The Music Man's Footblog!

Post by the_music_man » 11 Dec 2010 18:33

Profile- Ryan Straub-Fisher. 16 years of age. Born, raised, and still reside in Erdman, Pa. It's a little hole-in-the-wall town about an hours drive from Harrisburg. It goes without saying that I love footbag, but I'm also quite fond of Soccer, Obstacle racing, Hiking, Track, and playing the Flute.

Footbag intro -Alright, I am a complete and utter noob as far as the sport of Footbag is concerned. Now, although I am new and pretty much suck... I still love it. I was introduced to Footbag the same time i was introduced to a hacky sack. So I started out on a completely blank slate!! NO experience doing anything.

Influences- Nick Polini
That was the person that introduced me to the best sport ever. He showed me basic kicks, and stalls. And if it wasn't for him being the generous person he is and giving me my first bag, I prolly wouldn't have continued kicking. But here I am today, kicking and getting better every day. All I have to say to this man is Thank you.

FuNtAsTiKs- Funtastiks was a footbag tournament that was held in harrisburg. I went to the tournament with Nick and bunch of his friends. Seeing as how I went to that tournament a week after I started kicking, I didn't compete :P. But Nick and everyone else did amazing. Seeing all of those people there do really well inspired me to practice and get better.

Dude! Thanks for the kind words man! That's so nice of you to mention me :) I really am so stoked that you genuinely got into it that day. I could sort of tell you were going to get into it when I saw you buy your first 32 panel, and then kick it around with that other kid who was just starting to play. I'm definitely down for a session sometime around xmas break. Keep practicing until then! And let me know if you have questions on tricks or anything like that that I might be able to help you out with. Peace dude.

Thanks, can't wait. But I has a question: where can I get materials to start stitching bags?

Any fabric store near you. Look for microfiber, ultrasuede light, or microsuede. Or if you wanna do some experimentation, so you don't have to waste fabric, use a damn shirt! :)

Finnally figured out how to do an osis, at 11 O'clock last night! I would have immediatly thrown my lavers on, grabbed a bag and practiced but I needed the sleep for the 3 tests I had today. I hate Geometry, American History, and English!

But the second I get home...
[F.Y.I. I post a lot of my modified stuff from my phone :P ]
... I'm putting my lavers on, practicing and hitting ten straight Osi!

About a two hour practice today. Finally nailed atw's. Weak and dominant sides! :D plus my weakside clippers are getting stable. Best string was a 26 hit with the best part being... (my footbag notation is horrible  ) outside stall -> clipper stall -> toe stall -> atw -> clipper stall.

Id say today was very productive :D :D

Hey Ryan, do you have any way to record some video of yourself drilling/playing footbag? I was thinking if you made one video every other week (or however often you feel like it, the more the better), I could check them out and help you with tricks that way. I've been giving you tips through here and through facebook, and since I'm kinda semi-far away, i figured this would be a cooler, more beneficial idea to help you out. I'm teaching a friend at my college right now and we have a session every other night or so and he said I'm a pretty good teacher, and I like teaching footbag to beginners. He's stringing tiltless about 4 contacts deep and he's only been playing for a week. I feel like I could help get you there by coaching you through videos. Lemme know dude.

Nice dude! haha but yeah, when you record:

 Try to get all the tricks you can hit so far.
 Mention if you can hit it both sides or not yet.
 Let me know tricks you're having trouble with that maybe you need tips on.
 Any other general questions about a trick.

Then I'll do my part and analyze to try to help you out. This is gonna be cool, can't wait for the first one, considering last time I saw you with a footbag, you could only do toe stalls and kick it :P

Alright, but I'm gunna tell you that string was pure luck so there will be a lot of drops when I try my atw's and my clippers :P

That's good though because then I can analyze what you're doing wrong and give you tips to do them correctly. Catch my drift?

Yeah, I got a video captured but the lighting conditions are pretty bad and you can only see me waist down. Where can I upload it?
