This year, I will be "managing" freestyle at the Green Cup, however mostly behind the scenes. The hope is that this year's version of freestyle at the GC will be much different than last year's version.
At the 2009 GC, I will really be pushing for interaction between the net players and freestylers, which means more careful coordination of the schedules for each discipline. Last year, there were so many freestyle events that there was too little time for shredding. This year, there will be fewer official freestyle events.
Also, I am organizing into the schedule 2 "cross-over events:"
1) An exhibition pro-am doubles match with two top net players and 2 high- level freestylers.
2) A novice singles net bracket for freestylers
Although the entry fee has yet to be determined, there will be a definite price-break for freestylers who wish to enter the novice singles net bracket. For example, if the entry fees were $30 just to shred and $40 dollars to compete, the reduced rate might be $25.
We will have a shred room on both Saturday and Sunday from between 10AM and 6PM. I hope to reserve at least 3 hours each day when no freestyle events are planned-just shred time. The caveat is that the 2 cross-over events will likely have to be played during some of that time- hence the price break for participators.
The novice bracket, depending on the number of competitors, will likely take 2-3 hours. Initial rounds will be played on either Saturday or Sunday, with the final rounds to be played on Championship Monday mid-to-late morning.
As always, the Green Cup is NOT a prize money event for Net players or for Freestylers. However, this year we will be spending several hundred dollars to have some very nice medals produced for our event, which will be given away for top-3 finishers in each discipline. Again, these medals will be of the highest quality and very unique. All registered players will get a FREE beer mug with the Chaos logo as well.
We (the organizers) will make a good-faith effort to actually showcase the freestyle finals. One of the ways we plan to bring net players to the freestyle finals site is by moving and serving kegs of beer there. Net players typically follow a trail of beer.
Lastly, I am really pushing for a sweet evening players party at a Chaos member's house where freestylers and net players will openly mix, hang out, and party-maybe even shred. There is a good chance we'll have a death metal band performing, lots of Lagunitas beer for drinking, and other miscellany.
I hope you'll consider attending this year's Green Cup, as it will be MUCH different than last year's event!
