lol

It's not an age thing - it's just that I am sceptical about her maturity but I'll keep an open mind - I just don't want to rush into things with a little girl. It was especially notable today when somebody asked "Hey are you going to call that girl" and I was like "no she's probably at school"... Anyway more randomness the hobart footbag club blog :)

So I had a fucking awesome session today. I was feeling very angry and frustrated on the way there - basically because of footbag stuff but I'm not going to comment about that on this forum anymore. It's kind of annoying that I basically said that in the topic and somebody had to attack me anyway because I'm not going to respond - but I'd like to...

I played with Glenn at the PCYC - we had some good angry punk music playing too. I basically just went has hard as I fucking could. I was hitting as many fives as I could, lots of 6s and mainly genuine stuff. Here are the highlights

whirlygig bsos almost every run I tried - and not bsos as in first and last move but completely midstring. Spikehammer>phoenix>whirlygig to start a run (with some other big moves later). Spikehammer>fusion and spikehammer>plasma. Ripwalk>ripwalk>rippedwarrior>ripwalk>ripwalk>ripped warrior>blurry whirl>blurry whirl>ps whirl>ps whirl> run.

I hit the blurry whirl>blurry whirl>ps whirl>ps whirl combo all the time in so many runs. I was also hitting mobius, scorps tail bsos, double spinning osis, whirlwind. All kinds of stuff like that midstring.

Basically I think I proved to myself that I am as good at footbag as other people seem to think I am. I hit my shred 30 plus a couple of extra moves at the end completely dropless. The shred 30 scores 224 I think (for 30 or 31 moves) and I hit another 3 or 4 afterwards so I don't know how it goes to the time but I defintily broke my record.

I harldy bopped at all so it was a pretty intense 2 hour kick. I don't know if I'll be able to play that well again in a long time but we'll see. I think of footbag progress as like a slow upwards graph of skill over time but if you look at each session on the graph it goes up and down a lot - just hopefully a slowly improving trend. Well today was definitly a super high spike so I don't think I could sustain that level - probably I won't even try to go as big most of the time anyway. Going big is fun but so is hitting long chilled runs and all kinds of things. Footbag is just generally fun I guess.

All in all, I kicked some serious footbag today :)

So I spoke to the guy about 5 minutes ago.

It's basically like my footbag dream has come true and I think it will be pretty damn hard to wipe the smile off my face today :) We're basically talking a major national campaign with Nestle's biggest brand in Australia - as well as probably some on going support for the sport too.

Basically I am the kid who found the cookie jar.

yeah I'm still amazingly stoked on the Nestle thing. I've been thinking of all the really cool things that they could do with footbag. Not that any of them are very likely - it kind of sounds like they pretty much have it all planned but I have some cool ideas anyway - maybe I can suggest them and they'll use them for the next campaign in a year or something :P

The coolest idea I had was to have like collector cards with the free footbag - they could be of Australian players hitting particular tricks and maybe with some tips or something. But I thought it would be cool to only have hard tricks - obviously stuff that people couldn't just read the tips and then go out with their free bag and hit. In particular I was thinking Ripped Warrior but more on that later :P. Basically people would see this really impressive hard trick and they'd have to go on the net and learn the basics - get involved with the sport etc. so that they could learn to hit this trick on the card - in fact they'd actually have to get pretty good to hit it.

Of course I can see strong arguements for putting stuff on the cards that are easy too.

Not that there is any reason to expect cards - I just thought it would be cool and I always wanted to be on an Australian Rules Football card so this would basically be my childhood dream succeed (different sport but still cool).

So I had a session with Glenn at the PCYC today - which was good. It's so cool to have a training partner - even if we do different things. It really gives me the motivation to play! I spent the session just drilling stuff - not going for any hard combos or anything like that.

I drilled ripped warriors and stepping ducking lots. I'm really getting into it and I'd say ripped warrior is probably my favourite move right now. Also drilled ducking, whirls, spinning, and torque. not very much I guess. I hit runs now and then too. Oh yeah I drilled pdx flails a bit - very cool move and something I'm starting to put into runs fairly often.

