Twill Rod Lavers
Twill Rod Lavers
I've been just looking in Ebay and other websites on the Rod Laver shoes. Turns out theres 2 that come out most in my search results. That TWL kind and the original ones ( I guess?). It seems that the original Rod Lavers are $10 more than the TWL ones. If so is there any advantage on the original ones then the soft fabric one? Because if not I would most definitely get the TWL ones

twills are my favorite! I have used them for a few years now. They look a little cooler than other lavers IMO and the material around the ankle is the twill material instead of the pleather material that they use on mesh lavers.
You're in luck! score 'em!
When you decide you want to mod them, go to youtube and so a search for "Matt Cross Rod Laver" and you'll find my modification tutorial video.

Don, I have definitely heard of this. I would not do it myself - the twill is very thin and very light and soft and weak. The inside layer is grippier, stronger, and definitely soft enough.
Calven, you should edit this post (upper righthand corner of your orig. post) so that the title says "Twill Rod Lavers".

well, I should say, a little stiffness doesn't bother me, because it's good form and not the material that stalls the bag.
I find that the twill material itself is a little bouncy or un-grippy or poofy or something like that, and that it doesn't work well on top of the inner layer, IMO.

You just reminded me of the time our footbag friends were visiting from Salt Lake City (Eric and Kristie if any of you know them). Penske had a few too many beers and offered to mod Kristie's new twill Lavers. He totally destroyed them! Ripped them to shreds and handed them back to her. It was hilarious!!

The outer twill layer is too week if you mod the inner mesh out of the shoe. I did this for pair of Twills for Benny Kellman, and after one session of footbag the inside surface was busting straight seams over and over (right along to how the twill is patterned on the shoe).
If you're going to play in twills, it's recommended that you mod the outer surface of the shoe to keep its integrity, if you plan on modding them.

Calven, they fit like other lavers.
Kurt, here's the good news - they are not noticeably different than mesh lavers. You can mod mesh lavers in exactly the same way as I mod my twills (removing the outer layer on the toe and inside) to get a shoe that plays exactly the same way). If you just gotta have those stripes on the outside and heel, use a marker
otherwise, check ebay twice a week and you should have some good results within a few months.

If you mean the Rod-Laver mid-top, where the shoe has the ankle support covering the ankle, people have modded them in the past. Some more than others, with... sub-par results. They're either good for walking or for Footbag Net, imo.
Get the lo-top Rod Laver. It'll do you some good if you want to pursue Footbag Freestyle. The Twills are exceptionally much cheaper than the mesh, especially if you find a listing on ebay so by all means go for the twills if you wish.

I should probably list the ones we have on eBay
We have 3 pairs of the red striped ones and 2 pairs of the green striped ones...all size 8.5
I also have one pair of size 8 Leather lavers in white/forest green.
Good to hear they can be made usable for shredders!
If anyone wants them let me know.
