Yes!
Thanks to Mathieu Gauthier, my first round routine from Worlds 05 is online!
Finally!
http://www.footbag.org/media/728/KenWorlds.mpg
Probably my best Sick 3 combo ever (which I hit again in a demo for JFC3), and my best routine ever. Conveniently housed in a single video. Hell yes! This totally makes my day.
Merci Mathieu!

I leave the house in less than 9 hours to go to Australia. I should get to bed, but I`m too filled with nervous energy.
I had packed all my stuff a couple days ago, and planned on not playing til getting to Aussie, but the weather was absolutely perfect today, and I couldn`t resist a session in Yoyogi with Hatsu and X+Y. It may be my last chance to play outside in perfect weather in Yoyogi. What a sad thought.
Luckily, it turned out to be a great session, which is an excellent note to leave on.
Hatsu had an OK session. He seemed a bit distracted, or frustrated, so maybe he didn`t feel like he had a great session. It definitely got better towards the end. Upon my request he hit legbeater to gyro butterfly, and then later hit it flipside. He also hit ripwalk to gyro butterfly (with a plant).
I had a good session. I planned on playing lightly, and for the most part did. Still, I surprised myself with a few things. My flip pixies were feeling real good all day. Combos like parkwalk-blur-pixie butterfly-blur repeat, as well as midstring flip parkwalks were feeling solid. Since it felt so good, I decided to try flip sailing on a whim, and BAM!
Flipside dasein! Had the presence of mind to seal with a bunch of BOPs, which enabled me to get my energy back so I could bsos it! Dasein bsos! Whoot!
Later, I also managed to hit flip pixie tap for my first time, and also sealed it by bsosing it. Score. Pdx drifter-dyno repeat, pretty easily. vortex-duck clip-pdx drifter-duck clip -duck clip-gyro clip felt styly. Hit blurry drifter to ripwalk bsos. I think my favorite combo of the day was pdx drifter-stepping mirage-legbeater repeat. I wasn`t planning on making it a drill, but when I was at the 4th contact, I figured I`d go for it, and did!
X+Y stole the show though. He played probably better than I`ve ever seen him play. Rubberman! Blurry drifter to ripwalk! Predator! Flip predator!
Drifter x3. Solid shuffle combos all day. Legbeater-sumo-legbeater. He actually completed the drill once, but was off balance on the last sumo so he the`d it. Super solid.
Perfect weather throughout too. Cool enough that I hardly sweated, but light out throughout, and warm enough that my body felt warm throughout.
With this good session under my belt, I feel ready for Aussie!

Just in case your still awake and havent left for the airport yet, the weather in Sydney is forcast to be low to mid 20's (Celsius obviously) cloudy, patchy showers, for the next week - how's that for considerate, not only is Ken brinning his footbag skills to the land of OZ he's possibly going to bring enough rain to break the longest aussie drought in living memory.

Made it to Australia safely!
I'll try and blog this more extensively later, but the clif notes for now;
- Met Jeremy O'Wheelj and Dyalan. They seem real laid back and cool, which is a nice relief. Meeting people in real life, you never know what to expect, but I think we all hit it off real well today.
-I'm going nuts pigging out on snack foods I cant get in Japan. There's a whole universe of tim tams which I have never seen, and I'm having fun sampling them all. I also had 3 different australian beers so far, which have all been good. And of course, bundaberg ginger beer. Good stuff.
-Had a good shred at the University today. I have now officially shredded on 4 continents (North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia).
-Jeremy has a real crisp, clean style. He can move his legs amazingly fast. Several of his moves i had trouble seeing what he was doing cause he's so quick. I was impressed by how consistent and easy his flip pixies are, things like smoke bsos is nothing to him. Pretty consistent too. Beta fog impressed me, considering it wasn't butt-cheeky at all. symp whirling pdx mirage was cool too. 9 smogs real clean and easily.
-Dyalan impressed me with his remarkably both sided sets. Pixies and steps both sides. He threw a beautiful sumo in midstring effortlessly, which surprised everybody, himself included
-I only slept about 4 hours on my flight, but my excitement and adrenaline carried me through real well. I ended up playing surprisingly well, which I was happy about. I hit alpine legbeater to pdx torque, for my second time ever. I also hit some HPDs which Jeremy and I thought were clean, but I'd like to check on video. I think I'm just paranoid. I hit bs bed which felt cool. Oh yeah, I also hit pdx drifter to haze for my first time, which felt great.
Footed frenzy bsos, and hit it both sides.
Overall it was just a real good vibe throughout. We all played rather well, and I remember laughing a ton just joking around and quoting the Simpsons. Good crew for sure. One funny moment happened due to me mentally still thinking I was in Japan. In Japan I feel free to speak my mind very freely in English, since I'm confident nobody will understand what I'm saying. Unfortunately, everybody in Australia speaks English (albeit with silly accents). So when a real cute university student walked by, I said in a regular-volume; "wow, that girl is really cute." And she looked directly at me.
In retrospect it was funny, and Dyalan and J laughed heartily at the situation, and I soon joined them.
Hopefully it made her day...
Australians like to drink lots of beer. I hope I survive this trip.
I'm gonna sleep like a baby tonight.

