a couple things:
someone said playing solo sucks. I really like it actually.

Being one of the older players playing at a decent level, I wonder about the other guys my age that I used to shred with. Where'd they go? Like, Sunil, Tu, Ahren, Neil Payne, Kaiser, Dan Kramer etc. Oh, and Noah D. The list is longer than that.

I wonder if too much skill makes it boring eventually for some (Sunil, Ahren, Noah etc.). Maybe it's a blessing to have to try to hard (like I have to) to get anything new in your game. Maybe that makes it harder to quit because there's always so many players better to challenge you.

I just started playing again myself. I quit for about 6 months? maybe 9? anyway I just started playing again yesterday, my skills didnt get any worse, its harder to land stuff but i can still pull the same tricks.

It was good to get a break from footbag but i have to admit i got out of shape. I got really lazy without all the practicing, and my energy went way down. I say if your gonna quit do something else. I just started up basketball and footbag again to get back into shape.

I've thought about quitting several times recently. It's not as fun for me as it once was.

Im pretty old for a freestyler-35. I havent ever quit but Im one of the few from my generation who loved playing enough that I kept playing.
I sucked bad for years but I still think up new moves to keep my interest. Today I learned frigid refraction, tomorrow I think Ill go for a fairy ducking frigid refraction and I may have hit a move nobody else has?

I've been trying to quit footbag for 2 years now but I'm mentally addicted to it. I just can't cope with the fact that it is something that will be inside of me forever. The idea of freestyle and self-expression is something that encompasses my core personal beliefs and drives my interest and respect for things that I do in my life or the things I cannot do.

Do you guys realize how many of the people who posted in this thread 4 years ago have quit, but said they never would. Pretty funny. Quitting I feel might be forced on me, due to injury, it really sucks, I want to play forever. I think i still have a few good years in me but who knows.

i tried to quit myself at the end of last summer. shin splints were just killing me. after i managed to hide my bags and shoes from myself, i found myself always tempted to airbag. it was like my body was like 'dude, lets go play footbag :) '.

After my shins finally healed up i tried to get back into it, but i found i got really lazy, and i thought that i would suck because i hadn't played so i just never got around to it. the other reason was because i started playing world of warcraft (never play it, its gay, sucks, and is waay too addicting if you want to be good like i was) so i practically became a couch potato. i am so glad that i'm back because i'm already better (more consistent) then i was back then, and i've been playing now for about 2 weeks. muscle memory ftw

I'M NEVER QUITTING.....(again)

There is a huge force in footbag saying you need to improve combined with ignorance that the movement we do arent natural and they do cause repetitive stress injury. To get halfway decent at freestyle means you were very dedicated at some point. But if your body says ease up then you can just forget about challenging vasek some day. That doent mean footbag wont be fun but it all depends on your attitude.
Also I completely disagree with footbag as a 7 day aweek 365day a year sport. Most pro sports have an off season for recovery, or in mma they are in great shape and build up into superhuman before the fight. Amateur athletes and fighters build a core level of athleticism and endurance, and then do ramping up program to get into peak shape just before competition. They recognize that it is absolutely impossible to maintain this peak state constantly.

We've all stopped due to injury or simple annoyance for some time. I have over lack of playing partners, shin-splints, knee pain, back pain, ect ect. But have I ever "quit" from any of that crap? Hell no. As some have already said I'll quit not because I don't like it anymore but because I am unable kick well because of a large amount of pain. And even then I'm not "quitting" I'm "retiring" :)

I have thought about quitting footbag. It was at a time when I had no one to play with and I wasn't getting any better. I think the pure frustration caused me to sort of turn away from footbag. But now I have people to kick with and I'm starting to get a lot better. So, now I don't think I'll ever quit, unless some massive injury causes me to.
Miss playing footbag, hope to start kicking again soon

i quit footbag a couple times. i just started playing again after my longest break yet. roughly one month. The most discouraging thing about the sport for me is that nobody cares. why waste all my energy in this gay sport when nobody cares? a popular response has always been, wow, he has a lot of time on his hands. fuck you.

sorry. going a little crazy. lol.

during my break i started chilling with my friends and working a lot more for summer. i've had a lot of fun, but i don't really feel very accomplished with myself. i've also been working on my car a lot. which is fun. i'm happy with that and it does leave a good accomplished feeling. its pretty expensive though.

one of the major questions i had for myself was, "what would i be doing if i didn't play footbag?" well... hanging out with a lot more girls and friends and having the time of my life part of the time. being bored or working out for the rest of the time. i'm a bit more in shape now.

i've played the last two days. i'm a lot better than i expected to be. i haven't taken such a long break since november '04. i think i'll probably play from time to time because i'm bored if for no other reason. not sure if there will be time during school, but i'm taking breezy classes this semester so i should be fine.

for me, I play footbag because it's fun, and, like you said yourself, it leaves me with a good accomplished feeling. People may think you have alot of time on your hands, which may be true, I often think this about myself, but not everybody can accelerate in footbag, or even have the patience and dedication for it. what I like most about Footbag is that it's different for everyone.

Just my two cents though...

footbag is a non-team sport (mostly) and thats my favourite thing about it, basketball and soccer, the weak link effect is involved. you have to rely on other people to help you, footbag is all up to you.

that being said, it can get lonely sometimes when there is nobody to play with, and that has caused me to quit before. all my hack friends of the old day think i'm some kind of untouchable god, and so they mostly quit hacking. and everyone lives so far away from me. and no car = sucks.

i'll hang on until i get a vehicle

i was talking about working on my car. lol. after footbag i usually feel kinda empty. its not very fun for me unless i'm at a tourney. then sometimes its frustrating and sometimes its fun.

That's so weird. For me footbag is the single most fun and rewarding activity I've ever done, every time I do it. (Minus the first 6 months of taking forever to learn basic moves lol)

those first moves are the best, when you finally hit a legover your like "YAAHHH, finally". everyday for me after getting my lavers and stalling i learned at least one new trick (or variation) for like a month.

so if you ever get bored or want to quit, just learn a new trick (or variation) and then you'll feel really rewarding

That's interesting, and I'd love to hear older players thoughts on this. For a long time new moves was such a thrill for me. It was really a tangible measure of how hard I was working and my abilities. Then slowly it changed and now when I hit a new move, even a really hard one, I always feel like I knew I could hit it.

But, the thing I love most about footbag is not that moment, but the time while you're playing and you're totally concentrated on the bag and all your worries leave you. When you're in the right zone, that feeling is unbelievable. I'm sure you can get it from a lot of similar sports, especially martial arts, but I think the fact for me is that I've never done those kinds of other sports. I've only ever played team sports, where there certainly can be equal highs, but not the same present moment of peace that you can get from footbag.

[apology]Sorry for the stoner hippy kind of words. Those of you who know me know that that's not the case at all, but I understand if people dismiss this kind of stuff[/apology]