I also hit symposium mirage while looking at Glenn juggle (rather than at my feet). I was very surprised I hit it to be honest but stoked none the less. It was my first ever attempt doing that move while not looking so I think I'll never try again and keep my 100% record :)

Glenn hit a really cool juggling trick and got it down pretty solidish. Apparantly some good juggling person said it was impossible but clearly not. He's juggling 5 clubs and throws one to a squeeze position. So he's now juggling 4 clubs while standing on one foot with the 5th club squeezed. He then throws a club to the other foot squeeze position and while that's in the air grabs the squeezed club and changes feet. Then repeat back and forth. It looks really fucking cool anyway - not sure what else to say. Hope I explained it right. I think he also broke his record for 6 club juggling - which is cool too.

yo jeremy, I was thinking today, and thought something conserning judging. If the "artistic interpretation" catigory's name was simply changed to "overall impression", than all of the scores would be consistant. Overall impression is more relavant than AI to me anyway... Just a thought. That seems to be the way the judges score anyways so why not call it what it is??? right... thoughts... flames....

I don't really self serve any more. Only because I want to challenge myself to hit a good run first time in circles - no ethical or moral reasons.

But yeah that's an interesting idea. I think though, it's better to use the systems that other freestyle type sports use.

Technical and artistic work well for me - I just think the problem is that there isn't enough examples of what those words mean. This is basically my interpretation:

Technical.
Technical merit is how skilled you are as a footbagger - it's about your variety of moves, the difficulty of moves and how well executed those moves are. More variety shows a broarder range of skills. More difficulty obviously shows higher technical skill as does the execution of those moves. I would include both sidedness as part of variety. So for example you look at Honza's routine from worlds where he only hits 1 genuine toe move ending on his left foot and no genuine moves off his left foot and I still think he should get a good score because he still hits a good range of variety - one component missing isn't a big deal. I also think you only really need to hit a component once to show that you can do it. So if a person only hits one or two spinning moves - I think that's enough to show the judges that the person can hit that technical component. Hitting a long spinning run shows technical merit in the difficulty of the moves and the links - as well as artistic merit if it's done well to the music (like Vasek's spinning run) but doesn't really show any better variety.

Artistic.
Artistic is really about the performance of the routine. The important things are how the routine looks to the music. Playing on the beat is the first part of this. Then you have playing with a style that suits the music. For example I didn't think Peter Irish's routine suited the music too well - especially the very first moves. Then there is doing moves with particular parts of the music - ie. Tina's last combo. This shows that the player really knows the music well and aren't just playing to the music but are playing with the music - I hope that makes sense. And with that is sections based on parts of the music - ie. Vasek's spinning music. How the player performs is also important - things like looking at the crowd, dramatic gestures etc - if they work well as a performance are also part of artistic. Hitting unusal or different moves - like sole stalls, squeezes, cloud kicks and flyers definitly has nothing to do with artistic merit. What a move is is clearly a technical thing. If those moves are hit with the music - ie. flyers on a particular note or whatever - that's artistic but it's just as artistic as hitting a reverse whirl with the music. It depends on how good the move looks as a performance - not what the move is. I think it's entirely possible to do a completely guiltless 2 minute routine with a high level of artistic merit.

Regarding scores - these are about what I'd expect.

Technical:

0-1
Very little technical ability - no technical moves and a very high amount of drops.

1-2
Either a very very easy routine - mainly kicking and toe stalling or a small amount of technical difficulty - but probably only tiltless links, maybe the odd three or four and with a great deal of drops. I would not expect any open competitors in the finals at worlds to score with in this range.

2-3
This is the scores I'd expect from players who are borderline open/intermediate. There are some hard moves and mild links - maybe the odd tripless combo - like ripwalk>ripwalk but nothing amazing - probably over 6 drops.

3-4
This is an average routine. Some hard moves and links Probably some range of variety and at least one technically difficult move (5 add level - although not neccessarily a 5 add). Probably about 3- 6 drops.

4-5
A strong routine with good technical skill and variety. Some impressive moves or links and longish technically skilled runs (ie. over 5 genuine contacts). Less than 5 drops.

5-6
An excellent routine. Strong technical links and skill - mainly guiltless level (I should say by guiltless level I mean that kind of difficulty - the actual add ratings are insignificant). I would definitly expect some fairly difficult technical moves and links - i'm talking 5>5 type level or 6+ add moves. Also a very wide range of variety and some solid combinations. 3 drops or less.

Artistic

0-1
Basically the player does not look like they're routine has any relation to the music playing - not in time at all, no choreography, a lot of drops.

1-2
Most likely player has chosen music they like playing to but has not choreographed anything. Might be sometimes in time with music. Also a lot of drops.