Holy shit!
I was gonna write an entry about my first day in Australia, but in an incredible coincidence, Guido apparently had the exact same day as I did!!!
I think he described his/my day better than I could, so there's no point in writing about it, considering it would likely look exactly the same as Guido's entry.
My second day in Australia was even better than my first! How great is that? I slept incredibly well last night, as expected. I spent a day in transit, slept 4 hours on the plane, spoke English all day after 4 weeks of not speaking with native English-speaker, shredded, drank a ton of beer, and was just completely overloaded stimulus-wise.
The weather called for rain yesterday and today, and in both cases the forecast was wrong.
Before heading out for the shred, Guido asked me if i wanted to try out his G-Units. He had already modded them, but he hates them, and wasn't planning on ever using them again. Since they were in my size, I wore them to the session figuring I'd mess around in them for a bit, then switch to my lavers when I got serious about playing. As it turned out, I ended up playing all day (2 different session) in them!
They feel a lot like lavers, but with better ankle support, and more forgiving clippers. Like, you gain ankle crank with them... several times I hit osis or clipper moves when I probably would have dropped in lavers.
If anybody asks me what the "G" in "G-Unit" stands for, I'm telling them it stands for "Guido."
The first session of the day went down in North Sydney. 5 of us showed, which apparently is a huge circle by Sydney standards. Guido, Jeremy, Dyalan, Philip and myself. The circle just had a really good vibe, and we all played very well i thought. For the first 20 minutes or so, I was adjusting to the G-Units, and whenever I hit a big trick, I'd kinda feel like I had hit it for the first time. But after the first 20 minutes or so, I felt like I was playing normally, I wasn't even really conscious that I was playing in non-lavers for my first time ever.
Guido really impressed me. He had told me before that he had only been playing for a year, so it came as a big surprise to see him playing guiltlessly, ducking both pixies, and hitting his first triple dex ever:smog. Very good consistency too, I can see him progressing extremely quickly. Phil played well I thought, mostly playing tiltless, but randomly throwing in nice atom smashers out of nowhere. Dyalan played OK at the first session, but his best stuff came at the second session I thought. Jeremy played hard. Stepping reaper. Symp mirage while staring at me. He also hit pdx drifter to haze, first try!
Cheeky bastard.
I think most of his good stuff came in the second session.
I felt like I played extremely well. The new shoes didn't slow me down at all either. We played with an O'Wheel bag for most of the session, and I heartily endorse them as excellent. Small, heavy, but they sit well. I hit a bunch of tricks I wouldn't expect to hit in new (non laver) shoes, like ducking torque, HPD, dragon set dlo, swifter, sonic clipper, stepping reaper, blurry grifter, flailing eclipse etc. Ja ja ja ja ja ja jeeeee-you-nit!
At one point in the session, a bunch of young skateboarders came to watch us. After watching us for a bit, one of them complimented me by coming up to me and asking; "are you like, sponsored?"
I paused a moment, grinned real wide (
) and responded with great satisfaction; "Actually yeah, I am."
That's gotta be on of the greatest moment of my footbag career.
I haven't been asked that question many times in my life, and to be asked that during one of the 2 periods when I was sponsored... just straight up perfect timing. It was beautiful.
Another funny moment came when Jeremy was talking about the book "American Psycho," and how when it was being turned into a movie, the director received death threats, because the book was so graphic, people feared what the movie would be like.
Jeremy: "Apparently the director even received death threats."
Guido: "By Christians?"
Jeremy: "Nah, by normal people."
Me:
I nearly did a spit take with my soda. Speaking of which; raspberry fanta is awesome! I predict my teeth with fall out before my liver fails on this trip. I ate a pack of tim-tams yesterday, and today I ate another pack. I'm a pack-a-day tim tam addict. I bought tim-tam ice cream today too... I think i have a problem.
Towards the end of the first session, Jeremy gave several attempts at Big Apple:
Guido, to Jeremy: "Have you hit that before, Jeremy?"
Me: "Yeah, I hit that before Jeremy."
I"m such an ass.
We grabbed some lunch, then had a second session down by the Opera House. Frankly, I didn't expect to be that impressed by the Opera House, but it really was stunning. We had a session right by it, which meant we got some big crowds watching us. I kinda viewed it as good practice for the upcoming demos, in that it really encouraged us to go long. Guido was pretty tired, and Phil got injured real quick, so the second session was mostly just Jeremy, Dyalan and me. Dyalan hit ripwalk x2, as well as datw-paradon-barrage, which I thought was sweet. Jeremy hit a run of like 15 unique toe guiltless, which I was very impressed by.
Dyalan left a bit early, and the crowds thinned, so we closed out the session just messing around. I also hit dasein bsos in front of Jeremy, which I was stoked about, considering Jeremy is like Mr. Sailing set.
We decided to have a contest to see who could link the most triple dexes in a row, but by then we were both exhausted. I still managed to hit ewalk-fog-smog-pig. I still can't believe today was my first time playing in G-Units. The transition was so easy. I may make the switch permanent, since the Gs look sturdier, and my current lavers are getting pretty worn down. And although it shouldn't affect my decision, the G-Units also look waaaaay cooler than lavers. They are black with red trim, which go with my shorts better than the lavers. which are just kinda ugly and grey now. It'd be kinda funny if it turns out that I brought my lavers all the way to Australia, and only ended up playing one session in them.
I should go shower and get to sleep, cause there's a demo tomorrow. But so far, these two days have been just incredible fun. I really didn't expect to have things go this well... everybody has been incredibly nice to me, everybody is supercool, I discovered the joy of G, tim tam ice cream, and I have been playing at the top of my game too!
Life. Is. Good.

