32 Panel Color Patterns

Post by Donovon » 10 Jan 2010 19:25

Alright, I know there was a thread that covered this before (which can be found here). However i thought that id try to pick this apart the best i could, for the likes of both stitchers and buyers. I tried my best to find capture different angles. I will try my best to give credit where credit is due (i hope people don't mind if I use their pictures). I am terribly sorry if I have left you out.

Here goes:
Every 32 Panel Bag consists of:
12 Pentagons
20 Hexagons
Every 32 panel color pattern is basically a play on those numbers.

Solid:
Color 1- 12 pentagons/20hexagons

Color 1- 12 Pentagons
Color 2 (X)- 12 Hexagons
Color 3 (Y)- 8 Hexagons

-Color Y will never touch eachother and will form squares

***Variations- Color 2 or color 3 may be identical to color one, making two possible 2-color blurs

As far as putting them together, I personally consider there to be two types of patterns: Those that center themselves around a pentagon and those that center themselves around a hexagon. Generally, this really only makes a difference when looking at a bag and is pretty obvious. However, to me it makes a difference in how i physically put the bag together. I hope I can explain this correctly.

Pentagon Centered:
Probably "easier." After the first flower, the five pentagons are added around that. (then 5 more and you are left with the last pent)
ImageImage
12/8 Blur //// Spiral
Sorry, i typically do this with my phone.

Hexagon Centered:
These patterns, to me, once you get half way, put themselves together. However, with a hexagon as a center, you might need to sew 3 pentagons to be able see the hexagon as the center.
ImageImage
6 color spiral //// 4 color atomic
Sorry again about the quality.

It might not exactly fit, but i wanted to include this:
The difference between the two-stitch bags and the three-stitch bags are as follows:
Matt Cross (slightly modified) wrote: -feel - two-stitch bags are a little stiffer to start (because the thread is further from the edge of the panels, so there is more material on the inside of the bag)
-appearance - the edges on two-stitch bags are not as straight as the edges on three-stitch bags. This is purely cosmetic
-cost - two-stitch bags take less time [to stitch]

From here, this is pretty much the best advice anyone could offer when attempting to crack a new pattern:
Wasabi wrote:
Matt Cross wrote:when making a new color pattern for the first time, find a picture of the same pattern.

Focus on ONE pent at a time, and the colors surround it. start with a pent that is very... "important" to the color scheme. ie: the "tip" of a claw, the beginning of a spiral, etc etc. Just get that first pent down. Then find out how other pents of the same color, or part of the same part of the pattern, relate to that starting pent.

So, pick a good starting pent, go very slow, and focus on one at a time. if you do that, you can do any pattern.
I love color patterns :D
Props everyone on nice bags!
Hope this helps,
~Donovon

Edit: Looks like the site hosting my photos changed servers or something, I had to edit all of the links. Sorry that they have been down for awhile. Let me know if this happens again (although i hope it doesn't, lol)

Hi Donovon,

Maybe take out the part about size, as that has more to do with stitching style and the templates.

great thread! this will surely help many people who are trying to figure out some of the more complex color layouts.

and matt, when you make 2 stitch bags, why do you bite deeper from the edge? does it have to do with bag growth during break in? i sew both styles the same distance from the edge, but you've got more experience than a lot of the folks on here. thanks :)

I stitch my 3-stitch bags very close to the edge.

The stitches are bigger on 2-stitch bags (using the same templates) so if I were to stitch as close to the edge on a 2-stitch bag as I do on a 3-stitch bag, the corners of the panels would pop out, making an ugly flaw in the bag.

i would add, dont be shy, i you dont understand a patern that someone created, ask him how he made it ... Donovon asked me for a patern iv called "toxic" ... i dont know what i meant by that, but if i knew, it would be a pleasure to help him out. so you can ask me anything about patern, and prolly that MC, Waylon and some more stitchers can help you too.

Thats a good point. Awhile ago i could only find a picture of one side of the 6 stripes pattern on Brian's bag, so i asked him to help me out.
I was mostly looking for the so called toxic pattern so that i could include it in my thread.

Terribly sorry. Perhaps he posted a pic of your bag. I went through a lot of posts. Fixed now.

You have to match that circle to the circles of the colors on the left perfectly and left click your mouse for the color to change.

Hey donovon, I need your pattern figuring outing skills for a bag I wish to make. It is called the Yin Yang and I have been trying for a couple months to figure it out how to put it together, but I just can't do it.
Image

It is the upper right image. If you can, please help me figure out how to do this pattern.

To be honest, myself and others have tried to figure out that pattern before. But its really hard without a picture of the back.
My best adivce would be to try the tri-color design. But take three adjacent colors one color and the other three a different color, and switch the polar hexes, while surrounding them by the other color. So youd have the single hex, surrounded first by the opposing color (same thing on the other side) and the rest of the bag would be a mix of that tri-color design.
If you try that, post a pic.
