Anton's Footblog

My first exposure to freestyle footbag was when i met Zach Jahner at Oakland Community College about two years ago. I thought his tricks and styles were so freakin awesome i just had to learn! I went home and instead of studying Algebra, I bought my first pair of lavers and never looked back.

That same year I met the hardest kid I've ever known at Western Michigan University. Johnny 'Breakdown' Sarah. He is the one who taught me how to do a clipper, down, osis, refraction, mirage and other basics.

The following summer, I was studying biology in Australia and came to know a pair of gentleman known as Lotusk and the Bad dr. O'wheel. These boys really helped me step my game up and although I still consider myself an amateur, I've seen serious improvement stemming from their wisdom. In beautiful Tassie with the HFC is where I was taught pdxmirage, ducks, whirl and possibly my most important milestone to date, consecutive far downs.

I am currently in Michigan, shredding regularly with my friend Donovon

How's the game progressing?

You should go to NYJ in Chicago if they do it again.

Hit flipside pdx illusion for the first time last week and still frustrated with pixie sets. Ben gave me a good tip though that seems to work. Point the toe downwards while pixie-ing. basic yet helpful.

I will def show up the next NYJ CFan! How long have you been at freestyling, bud?

14.5 years. I'm ancient.

You should definitely go to NYJ. Going to a tournament is the best way to learn, get excited, and really be awakened to the possibilities in the sport. Good luck!

First day back on the bag in 14 days. The break was due to a rolled ankle.

Started with kicks and toe stalls to gauge my range of motion then after some light stretching began drilling ducks/dives with no adds just to get a pace going and try to make my ducking clipper sets as small and precise as possible.

Great energy and good control considering the injury and time off

Goals this season: Consecutive (far) drifters and consecutive ducks/dives

Current frustrations:Pixie open and close and DATW

Newest combo learned: Down>PDXillusion
Next level: OpenDown>PDXillusion

Good driveway session today

Beginning to gain control over spinning clippers and consecutive ducks

According to a matt cross tutorial i view recently, stepping sets are best performed with a tiny, but controlled set from the clipper as opposed to a flailing motion, so i was trying to apply the same concept to ducks/dives in hope that the "extra" uptime would appear, or give the illusion that the bag is more controlled.

I've been having some fun with osis latley and really starting to trust my flipside 99% which is also good news. For too long have osis and I had a love/hate relationship

I had two great shred sessions with my mate Zach Jahner over the last week and i learned a couple new styles. Ducking osis, peeking osis, pwhirl, fairy pickup and torque all in the last month. Flipside whirl is still crap however i learned how to do stepping sets properly this week and going to be practicing compound tricks with it. i suppose blur and sidewalk would be easiest so ill try starting there.

My good friend Mikie came to visit me the other day and we had a good shred in my garage. I was really impressed by his progression over a short period of time and it really pressed me into hitting bigger tricks in longer runs.

Great energy and flow this week! Hitting DLO/mixer almost every time now and busted 5 consecutive ducking downs for the first time. (ended with a slide-off drop but whatever I was proud of the first 4! Flipside illusion is finally cooperating...thank christ

First shred in about 3 weeks after a looooong break. I was pretty upset i missed NYJ in chi but my gf was here and it's not often we see each other so, whatever...

I was a tad rusty today with linking tricks but I virtually picked up where I left off on new tricks and style progression. About two thirds into my session I had a flawless syposium mirage and thought it was time to try a drifter, then BANG! First toe drifter ever! I'll be working on flipside asap

Vegas jam in 11 days! excited to meet a handful of you guys!

The last few sessions I've been keeping dexes and delays real clean with good balance. Trying a few new ones but just getting that confident control together

Give us this day our daily shred, and forgive us our drops, as we forgive those who drop in our 4-square

Zach and I had a wicked shred sesh the other day in preparation for the Vegas Jam! Trying to get my Atomic sets real dialed in and refining ducks and spins.

Best of luck to my bro Johnny out in South Korea for the next year. I'm looking forward to seeing how our styles diverge and progress the next time we cross paths

Great to meet you this weekend, Anton! You picked an excellent tournament to be your first. Hopefully you had enough fun and met enough cool people that you'll start making it to more. I was very impressed with your shred. Try and play regularly with Zach; I really feel that will push your game in nice directions. Hope to see you at USO!

Vegas Jizzam was so much fun it shouldn't be legal

Post by Anton » 14 Mar 2012 19:17

Thanks Ken! And cheers to all the radical people I met this weekend. Evan was a great host and I was blown away by the talent brought from all over!

It was such a great opportunity to be exposed to the community. I really appreciate all the constructive criticism and encouragement!!!

I was really inspired by how professional the sport was treated.

Still high as shit from the jizzam

My first tournament, vegas jam 2012, was an absolute riot! I learned so much in such a short period it seems unreal. I had no idea of what I was capable of just being put in an encouraging environment.
Being around spectators who actually see/know the difference between mirage/illusion for instance, made me feel a little nervous at first, as I've played virtually solo my entire career and usually get mos of my feedback from non-players, but as I came to know the characters better through alcohol and roller coasters, the nervousness disappeared.

My first competition was a circle with Evan, Alex, and Zach... Fuck! I knew going into it that I was the freshman so it wasn't even about competition or even showing off, it was just about nerding out on this obscure artform we all get down on!

I'm shredding at a whole new level now and learning more tricks, more frequently then ever. Because as Corey told me outside Evans house the other day "sometimes you just gotta go for it!"

Thanks for everything guys and gals, see you out there soon!

Glad to hear of your improvements! Hope to kick with you eventually! Zach is a great guy to learn from. You're lucky you ran into him. He may come to our jam at PSU. If he does, you should try to come down with him to your second jam! I'm sure he'd appreciate some company on his car ride and you could definitely learn a shitload from everyone going. We're looking at around 22-30 possibly?

Post video soon?

Hope to see you at PSU in a few weeks!