I can answer you're questions
Tim Tams are possibly the best biscuit of ever
it's chocolate on the inside, with more chocolate on the outside. And they taste awesome
Phil is a shredder from Sydney, he runs the ausfootbag site, not Phil from NZ

Exhausted...
Some quick observations:
-Australians drink ridiculous amounts of beer. Around the clock. With meals. Between meals. In lieu of meals.
Me: "I need to use the bathroom" (because of beer)
Any Aussie footbagger: "Hmm... if we go into a pub and order another round of beer, I'm sure they'll let you use the bathroom."
-D-Boy is on point: tim-tams are delicious chocolate cookies, and Phil is a Sydney shredder, not Phil Morrison.
-I suck at team freestyle. I need to get better before Sunday, when I perform in front of 9,999 people, plus David Hasselhoff.
-Jeremy likes to Windsor me.
- I like to fart on his face when he sleeps.
-I hope Jeremy doesn't read this entry.
-Its possible that I "the" less tricks than I think I do. I think I'm just kinda paranoid in general about "the," or maybe the Aussies just can't tell when I "the" tricks.
-I've picked up a bunch of good rules for 4square, which I hope to teach the Japanese when I get home.
-There are no rules in cricket. All the Australian shredders have just developed a highly sophisticated code-language for use around me, whenever they want to talk shit on my game. I'm working on deciphering the meaning, but its challenging. I'm pretty sure that; "He's not a true bowler, he's a chucker!"= "Ken doesn't use his flip pixie. He's a nub"
Actual blog entry tomorrow... I hope. Night all.

