Well I guess I should regret not doing this from the day I arrived, or sometime earlier, as I have been talking about doing it from day one.
So many places around Chile, you see people performing on the street. Here a street performances is not about being in the middle of the main square in a high traffic pedestrian area. No sir, you are there, on the Avenida itself.
So a lot of the time you see jugglers, sometimes acrobats and at night firetwirlers, there's also a bunch of other people with a range of quality. And I have continuously said, ok- I'm going to do that.
Then something in my mind has put me off doing it. So today I got home from the office where I do my internship, and I thought- today's the day.
My opening run was completely disastrous. I dropped probably nearly 10 times, and decided not even to enter the traffic to attempt to collect money. I didn't really have any plan of what tricks I was going to do, or anything like that, but as I went on a similar theme came along.
I used two bags, one elemental one that has these little streamers on it. That would be to start out and get some attention, do some high kicks, things like neck stall, ducking and spinning. Most of the time I would eventually drop it, but hopefully that will change to. After a drop, I would introduce my other bag, which is the Hania bag I use all the time, and do some regular tricks. In most of the runs, I would finish with a phoenix.
The second round went a lot better than the first, and I got a few coins for my troubles. In my analysis, the best I have seen is a person get 5 different cars giving them some money. My best today was 3, which is pretty good for the first time.
As plenty of people have said to me, people will like it, because it's not played here. I probably played for about 45 minutes today. I could have gone on longer, but the traffic patterns seemed to change against my favour, with a lot of the time towards the end there being no cars in sight when the lights went green.
I was also getting a bit sore. I would like to try and do this everyday, and I will definitely keep a record of how much money I make in how much time each go. I'm also going to keep track of the best times to play, and what happens with the traffic flows.
So in my debut, I got 5400 pesos, which is about $10.80 in 45 minutes. I should have continued on for longer, but my other worry was that the more money I got, the more chance I would go home empty handed, as someone would come by and steal my collection. One lady gave me a 1000 peso note, which I was pretty happy with. I also received 2 x 500 peso coins. I was also glad nobody gave me any 1 peso coins, those are really not worth anything- they have a value of 0.02 cents.
So I haven't been working for all this time, it would have been good to have been passing the time in this excellent money earner...but I think I can't look back on that, I have to look to the future, and what I'm thinking is if I can make enough money from playing in the streets, I will put it towards a ticket to Worlds.
Something else that has come up, that of course still needs a lot more development, but there is a chance I may go on the equivalent of "Chile's Got Talent", or what ever they call it. I was actually invited to come and audition for the Australian version just before we left. Unfortunately it was literally the day before we were leaving, so there was nothing really that I could do.
So we will see how that goes, hopefully well- if not, it's no big deal at all. It would be cool to go on Chilean TV though.

I went and played down in the streets again this evening. It wasn't quite as successful as my go at it yesterday- though I had some competition. A guy selling the recyclable bags for shopping, and then some guys further down the street selling strawberries and other fruits.
First I saw those guys, so I went to a different corner. It was just no as good as the other corner. I had quite a few turns and regularly came up empty handed. Also the lights were shorter, so there were times when I had to finish up as the light turned green.
1100 pesos for today, which takes it to 6,500 ($13). Of course that is not very much money. However, if I continue to plug away, it could increase. Imagine if that count was at dollars instead of pesos...
Today's efforts were pretty disappointing, but I will try again tomorrow. I haven't spent any money today, so in a rare occasion lately, I am up overall, for two days in a row.
I got a call today about going down for this TV show, which will be screened on the channel Mega. I'm not going to say to much about it yet, but it's not quite a talent show, something a bit different. I don't really know exactly what's happening with it, but hopefully I can play Footbag on TV- that's something I still haven't been able to do yet, and doing that in another country would be a pretty cool achievement.

I went to that TV audition. I have my doubts now if I made it in. I had to wait a really long time until I had my turn. I am not sure if I would go back even if I did get selected- it was a bit of a waste of a day really.
On Saturday I went to this Edcamp event, it was an education conference, or as they call it "unconference". The idea is that, for one, it is all free, and that anyone can make a presentation.
I made a presentation about sports and language, and about using sports (specifically Footbag) in the classroom to help teach language. I think it went pretty well considering that I just made up my presentation on the spot.
In a few weeks time, I will be one of the editors on the I Love Chile site, which I have been doing an internship on. The nice fact is I will be getting some money coming in- though I will need to find other work to keep up the cash flow.
Played yesterday evening by the pool. There were some other guys down there and I got talking to them, they seemed pretty impressed with my game. The other night I got my second highest consecutive kicks score- 1510.

