World's 2020
Do we know where World's is going to be yet?

Not yet
No announcement from IFPA yet. Word on the street is there are 2 front runners: Medellin Colombia, and Detroit Michigan. If I see anything announced on Facebook I'll share it here.
Re: Not yet
Thanks, Ken. It is much appreciated. It would be sweet to see it in the D. I would be there for sure.

Facebook/IFPA tuned in people
If anybody has any updates on Worlds 2020 location/bids, it'd be much appreciated. I worry that kind of thing will be announced on Facebook and nowhere else, and I don't want to miss the boat.
Re: Facebook/IFPA tuned in people
Likewise! I have been checking .org too, but still nothing. Surely it will be announced somewhere that won't disappear immediately...no?

Re: World's 2020
So nothing yet eh? I heard that Wiktor was saying it was all but confirmed to be held in Colombia...but still no official call. That being said, I am not on social media so it may have already been announced there and not come this far yet...At either rate, club funding is officially open so hopefully we hear soon so I can see about applying for some!

Wiktor posted this on his wall on Facebook recently:
Important news to #Footbag World! As IFPA Executive Director with the International Team at Worlds Operating Committee, I'd like to inform you about the current status of the 2020 IFPA World Footbag Championships. A dedicated team (http://www.footbag.org/groups/home/168) is constantly working with the City of #Medellin to run our tournament in Colombia! It's still not decided but the whole requested proposal has been placed. We are waiting for formal reply from the city's Sports Events Department called #INDER (https://www.inder.gov.co/) Stay tuned for updates. Knights of Columbia?
Whoosh indeed. I was trying to find any updates on this, and found that Wiktor posted something on FB. Here is the text copied and pasted:
"Update! International Footbag Players' Association and Footbag Medellin are constantly working with INDER Alcaldía de Medellín to host the #2020 World Footbag Championships in #Colombia! The main event site has been secured at amazing Coliseo Iván de Bedout. We are discussing the details with the city of #medllin. We can't still confirm it 100% due to the global problem with #coronavirus, we still can't officially announce the tournament, but you can start slowly to plan your trip. More information coming soon! #footbag #footbagmedellin Freestyle Footbaggers Footbag Net Players"
So that looks promising, although interesting at the same time with COVID-19 and all. He mentions "slowly" planning our trip...with the current state of travel etc., is that code for "hey, worlds is on, it is in Columbia"? I assume Wiktor posted this with his Director's hat on, meaning that he has to take into account the possibility that we may not be able to travel due to COVID-19? Does "slowly" plan your trip mean get tickets now? Who knows!

Covid uncertainty
Interesting on Detroit withdrawing their bid. Honestly, I can't blame any group (IFPA, host cities, footbag clubs, etc.) from shying away from hosting Worlds this year, since the Coronavirus has created so much uncertainty. There's so much that's impossible to predict and consequently plan for at this stage.
Here's just a few examples:
If the State Department places restrictions on travel, would players even be able to go? If not, are their flights refundable (this might be the one time it makes sense to buy traveler's insurance)?
Related to the previous bullet, let's assume there are no restrictions on traveling to Colombia (e.g. the US says its fine for Americans to go to Colombia). Since there are no direct flights from Denver to Medellin, I'd have to be very careful about where my layover takes place. If the layover is within the US (e.g. Miami, Houston) then I'm probably fine. But if my layover is in Panama or Mexico, I might have to worry about travel restrictions there.
I wonder if there's any discussion/consideration about postponing this year's Worlds until the fall, or even just skipping this year.

Re: Covid uncertainty
It's less than a week since I posted this, yet I feel its 10x more relevant now. I don't think anybody would blame Colombia or IFPA if we just skipped Worlds this year. Crazy times (I'm literally writing this from the room where I have self-quarantined for 3 days, since I was in a meeting last week with somebody who may be Covid 19 positive).
Re: World's 2020
Wow, crazy times indeed. NZ has 8 confirmed cases and restrictions are tightening.
I wouldn't blame them at all if they cancelled. Would this be the first time a World's has been cancelled? I wonder what would happen...would the organizing committee still seek to run it in Columbia? I assume it would be easier to keep it there instead of finding a new location.
Not fun to hear you are self-isolating, Ken. Crazy stuff.

Re: World's 2020
nothing will move or be decided in the coming weeks or even 1-2 months at the rate this is going, sad times.

Re: World's 2020
The way things are going now, I've shifted away from "nobody could blame IFPA/Medellin for canceling" all the way to: "IFPA/Medellin SHOULD cancel." I just can't imagine any argument for there being benefits that outweigh the risks at this point.
