This post really has two completely seperate questions, but I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.
The first:
I'm on a time and money budget. If I only go to one tournament in 2008, which should it be?(in America)
Second(kind of off the wall)
Is there anything wrong with using tournament funds to pay for a upper level player to come to your event. I don't really think there's anything wrong with it and if I'm at a tournament, I would much rather have high quality shred there than a big cash prize. It just seems like an issue that people would have varied opinions about and I'd like to hear the discussion. _________________

having never been to new year's jam, i will STILL say new years jam, just because it's (probably) the largest jam in NA. Other than that, MFJ is really good, and Hackrifice is gonna be Huge this year (shameless self promotion).
as to bringing in high caliber players, it depends how you got the funds.
if they were given to you by a sponsor for a specific purpose, like getting a venue or helping to get t-shirts, then yeah, probably a bad idea to spend them on bringing vasek down to your comp. If it is revenue generated from a previous tournament, like from shirt sales or registration, then by all means feel free to spend it on what ever you want. Personally, when i hold a jam, my first priority is making sure the players who come out are well taken care of, so extra cash usually goes towards taking care of their needs, like getting tons of water on site, providing snacks, covering meals as best as possible, and providing non shred entertainment. Granted, if i was able to do all that and still had money left over, i would certainly consider bringing in a high caliber player.
edit: i have to again stress how important i feel it is to take care of the players who voluntarily come out to your jam. They are the folks who are going to be coming back year in and year out. with out them, your jam doesn't happen, so i feel any extra cash you have should be put towards taking care of your players. _________________

I've never been to New Years Jam, either, but "Colorado Shred Symposium" and "Seattle Juggling and Footbag Festival" are probably the other two biggest U.S.A. tournaments.
New Years Jam is... at New Years.
CSS is in the first handful of months of the year
SJFF is... in November this year, I think. _________________

I would go too the new years jam!
Paying for top players to attend a jam is something I might do, But too pay them to attend a prize money event is not something I would do. I feel that with the growth of freestyle that it is real easy for a unknown player too come and win freestyle at almost any local event. As far as net, that would be very unlikely. Many people come to these events and post entry fee's and pay there own way too/from these events, and I don't think that they should be asked too foot the bill for any of the people they compete against. Part of becomming a world champion is taking on the world, and too do this you must find a way too travel the world. Sponsorship is what individuals need to offset expenses.
Well thats my opinion in short. _________________

I'd also say come to NYJ. Because I am 100% objective.
I don't think there's anything wrong with spending the money to bring in a top level player - it could be a draw that makes your event more successful. However, if you got that money under the condition that it would be used for a specific purpose, then obviously you should use it for that purpose. _________________