it's been a few weeks since I've written here. I mentioned in the last post that I went to a casting for a TV show. I had pretty much given up on the idea/just plain forgotten about going, when I got a call from the people involved in the show, and I will be heading down this week to film for the show.
I think it will air in a month or two from now. Hopefully I can get a good show and get a clip to put online as well. That should all be fun though, or at least a good story to write about.
I got sent a bag from Phat Tyre footbags, I quite like it actually - I think it will be really good for doing performances. It's much bigger, and it's yellow. I had my first session with it a few days ago, and I hit stuff like fog, double spinning clipper, ripped warrior and a few other tricks that are pretty hard for me with it.
So I will probably use that one when I go to the show on TV. I have been playing pretty regularly still, not too much new stuff. The idea of going to Worlds this year is receding further into the world of the impossible.
While it's a nice thought, it's probably not going to be economically feasible for me, as I haven't really earned any money in about 6 months. You never know though, maybe this TV appearance could lead to something...let's see what happens.
I have been pretty busy with writing and editing in my job, so I haven't got anymore of my interview series done. Doing that sort of thing as a job makes you less inclined to write in blogs, or add to ideas for projects. I will get back on to that shortly.
We have had a friend staying with us here in Santiago for the last week, it's been good to see a familiar face and I've met a couple of new mates during the last couple of weeks too.

haha, don't know if "fish taco" is on the menu in Poland (I've never been..).
I have been playing with the big bag quite a lot, I haven't felt restricted by doing that at all, I can hit pretty much all my normal things.
I had a session the other day, with a normal bag...I hit spinning ducking osis on the flipside for the first time. I believe hit leviathan also - although I would have to get it on tape at some stage to be absolutely sure. I haven't hit they before anyway.
I think Worlds is off the table for me entirely. We may have found a place to live though, so hopefully that will all go well.

There is an interesting thread in the "General Footbag" section about Move Set Management. I replied in there but I think I'll expand my thoughts on my own game, and ideas of move set management.
Another thing I notice a lot is some people saying they are frustrated with the level they have after playing for x amount of years. One other, other thread I really like is the consecutive kicks one, with lots of posts from Jon S. Partly inspired by that thread I broke my consecs record a while back, with a new score of 2015. It was funny though, as that was my first attempt in what I had planned to do throughout our trip in Asia. Of course, midway through the trip I sprained my ankle, so that put an end to that.
I had a good feeling some days back on a consecutive kicks run, but I guess one problem was the chasm between my old best score (1214). So I got my second best ever score, of 1510. I like consecutive kicks, I think the 10,000 mark is an achievable goal for me, however the key issue is it takes a long, long time. But that's for another day.
As for this set move management, I guess it's a good question, what is the best way to learn, and to keep the tricks in good shape. Well I guess you could say the answer is to practice them all, all the time.
However, I don't think that's really the case of what people do. For me, lately, I have been working on improving my stronger sets (stepping, pixie) and giving myself a greater range of strong tricks from each of those sets, as well as tricks that link between the two sets.
I guess I have been working on that for long enough, so now I should begin more focus on the sets I'm not so good at (atomic, quantum) with of course, continuing to work on things which have already been consolidated.
My friend Bron was in town last week, she filmed a couple of runs of me playing. Nothing particularly exciting, but it's good to get some video in the blog.

Neither of these videos are particularly exciting though. I never really play well in front of the camera, which is kind of unfortunate. What I wanted more to show is, hey look at my cool spot to play!
I guess once I get some money together I would like to get a camera. I don't mind too much about the quality. It's very annoying that I lost my camera in Australia - just before we were heading overseas. I don't know what happened to it...it may turn up in a bag or something sometime, that was good for what I needed, it filmed in HD as well.
Cameras are pretty cheap these days anyway, though I am holding out to actually get some money, which I currently don't have any of.
Going to an interview on Thursday at a hostel - I think it's to be the manager, or assistant manager, I'm not 100% sure, but let's see how that goes.
We will probably move into our own departmento next month, so I will have to come back to visit to use the pool and the good playing area
.
I played in a pick up soccer match last night, I'm feeling kind of sore after that, but I think I should be able to get in a session today.

Hey Mat, thanks for the kind words
I was hoping I could make it to Worlds this year, but it seems like a faraway dream at the moment. Will you go this year?
You should come to South America some time!
I think my game has improved overall, I guess I have been taking it a lot more seriously in some aspects over the last year or so.
In other news, I have lined up my next interview for the Shred Global series, I think this one will be a good one.
In other other news, I played today. I noticed that my shoes are heading towards their dying days....I wonder if they sell shoe goo here in Chile...
But after playing I feel a bit of a pain in my ankle, which is something I don't want to feel.

