This is me for the Joulu this year. A bit of a mix of some thoughts with some tricks. It worked quite well, around the Australian Institute of Sport they have all these sports statues and I was able to play in front of them.

Thanks for putting that together. It's spurred me to brainstorm ways to make online competitions a bit more inviting for newer/more casual players.

yeah, I reckon there's a lot of potential there - particularly with this scavenger hunt kind of stuff. If (in most countries it is not an if), but if there is a continuation of the online learning, a lot of the teaching will be based on the "flipped classroom", which is basically where you set some final goals and the students have to figure out how to do it. Something like the scavenger hunt could work quite well in that case.

I have not been posting enough in recent times and that's something I'd like to change.

Though my computer is broken at the moment, so I'm on the lookout for a new one.

School has finished for the year, and that is a good feeling. I'll do a recap on the year in terms of footbag and the teaching, but I had some kids doing around the world, others playing four square and a couple of lessons with the preschool students.

Towards the end of the year, we had a colour run thing, so I got a video of me with a bit of colour on - https://www.instagram.com/p/CI2TqpYpkZd/

They are holding the NYJ as an online comp this year, I've been trying to get a few things for that. I've got two combos so far that pass the 21 add entry point for the add hunt, but I'd like to get a 24 or 25, the ones I've got only just pass into it. Here's one that didn't quite get there. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIz4_HAJ8h4/

Christmas time.

We've had our little celebrations. What I may do is get myself a new footbag as a self gift. I played with Dyalan a couple of weeks ago in Sydney and he had a new Hania bag, was great playing with that. One of the only in person sessions of the year, and I didn't even mention it....

https://www.instagram.com/p/CIp0jpkpHa1/

Worked out well in the end, because Sydney had a spike in Covid cases and they had to go partly into lockdown.

I've been working on the Scavenger Hunt which is part of the Joulu this year, some interesting challenges this year.

I've done some like 150 clippers, 200 toe stalls, which are not super hard, but take quite a while. I also did the challenge with the combo of knee bumps and flyers - I think it was stepping knee bump same legover>pixie knee bump same legover>pixie knee bump op legover>pixie op knee bump same legover>pixie flying butterfly. I got the 15 clipper tripless also. Here's one that was not quite successful. https://twitter.com/capitaleyes/status/ ... 6394118144

I worked in the hostel the last couple of days. There was barely anyone staying there and not much work to do. I made a couple of threads on Twitter.

The top 10 most watched Vasek videos this year - https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1341 ... 21441.html
The Joulu - https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1341 ... 27136.html

I missed the last couple of days as I think I reached the maximum tweets within a thread.

I'll post in the coming days some thoughts and plans for the coming year.

There are usually lots of good sales right after Christmas. I just got a new one after Thanksgiving, and there were some nice deals.

Glad to hear Dyalan is alive and kicking. Not sure what the mood is in Australia regarding COVID, but here in the States its a weird mix of optimism about the vaccines tempered by the onset of winter and the news of this new COVID variant that may be more transmissible.

If Worlds does happen in Colombia in the fall, do you think you'd go? I'm still curious to see what happens. I think a summer Worlds (in person) would really be pushing it, but maybe fall could happen. There is always the virtual option again.

My personal feeling is that Worlds will go virtual again this coming year. I would certainly love to go to Colombia for a Worlds, though I don't know if they will open up travel for us any time soon. At the moment if you come into Australia you need to go into quarantine in a hotel for 2 weeks at your own expense, so it would make any travel very expensive.
Not sure what the mood is in Australia regarding COVID
This is in an interesting one, because if you asked before that weekend where I had a kick with Dyalan, the mood would be that it's almost over, but there was an outbreak in Sydney over that weekend so that's given people a bit of a wake up call. Here in Canberra we have had very few cases but I imagine if we do get some cases it will spread easily because people are getting relaxed about it.

Also the vaccine has not started distribution here yet as I think they are looking to manage cases and maybe see how the rollout goes in other countries first. It sounds like you will need to have the vaccine to travel on Qantas flights once it's all up and running.

I just took a look at Colombia covid cases, looks like they are currently in their biggest uptick, 10,000 cases + per day at the moment. I don't think that looks like a reality for Worlds happening there next year. Looking at the Chile graph, they are on about 2,000 per day.

On the computer, I may get one, they don't cost that much in general at the moment, but we're having some issues with our car, so we'll see if that's going to eat into the budget, it's due in at the mechanic today.

I thought Dyalan was kicking really well the other day, I said it looked like he'd been playing regularly, but he said he only had a few kicks since we were doing some regular online sessions when we were in more of a lockdown period.

I'm working at the hostel today. I did a couple of shifts last week and a couple this week. There's not much happening, but I'm also getting paid from the school so that's a good way to get a little extra income over the holidays.

New year new you. Something like that. Or more of the same.

