Dear Mz Meier,
My friend Nora tells me you'd be interested in planning a freestyle
footbag demonstration for your Junior / Senior gym classes. First of
all, I'd like to say that I'm very excited about this prospect, and
I'm glad to have your interest. I've done freestyle demonstrations at
Pittsford-Mendon HS and School Without Walls. The summer before this
previous one, I taught a class for the City of Rome, NY Summer Rec
Program. All were big successes in getting students interested in a
healthy, fun, athletic group activity that encourages teamwork, self
improvement, creativity, and perseverance. I've been very fortunate
to be able to share something I love so much with a group of
enthusiastic young people.
The format that I used for the P-M demonstrations is the one that I
feel will probably fit your school best. For each gym class, I begin
with a brief talk about the facts and benefits of footbag as a sport,
and how it has positively affected my own life. The talk is followed
by a brief (5 minutes) professional video clip of some of the top
players in the game from all over the world. Then, I move on to the
Demo section, in which I show the students some of my own freestyle
footbag skills, and talk more about the game in general. I like to
combine my demonstrations with Q&A to keep students interested and
encourage involvement. Then, after the demo, students are encouraged
to join me for the remainder of the gym class for a casual kicking
circle, where I can answer their questions personally, demonstrate
specific tricks and concepts, and generally get the ball rolling on
their own involvement with the sport.
For a day of gym class demonstrations, I charge a $200 presenter's
fee. All that I require of the school is access to a TV and DVD
player for my video clip.
If it's decided that your school would like to pursue an after-school
freestyle footbag organization for your students, I'd be more than
willing to help organize it and participate. I've got information on
how to get inexpensive footbags and the proper shoes, the only two
pieces of equipment an aspiring freestyler would need to buy.
If you're interested in discussing any of the details, or you have
questions or concerns, I can be reached at (matthewcross[AT]gmail.com).
I'm free most of the time to get together and talk, as long as I've
got a few days notice to make sure I don't work that day. Thanks
again for your interest. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Matt Cross
