ratio of teacher to student be?

I guess right before casual shred would be a perfect time for a stretching workshop and or an ankle flexibility workshop.

Count me in on giving them.
