120 panel patterns anyone?

Post by liston319 » 29 Jun 2010 18:56

I have stitched some 32 panel footbags and have heard of bags with 120 panels and thought that it would provide a pretty good challenge to make one. I was wondering if anyone has come across, knows the patterns or knows where I could find the patterns to try to make one because I have looked everywhere and have come up empty handed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Looks like one hell of a job! There are 2 different types of hexes in there as well as pents. How many of each, I dont know. I cant really offer much more advice than good luck!

basically, 122 and 92 panel bags use the same 3 different shapes. when i put together templates for a 92, i started with the same pent and hex i use for a 32, and then created a regular hexagon with the same number of stitches on each edge as with the pentagons (and shrunk the whole thing to about 50-60% of its original size). here's my template for 92 to give you a sense of what you should be shooting for.

for a 122, you'll need 12 pentagons, 30 regular hexagons, and 80 hexes with short/long sides. whatever you do, don't underestimate the sheer number of panels, you'll need to make them very very small if you want the bag to turn out standard size.

good luck! be sure to post some pics when you're done!

Thanks for those numbers and templates! I'm going to take my time on this and pay very close attention to everything and we will see how this turns out! Hopefully it will be done within a week or so and I'll put up some pics!

Funny you posted this. Im halfway through my first 92 panel. Its small, kinda tedious, and lots of starting and tying knots, but it looks sweet.

Good luck! Try not to get wrinkly hexagons, I dare you :)

Well unfortunately I had to buy more ultrasuede light because I ran out but don't worry it's going to get done!

Will, what do you rescale your pattern to? After I make a couple 62s, I'll go after a 92. You shouldn't jump from a couple 32s to a 120, in my opinion.

the one time i made a 92 i scaled my master template down to 13%. the one i uploaded here is scaled down to 25%. since you're doing a 122, my best guess would be to scale that image to about 25-30% (my 92 is a little over 2 inches in diameter, definitely not standard size)

your stitches will be super close together, so you'll definitely need to be patient. have fun with this project though, i can't wait to see how it turns out!

Will, then can you post your master template so we can easily scale it down?I don't think the 54% on this image is really working that great.

I killed mine. Put a hex where a pent shouldve gone, beyond repair.

Nah, it shouldn't be dead. Just cut off the thread you were using.
When stitching, almost nothing is beyond repair.

here it is in full scale, i'd probably print at 9 percent for a 122, or 11 or 12 for a 92. i moved it around a little so this thread wouldn't get really wide.

as far as the pent being where the hex should go, just remove it and keep goin :)
