how to get tons of new footbag-videos
@millenniumtree
good idea! how's about that:
on the cd you receive, there's some thing written like "vid1_usr22", some kind of code. you go to the website, sign-in with this code and you get:
-the adresses of the next people to ship the cds
-the codes to write on those cds
the system would itself "know" that the person who signed in with this code got the video. it would even be possible to do a kind of "ranking", so the fastest "shippers" could get a better position in the tree, which means he would get faster the videos, and they would spread faster - because only the fastest are in the beginning...
those codes like "vid1_usr22" is just giving information about the user and the video-number, so it's easy to do. what dou you think? what program language are you using? i myself only use perl, but i'm a bit busy right now with an other website. but i could easily do the whole sign-in stuff, i think the biggest thing to do is creating a "logical" tree-distribution (logical means: people from europe shouldn have to ship to us, if possible ship to the same country (=cheaper), ...).
if you're still interested, write me in private or on my e-mail adress sam81@footbag.org. it'd be cool to get the first video as a christmas-present......

it shouldn't be a set tree. there should be a waiting list type deal and when you sign in saying you've gotten your video it gives you the first two names. that way if somebody doesn't send for some reason no one person gets screwed over, it just slows down everybody a little bit. i don't know if you guys were already thinking of it this way or not though =P

Maybe some kind of time limit would be a good idea - like once you recieve a video you have to send it on within a month or something like that. If you haven't sent if after than month you should not send it and the person who is meant to recieve the vid can get it from someone else.
This would mean that if you're away or your computer crashes or something and you can't copy the cd or even let anybody know that you can't do it, the next person will still recieve the video eventually.
In my expierence there is always somebody who breaks chain letters (usually me because I hate them) and even if people are signing up to something rather than just being sent it in the mail and suddenly told to send 10 postcards to people around the world I still think there will be breaks in the chain. I think it would suck if you didn't recieve the vids because the person above you didn't send them.
I also think it might be a good idea to have a person assigning who mails who - this would help make things faster because you could arrange it to have most people in each country sending the vids on to people in their own country.
Perhaps the first sendouts could go to each country and then the next ones can go to each part of the country. As you can imagine it would be much faster for me to send a vid to someone else in Australia than to someone in Canada.

Wait, if we're just burning files to CD and not sending working DVDs, then couldn't we just transfer the files over AIM or something similar?

That was discussed. That's what all the BitTorrent stuff was about. FTP, HTTP, BitTorrent, AIM, whatever works for you. Bittorrent is nice though because anyone who leaves the download open becomes a server of the file, thus speeding up other peoples' downloads. Plus, with BitTorrent, the site that hosts the tree can host the file as well, without being bogged down by everyone downloading from just the site. Also, with one source for the file, everyone gets the same file, not different copies that may be changed over time.
If one gets the vid by downloading, there would be an option on the site to specify that you already have the vid and to make you a server.
I wish I had more time to work on a project like this. If I wrote it, it would be in PHP/MySQL

Yeah. Great idea.
I really want a copy of UQAF (???) Jam and all the videos by Stefen Seigert(??) made -- sorry I forget details... Somebody helped me with an email address, I forget who (sorry again!!), so I emailed him and he never wrote back. Has anybody contacted creators?
On a side note, kind of related to Evan's post, somebody told me the other day how much they really like my VOTDS2 video. So I watched it and it is soooo much better in full quality. I actually started backing up copies of all my shred videos to my computer (NOT for sharing!!!). Just because I don't have a VCR working in my room anymore and I never get to watch my 25+ VHS shred tapes. It would be nice to have as high quality as possible is all I'm saying.
It's late, I'm not sure if that made sense.
