I've pretty much come to the conclusion that "this isn't the real thing", but I'm still curious as to the outcome.

I'd say the most likely possibilities are: university student's experiment, or release of infinium labs Phantom Console.

So it was all a test to see what people would do encountering an erie website with a countdown timer clicking down for 6 months. Pretty interesting that most people connected it with terrorism. Which was stupid because no terrorist organization would put up a site like that to launch an attack. Shows that people don't really think most things through.