Pretty happy with this run I did today - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJfc8rYpdka/

I've also ticked off a few more items from the Scavenger Hunt. There's a bunch of things that I can't do at all, but I'm at around 20 points out of the 45. There's a few outstanding for me that I should be able to do - the toe tiltless and guiltless as well as 75 guiltless.

I've got to get things together for the NYJ online comp, one thing I do plan on is entering any online competition which become available this year. That starts with the NYJ. I've got a 50 contact run for rippin run but I think I can improve that. I've got a 22 add entry for the add hunt, that's a maybe if I can improve that. I've got some footage around for a shred off but haven't put anything together as yet.

I'm pretty happy with my footbag year. I participated in a bunch of stuff, including the online Worlds. I was pretty pleased with my Shred 30, which brought me in 11th place, though I would have liked to get 200+ (and probably would have if I didn't go off the screen on the last trick). I had a couple of in person sessions and a few online video sessions. I had some of the kids at school doing footbag and getting right into it. Some were playing four square quite regularly and a couple were doing some tricks as well.

In reality I've also had an easy year compared to many around the world. And compared to this time last year, the country is not on fire and you can actually breathe the air, so that's a strong upgrade.

Had a short kick today. For some reason my Instagram clip didn't come out well at all - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJhaXXzJxRn/

It's weird when you press a button to "cut" and then it just doesn't do that at all. Magic, huh!

In these next couple of days I would like to send of my entry for the NYJ. I also got a new addition for the scavenger hunt, photo at "Laver Place".

Caroline has just called in so I'll make it that for today.

I made a short post today on Instagram. Fairy ducking mirage>dimwalk is maybe a new combo. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJkx4pNJ30I/

I was playing around with setting from the heel after Josh Gayhart posted a video here - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJjp6JPAEi5/

Here's a litte wrap up of other footbag posts on Instagram for the past month. https://sportslashlife.com/footbag-on-i ... mber-2020/

I ticked something else off the scavenger hunt list today, 25 guiltless toe tricks. It's really a lot of slight variations on the same trick over and over again, but it ticked the box. I'm not very confident of the 100 toe tiltless and not so sure about general 75 guiltless, I think I'm running close to the end of the ones that are feasible for me to do.

As part of Erik's project to digitise all the old videos, Ian Pritchard has uploaded the video from the 2001. I was there partly, but I was basically a kid and didn't know any tricks. It was also part of an "X Games" kind of thing and I was actually more interested in the other sports, then there was a music festival the same day. So I haven't even seen myself in the background of any of the clips. I don't think they were filming much on that first day when they had the consecutive kicks and things like that. Anyway, cool to have that around. Look at the start of Lynton's routine, nobody would do that in these days, two big atomic tricks back to back to start things off. I certainly wouldn't anyway.

I went to the gym for the first time for the year today. The year is only a few days old, so not much of a big deal about that. I did a challenge for myself, starting with 1 burpee/10 skips with a skipping rope and keep building up that way (2/20, 3/30, 4/40). I gave myself three chances on each round if I couldn't completed the skipping, so I couldn't get there on 7/70. I think I got 67 or 68 the first time around.

Today there was a post from Twitter from Vasek with the hashtag #athlete - https://twitter.com/vasek_freestyle/sta ... 60/photo/1

And it made me think that a lot of us don't really think of ourselves as athletes. Despite the fact we train regularly for competitions around the world and so on and so forth. But maybe then we do that then drink a whole bunch of beers or whatever and maybe when the whole world is looking in thinking "oh lol nobody plays hackysack anymore", that maybe we are not taking ourselves seriously enough, or every chance we are taking ourselves too seriously. Who knows really.

Today I was working on three dex tricks. My aim was to hit 5 individual toe 3 dex tricks in my session.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJmug6lJ-yL/

I managed

pixie double switchover, fairy ss dlo, pixie ss dlo, smog, flip smog, pigbeater, tapping dlo

With some work I could get this list to ten and preferably get some combos between them. There's a couple of things in the Scavenger Hunt that would aid this, but I don't think they will happen for me within one week. Certainly something to work on though.

Short kick today. I've been getting things together for the NYJ. I don't have my computer at the moment so I've been looking at online video options. That's been a bit of a pain.

We did a long walk today. We've had the car at the mechanic for like a week, it's finally back, hopefully we are back on the road now. We are starting to look into getting a new car but that's a lot of money.

I hit fairy ducking pickup this evening, I think that's a new one for me - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJqFC-qJzWV/ - may have hit it once or twice before. I also did fairy motion which I have done before, but not for a while.

I also wrote this post about the NYJ - https://sportslashlife.com/footbag-new- ... es-online/ - hopefully I can keep consistent with posts on there, there is not always the time to do that but at the moment I have some available time to put into a few things.

Had a couple of short kicks today. I took Nico to the BMX track and was playing a bit while he was riding around. He had a bit of a crash, though that was not while I was playing. Good thing was he dusted himself off and continued. That's all part of the game with those kind of sports. I got a skateboard the other day from a local buy nothing group - old style with big wheels, so I rode that along with him and that worked pretty well.

