I've used a number of devices.

The most obvious is a personal music device like headphones and an mp3 player, but i find even those to be quite cumbersome.

With alot of success i can say I've used a boom box with batteries (has alot of power and can produce some great sound) Downside is it's heavy ...

I'm not sure if your joking about Prince or not, but it was awesome. I saw him in a huge open air venue with around 40 000 people so the energy of the crowd was intense. He played for like 2 1/2 hours so by the end of it i was sleeping in my tent listening to prince lull me to sleep haha.
