Looking for a Grad. School

Post by dblthnk84 » 07 Mar 2008 12:04

I should be getting my bachelors (in philosophy...) from MSU in around December and want to continue on with my education. After 4 years of not having anyone that I could easily get together and kick with I kinda want to try and find a school that would be near a footbag (and/or juggling) club, and I really wouldn't mind a warmer climate. Basically I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for grad schools that I could attend while still being able to hang out with some footbagers.

And yes, I realize that I could try to recruit new players, but I wouldn't. I'm lazy and would rather find a group of people that already kick then practically beg people to join me so that they can stop kicking in a month.

Thanks for any suggestions that could aid me in my search.

The univ. of Texas is pretty awesome. I would go there if I had the impetus to go grad school. Austin is a very fun town to live in, and cheap cost of living too. Great weather, lots of stuff to do both urban and outdoors, and it's the live music capital of the world. Kenny Shults invented many of the fundamental footbag tricks such as drifter and osis on the UT campus back in the early 80s. We have a freestyle scene of about 5-6 guys. We can pretty much play out doors all year round.

I would also recommend considering Univ of Oregon in Eugene and Univ of Montana in Missoula and if you are willing to bear the cold, Univ of Toronto.

Thanks, and nice sales pitch. I'm going to have to look into that one.

UNLV - University of Nevada Las Vegas

It's in Las Vegas, I don't think I need to let you know about the things you can do here. There are 2 pretty skilled shredders who live here and coincidentally we both go to UNLV. As far as wanting a warmer climate, you can't get much warmer than here. 4 hours from the beach and the Grand Canyon.

Univ. of Kansas has a good basketball team.

I'm 15 minutes away from the campus.

There is a shredder there, but we don't play with him too often.

I met you at NYJ and I thought I was pretty awesome...

edit:

We have tornadoes and it snows during spring. So screw Kansas.

University of Tasmania. Friendly locals, footbag, beer. Adventure going overseas, lots of international students. Probably a lot cheaper than the US too.

There are quite a few scholorships available for students looking to go in either direction between Australia and the US. It'd be worth looking into. There are respected philosophy departments at a number of Australian Universities.

I would say in all honesty that the most important things to be looking for in a grad school is the quality of your adviser (how you work together, if they will motivate you and get you done on time) and your funding.

I wish I could go back in time and tell myself those two things a year ago.

I would look for a good Philosophy program, and then narrow down your choices based on footbag if that's really what you want to do.

I can understand wanting to live near shredders, but be sure there's a good program as well. you wouldn't want to end up in a crappy philosophy program.

It's cool you're getting your bachelors in philosophy. I'm finishing up my philosophy minor this semester.

Yeah, I'm not going to pick a school entirely based on the footbag scene, but this is helping me check these areas out first and see if there is an acceptable school near one.

I'd check this site: http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/

It has rankings and useful info for philosophy majors.