Should have my next interview up over the weekend, that's the plan anyway.
I guess I need to get my time management a bit more under control. That and probably some other things too.
Hit one of the goals I set myself a little while back - 50 guiltless. My previous best was about 32 or so, so I was fairly concerned about dropping it at the mark around 46 or 48.
I found myself repeating a lot of tricks, particularly as the count got higher. Just repeating the tricks that came easier. However, I got to the goal. Of course I dropped on the 51st contact, which was a blur.
I got a call back about the TV show. I probably mentioned that a while ago. I have to go in next week to do the filming, so that should be pretty cool. Although it will probably be more likely a lot of waiting around. However, if the end result is that I go on TV to play footbag, then that's good.
We are going to move into our own place next week. So that's a step of progress.

New Footbag interview - with Ken Somolinos (Part One).
I will get the next part up next week. It's good to get that back into the swing of things, and hopefully I can continue with that.
Have been playing a reasonable amount. The other day I played right until it was dark. It doesn't get dark til about 9:30 here, so that was a cool feeling.
Tomorrow I'm going for a tryout for this TV show....I don't really know actually, but it should be an interesting process.
We are going to move into our own place next week, much more in the centre of things. Of course, I can't really afford to be doing that yet, but let's see how that all goes. We had some money from our wedding, so the first month we don't have to worry about.
I also went and talked to the LAN office the other day, as I had booked a return ticket when I flew from Australia. Hopefully I will be able to exchange that to go somewhere else (probably Colombia, I would say). LAN have also announced they are reducing prices throughout South America, which is fine by me...

Props on 50 guiltless, and also on the impending move. For me, footbag has always been an invaluable way to keep sane during times of big transitions.
I also just wanted to thank you for the interview. I had a lot of fun doing it. It's nice to stop and reflect every now and again on where you are in the game, and where you've been.
Best of luck with the move and the tv show.

cheers Janis - are you still in Canada? Been playing much.
The filming went ok. It was a very long day and a bit stressful really.
We weren't allowed to take any pictures at the filming, so I will have to wait until it shows on TV.
I will write some more about it another time.
I have been playing a bit - my friend has a rooftop pool which is a great place to play. We took a little bit of video, I will try and get that online in the next few days.
I am waiting for a guy now to come and install our internet at home, which will be a big positive.

So we are getting more settled in at our place, and now we have the internet connection which is another step to getting settled in.
I went to an event put on by the people from Tumblr yesterday (one of the social networking platforms) that are available, and there are a whole bunch now).
I have been thinking for a long time, and Ken mentioned it in the interview I did with him a while back, but as a community, our efforts in the world of "social media" are quite poor.
Almost every day people are putting cool videos up online, but probably only half the footbag community are seeing them (if that), and other people aren't too interested.
Anyhow, I went to this event and I specifically asked the guys from Tumblr what they though of the potential for small sports that don't get TV coverage to increase their presence through the platform.
It was interesting because they weren't so confident, but I had a cool idea brewing in my mind. The whole concept they have is about being a platform for artists, music, etc. A very visual platform.
What I plan to do is act more like a "curator" and share what I find in my travels. This will include videos, pictures, interviews, TV show appearances, anything I can get my hands on really.
Hopefully people will get interested in it - and not just people inside the footbag scene. I am also going to make a similar, but different project called "South American Freestyle" - this will be much more broad in scope of sports (skating, surfing, freestyle football, footbag, snow sports) anything really - but its'going to be limited to things taking place in South America, or South Americans doing the things in other places.
I am hoping this will allow me to build a strong network in South America with other people doing cool things, but also can be a place where companies looking for cool stuff can come to the site and check out some stuff.
Then after a while, I will be rich...
(not really...that's not something I am so interested in, I am much more interesting in gathering a cool collection of content). I think it will be a fun project.
Anyhow, first things first I will get some content going, and then I will let everyone know what the project is all about
I have a good feeling about it, I think people will like it.

Hi blog - happy Easter, feliz semana santa
I was full of ideas in my last post.
As a matter of fact I am full of ideas all the time, and it's a key problem as I have so many ideas going at once I am unable to control them all. So that's going to be my main thing to work on.
Footbag wise, I had spender off my foot twice
today - but no finished product. That's something I've been working on a long time, and I can feel it coming close.
We are down near the coast for the long weekend. Francisca's brother has headed further north so we are staying in his house. We headed a little way north today - the big crowds really held up our progress, but the first place we stopped, Quintero - I liked that the best.
Here is a short video. Fans of "big shred", skip this one (or any video of me...) this is just a shot to get some of the beach in the background.
