Top 5 Rap MCs?

Post by C-Fan » 31 Oct 2014 12:21

Who are your top 5 rappers all time? I'm looking specifically for rap ability, not the production of their albums. A good producer can make a shitty rapper sound OK, but a great rapper can be great even with a bad producer.

So who are your top 5? If you can include a Youtube clip of them, that much better.

I got curious about this and asked my friend PTA about his opinion. He is a hiphop expert often used by Danish newspapers and so on.

Here are the names he mentioned:
Aceyalone
Black Thought
Mos Def
Pharaohe Monch
Eminem
Tech N9ne

Some very good answers here so far. I'm looking forward to watching all the embedded YT links soon.

Surprised Del only got one mention, and no mentions at all for Gift of Gab (Blackalicious).

I've never heard of Gift of Gab, but they are listed in the same sentence as Del, so they must be great. I'll look into them soon

Check the album Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious - it's a classic!

Ellis, Dillon Cooper, Troy ave, and Los are some new school rappers on the come up that have some crazy good lines.

And I can't believe I forgot about Andre 3000. "Andre 3000 is so good no one mentions him as an Mc"--Mos Def

Kiss and Prodigy are top 5 rappers imo but their not quite as lyrically skilled. I'm NY biased though.

In no particular order (listing some as groups rather than individual MCs, hope that's okay):
The Phormula
Kid Cudi
Atmosphere
Lupe Fiasco
Chance The Rapper
-Daniel C. NY, USA. "Sacrifice a goat to our Lord and Savior Evan Gatesman".

Top 5 is super hard. I think mine would have to include:

 Gift of Gab (of Blackalicious)

 Notorious BIG. Can rap slow, fast, off beat, on beat, you name it. Clever as hell.

 Del the Funky Homosapien

 Eminem. Completely original flow. Fast, clever, and unique.

 Macklemore. For an MC who is constantly criticized for being overrated, Macklemore is actually really, really... bad. OK, I mostly just wanted to see if anybody was paying attention. Also, I can't decide who rounds out my Mt. Rushmore of MCs at the moment. Maybe I'll revisit this and come up with that last spot. Kinda leaning Mos Def, but there's competition here for sure.