2-3
Plays in time with music but only very basic choreography. Mostly just looks like making the moves up on the spot. 7+ drops

3-4
Plays in time with music, some choreography present - stuff like pausing with the music. Waving hands at crowd - probably has the odd move at particular parts to the music. 4-6 drops.

4-5
Good choreography and timing. Clearly has some sections choroegraphed well with the music. Has an ok stage presence and appears to play well with the music. 3 drops

5-6
Excellent - almost entire routine choreographed to the music - strong stage presence and timing. Style perfectly matches music. Less than 3 drops.

All these are approximates. So it's possible for results to differ - especially on the drops but that's about the standard I'd expect for each rating. I think the system should be such that it doesn't matter what the level of the other competitors is. For example if Toni Paakonen is going to get a score of 1.3 for artistic merit at worlds - the very same routine should score 1.3 at the Turku Footbag Championships or any other event.

Of course this means that at worlds in the finals you'd expect 10 scores all around the same mark - which is why you give decimal points. There's still a lot of range between a score of 5.0 and a score of 5.9.

Anyway those are my basic thoughts on the current judging system :P

So I rang up James today after that post and we had a shred in the mall. Lots of fun - we both played well. James hit 3 unique tiltless for the first time and did it twice. atw>pixie>clipper then atw>pixie>pickup! He's definitly got some talent.

Tomorrow I'm going round his school to play too I think :)

lol Henry. By the time I came online you'd already commented about the misunderstanding and you sent me a message before I read the topic. I hate that topic - I only read it because you commented on it in your message.

The misunderstanding is that you think I was offended by something I didn't even read :P

I have to say I'm a big fan of my blog. Well the hobart footbag club blog to be accurate. I love the way the topic is always about more than footbag and there are so many funny and strange posts in it. I think it has a fantastic atmosphere. I love it :)

So today's news :)

I played with Glenn at the pcyc - just drilling. Things went ok. I mainly worked on flip pixies and spinning. In particular flip spinning. I really find flip spinning frustrating. Today I found it much easier to spin on that side out of osis than out of a clipper. I guess because spininning out of osis is just a matter of going backwards over what you've just done. I still except the fact that I'm a freak :P

Then I went and shredded it up at Elizabeth College with Brian and James. It was heaps of fun. I was mainly just hitting long runs with not too many hard moves but I still had a fantastic time :) EC is very cool. We did get kicked out of one spot by a janitor who said "no balls sports allowed here" - we were in a student common room. Nobody else was in the room and we were in a big open space. I wanted to have a go at the guy but since I was basically trespassing on the school property I decided it was best to not make a big deal out of it. In my old days at school I would have definitly taken it up - probably all the way to the principle if I didn't get my way. It's common sense - freestyle footbag is not a "ball sport" and it doesn't hurt anybody.

I met the girl I mentioned earlier I think and had a brief chat but I was more interested in playing footbag  . I would have liked to have a chat with her later but she had class.

lol anyway.

I bought 3 new cds and a book today too.

The book is Ubik by Phillip K Dick - should be cool. He's one of my favourite authors.

The CDs were:

Verve Remixed - very very cool!! - cool in the original chilled slang sense of the word
Moscow :TheSexTheCityTheMusic - which is some club music from Moscow. I've only listened to the first track and it sounded cool. Also I like listening to music from around the world
Bird and Diz - Recording of the very last recording session with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Also has Thelonius Monk playing. Fucking awesome!

Looking forward to shredding tomorrow. I'm so proud of the Hobart Footbag Club. It's only 4 months old and already has 8 active members. Definitly going to be a big force in footbag in Australia. It's like my baby :)

maybe but probably doubtful I'd have to say.

So I had a good session today. We had Me, Alex, Brian, Kester and James. Some cool stuff was hit all round. We also had a large number of groupies - ie. people who came just to watch us and listen to the music.

We had Glenn's PA so we had loud music which was cool. We played it so loud that the Christian preachers couldn't be heard.

Later it rained and James, Brian and I went and played at the mall.

Some cute girls played with us.

Right when we were leaving a girl passed out right next to us twice. Some teenage girls looked after her but I really feel bad now that I didn't do anything. They let her walk away I think. In my opinion she'd clearly overdosed on a hard drug and I should have at the very least called an ambulance. Probably it's been dealt with but I really feel bad about not doing anything and not showing any leadership. Anyway I won't make that mistake again.
