Post by slapdash21 » 10 Mar 2010 13:56

anyone else a card-carrying APA member? or at least any 8/9 ball enthusiasts?

i've been playing more pool than footbag lately (for the past year...) due to numerous injuries and i wound up joining the league, now i'm a skill level 4 and i co-captian teams in two different divisions. anyone else down with the APA?

well I am not with the APA but I have actualy been playing pool almost everyday now. I have hurt my knees and I am taking a break from playing footbag too hard. I am actually really thinking about joining a league or something.

you DEFINITELY should. it will open up a whole new world of pool strategy for you. i joined about a year ago and i've gotten better roughly 1,000,000 times faster than i was before, learning safeties, defense, diamond system, etc. it costs like 25 bucks to register and 9 bucks per match (between 2-7ish games) which seems like a lot, but its totally worth it (plus if your teams wins playoffs you can win up to a few hundred bucks and qualify for national tournaments), and you get can get discounts on everything from restaurants, hotel rooms, plane tickets, and all kinds of pool accesories. i'm going to the biggest pool convention in the world in a week in PA with my APA card in hand to grab a new stick and some other stuff.

here's a fun, fairly realistic pool game online: www.funkypool.com

they have 8, 9, killer, straight, UK 8, and golf. im pedrobolero on there.

My dad and I play best of 5 every night that I'm at home, but I've never played in a league.

Does the APA use 6 or 8 foot tables?

on random league nights you can use whatever the home table happens to be...like my home table is a bar table (6 ft), but when you get to big tournaments they typically use 8 footers (technically regulation)

Actually, the most reputable of pool tournaments uses the regulation table featured in this video:

swept a SL 4 (im a 4 as well, it was a race to 3 wins) monday night to clinch a 4-1 win on the night for our team.

Weird I missed this. But yeah, I'm an APA member. I only compete in 9 ball, and I still suck. I'm a 2. My team is teaching me though, so I could see myself making some slow progress. It's tough to improve though when you only play once a week.

One year later, and at least I can say I'm a three now. Slow progress, but progress nonetheless. This weekend my team goes to triannuals, which is like the City qualifier for Denver. If we win there, we then go to regionals, and if we win there we go to nationals in Vegas.

How do the skill level rankings work?

I used to play a lot of snooker, then I moved to Canada and I've been playing some more pool (snooker doesn't seem popular here). One thing that I do find a bit strange is how the bank shots seem to work on these tables. Have any of you guys played on a snooker table? One thing I can't quite seem to get my head around is the difference in the angle that's created with difference paces when attempting this shot, the table doesn't seem to react the same but I'm not entirely sure why. Do you know what could be causing this difference between these types of tables?

Skill level rankings go from 1-9 I believe, where 1 is somebody who's worse than a beginner, 3 is competent, 5 is very good, and 8s are ridiculous. To give some context, I once saw an 8 get two break and runs IN A ROW. They just don't miss.

In APA a new player plays his first match as a 4, and then depending on his subsequent wins and losses gets adjusted accordingly. As the saying goes, water finds its level.