Something I did was swirl and rev swirl on both sides. Here is a little run from there - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJsJoTjJWnd/ There were a bunch of people there but then it looked like a storm was coming so it cleared out a fair bit.

I also went to the gym and did a bit of kicking before I went into the pool. I did some box jumps on the 60cm, 5 x 10 of them. I was also doing some sprints and a few other things, then jumped in the pool for a short while at the end. I just remembered I left my drink bottle behind. I only got that the other day, so hopefully I can get it back.

We've booked Nico in for bowling for his birthday at the end of the month. Nice to get that sorted out.

Short kick today. Played on the grass and did some more "hack" style moves. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJvALp-p7XH/ - this run starts with fairy outside kick, not sure if I've done that before, felt pretty cool.

I also did a bike ride and had a swim. https://twitter.com/capitaleyes/status/ ... 51/photo/1

Will have to look at the scavenger hunt list and see if I can get anymore ticked off before the due date.

I was hoping to make a post on here each day through January with an accompanying Instagram clip. I haven't managed the posting but I've still put something up on Instagram each day.

- Inside the National Gallery - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJxNi8rpFm4/
- Francisca had a dress up party, I dressed as Angus Young from AC/DC - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJz91gLJ2bH/ - it was a fun party, lots of good dress ups.
- Couple of tricks after indoor soccer - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ2dr0LpvNR/ - first game back for the year. I scored 2 goals in a couple of minutes to bring us from 0-2 to 2-2, but then in the rush at the end we let in a couple more and lost 4-2. Was happy with the combo at the start of the video - tapping legover>pixie diving mirage
- Wasn't sure I would get a video yesterday. I had taken the kids to the river and kicked a little but not got anything on video. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ5l12Ep277/ Did this and then went for a short bike ride as it was getting dark. Revup>DLO, this is probably new for me, not sure.
- Today I'm back to work at the hostel, short round of footbag in the break. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ73J7npUNI/ Was working on shooting gyro toe. Not quite there. Definitely haven't hit that before. I also wanted to do ripwalk>vortex>ripwalk that's still to come.

So that's a bit of an update on what I've been doing the last week or so. It might be more useful to do a semi regular post than a daily post. What I do need to do is get my Scavenger Hunt list all together, I've filmed all the stuff that I can do, maybe there's a couple more I can submit but I've got to get the video together.

Here's a video to finish off. It's one I did before I was doing vlogs, but it's basically a vlog with a mix of footbag and skateparks at a few places around Canberra.

One more thing I've been doing, unrelated to footbag, this bloke has started a project to run a 5km run in every suburb or Canberra, in alphabetical order. This kind of stupid thing is exactly up my alley, so I have been following his progress and making a post for each suburb, with a bit of extra information on each suburb. I've learnt a thing or two already, and we're only into the B's. https://sportslashlife.com/running-act- ... rd-a2zact/ There are 100+ suburbs, so the posts will keep me busy for a while. It's good though, as it's given me a bit of a writing project, which I haven't really focused on much lately and it should be one that can last a while.

I've noticed you posting frequently on instagram. Very glad to see it.

It's cool that you have so many skateparks nearby. I live in a fairly rural area so there aren't many places for me to bring my board and mess around. I end up bringing it to the tennis court with me when I play footbag. Still fun to cruise around on it from time to time.

Ken has made some good videos with skate/shred also in the last couple of years. We have some quite good ones here in Canberra, though in other cities they are building a lot more facilities, though they don't sound to be going to do anything new here. I find them also a good place to kick as well. For one, plenty of flat space around. Another, people are already used to seeing various tricks and they might think, oh, that's cool.

Interesting though about the rural areas, I grew up in a rural town, and was thinking about doing carwashes and other fundraisers to get the local skatepark going. These days almost every town in Australia has some kind of skatepark (of hugely varying quality). Do you live on a property, or in a town somewhere?

Today's run - https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ9jkUMp7WV/

Had a couple of kicks, it was a very hot day today, so we had a swim as well and I did a little kick before splashing in. I was working on spinning ducking cloud stall into some kind of cloud pixie trick. I had a cloud PLO come off my foot, that could be quite cool, will keep working on that.

I've talked in this blog before about creating some kind of footbag encyclopedia type of thing. I've been thinking a bit about how that could be created. Could maybe start with a country thing. I might even do that on Twitter in the coming weeks, make a thread for great players from x country. Then you could have lists of any videos they've been in, good tournament results. I've always got to the thinking point and realised it would be a really mega project. Could be interesting though.

Anyway, another hot day coming tomorrow so there could another poolside session.

Awesome stuff on the scavenger hunt! I really liked the muted run, and the alternating clippers is super impressive.

Thanks for your summary of footbag clips from instagram on your sports/life blog, I've enjoyed seeing a few different people highlighted there.
