Making bags: instructions/tutorials
The boxy 8ps are caused by using triangles. You need to you rounded triangles.

The first set of patterns contains the best 8p pattern.
Thr second contains the type of 8p that the dirtbag is made with, with hexagons, but I wouldn't use that one as it isn't even. But knowing the way it is put together, you can make you own.

Would it be advisable to buy this http://www.fieldsfabricsonline.com/Ultr ... _2565.html or is it a waste.

So I'm starting a blog about footbag, and in it is a stab at a tutorial about sewing a 32-panel bag. I've got some good pictures and tried to make it worthwhile, so see what you think: http://umbrellabags.wordpress.com/. While you're there, you can check out (they're for sale!) some of the bags I've made.
Got a few stitching questions? This seems like the place to ask.
First, for those that still trace the pattern onto the fabric, what have you found is the best way to minimize wasted fabric? I'm still learning and trying to waste as little fabric as possible on these bags that aren't turning out to be playable.
Second, shipping from Field's Fabric was crazy for me. I bought 3 color's of .125 USL totaling just over $21. Shipping cost me over $25. What did it cost you to ship it if you live in the US? I'm trying to determine if it would be worth it to have it shipped somewhere in the US and then reshipped up to me in Canada. Just seems like it was too expensive for shipping on such a light package.
Thanks for any help with these.

Try this generator: http://commo.xtreemhost.com/
Have a play around with template sizing to find what you like best.
If you cut your pieces on the line,
For a golf ball size bag, put in 18mm, 18mm and 20% (that's stitching between 1 and 1.5mm from the edge.)
If you like to cut around your pieces, and stitch on the line, try 14.5 or 15mm for both lengths, and 25% in the generator.
And a really good tensioning/size tool is a thimble! (If you aren't sure what that is, it's just something round that you put in the pentagons for tensioning and tying off, so they all come out the same size)
My thimble is 17mm in diameter, and works really well with these sizes I have listed^^

Excellent job Ivan, when I watched it, I thought : Why does this video only have 16 views? Then I realised you just posted it the same day. I hope for you this gets known as THE footbag stitching tutorial video.
Btw, does a lot of you stitchers gather all panels at the end ? Or is it more of a preference thing ?

Re: Making bags: instructions/tutourials
Thanks! I would like to do one for 92 and 14 panel bags as well, when I get the time.
About gathering: when I learned how to stitch, I was taught to gather right when I finished the panel. After a few bags, I realized that the gathered hexes were making it harder for me to have consistent stitches (gathered hex + normal pent = crooked stitches and weird wrinkles) so I ended up waiting till the end to gather. It also makes it easier for me to get into a rhythm (stitch everything, then gather everything instead of going back and forth). Also, I hate gathering/tying off so I just put it off till the end, or if I have a large order, I will just stitch a few bags and then gather them all at once.

Thanks, I'll try this method !
Re: Making bags: instructions/tutorials
It took me a while, but I finally managed to watch your video this morning.
I think, it's one of the best filmed tutorials out there. I like that you really explain everything in detail and take your time.
Thank you for the effort.
P.S.: I would like to see a 92 tutorial as well.

Re: Making bags: instructions/tutorials
i started making bags only about a month ago, the first bag i made was just terrible, but once i figured out the layout of a 12 panel, everything seemed easier. after about 6 or so 12 panel bags, i think its an appropriate time to venture into the 32 panel realm. i have now made around 8 or so, and am looking for the 92 panel template. so i think anywhere from 6 to 10 bags is a good bench marker when going between levels of making templates
i am the man.