No worries, I am still alive. My sense of time is warped though, as it seems that every day is 3 crammed into one. Sort of like a 30 minute TV adaptation of a Russian novel.
Its likely hopeless to try and chronicle all the backlog of this trip til this point, but what harm could come of trying?
Over the weekend, Guido, Jeremy and myself went to help Dyalan do a small demo in North Sydney. It was a run-for-cancer kind of deal, so not many kids about. There I had my first drink of Milo (chocolate milk), the product that is sponsoring my trip to Aussie. Pretty good. Feels nice to be sponsored by a beverage that I can actually drink (I'm caffeine-sensitive, so Pepsi twist was never something I could drink much of).
The demo proved exhausting, mostly due to one hyperactive 3 year old. He wasn't great at kicking the bag consecutively, so we told him the objective of the footbag was to kick the bag as hard as he could at Dyalan (whom he dubbed "tall-man"
) or me. When he mastered that game, we told him to try and hit the people who worked the Milo stand, and we gave him a prize when he pegged one of them real hard. Soon enough, we changed the game to just running around with a soccer ball, which he modified to "let's tackle Ken." I was OK with this game, until he upped the ante, making the game: "let's-tackle-Ken, then-wail-on-him-while-he's down."
As Dyalan later commented: "Oh the humanity!"
After the demo we went into the city to have lunch. All I had had for breakfast was a meat pie, which apparently everybody eats here, but made me kinda ill. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was good, but even as you enjoy it, you also feel ill. The closest sensation I could compare it to would be eating poutine.
Anyway, we went to a pub and partook of an even more traditional Australian lunch: 2 pitchers of beer. My facial reaction followed this path:
->
->
(asian flush) ->
Well buzzed from lunch, we set up a game of foursquare right outside a supermarket, and had a few really fun games. There were only 4 of us, but it still went well. We definitely drew lots of funny looks, especially when the "make an animal noise after each kick" rule was in effect.
My favorite rule was probably the "complete a full spin after you pass the bag off" rule. That + beer almost did me in. The other real good rule was the "touch the ground with your hand after each pass" rule. Good times.
After 4 square, Dyalan, Jeremy and myself did a little shred. It was rather cool out, so I never felt like I warmed up, but it was fun nonetheless. I can't recall too much from this session... I sort of feel like all my shreds are blurring into one. I recall missing flip fog, and Jeremy starting his next string with fog.
Me: "It doesn't count as windsoring unless you hit flip fog as well." (since I missed flip fog, and not strong)
Jeremy: *BSOSes fog midstring*
Me:
The next day Jeremy and I practiced our doubles routine for the first time. I learned to do crabwalks and all that 4-legged monster stuff. I'm still not as proficient at it as I'd like, but we have time to practice. We're doing lots of synchro in the routine as well, which works because we have very similar styles. I'm excited because we are doing some 2 bag juggling too, which will mark my first time ever doing 2 bag juggling in a routine.
After working on doubles, we watched "The Life Aquatic" which I enjoyed. When Guido came home, I half-jokingly suggested another shred, and Jeremy took me up on it.
We played in Guido's garage. The whole feel of the place really reminded me of the 97 worlds videos, when they had that huge session in the carpark. Surprisingly, Jeremy and I had a real good 2 man session. I can't recall too much of it, but there was a real good vibe, and I felt like a lot of props were given. We played to Stevie Wonder music from Dyalan's car. I hit reverse swirl to superfly to start a string, which felt stylish, and everybody said was clean. My best string of the day was easily 30+, and started with dominatrix, then had lots of genuine links. Hit a nice toe-gdlo again. Jeremy started a string with something like pdx drifter-ripwalk-pdx drifter-blur. The most impressive trick of the whole session was easily symposium blender. Jeremy threw it out of nowhere, and I just laughed a lot and gave him a ton of props. I had never seen that trick before, and it blew my mind.
After the shred I got a quick chess game against Jeremy (whose openings have improved since my chess lesson), then we dropped him off at the airport. That was on Monday night, but he comes back on Friday morning, so it hardly feels like he's gone.
So far the trip has been absolutely wonderful. Everybody is super nice to me, I'm playing in cool new shoes (Guido-Units), I'm eating well (except all the Tim-Tams), and I'm doing a ton of fun things which I can't do in Japan. Yesterday for example, I played trivia on Dyalan's team at University. I suggested our team name, and we used it: "Paul Hogan's Heroes."
We took 3rd place, and scored free beers for our troubles. Yesterday I also played Scrabble with Dyalan, which kicked ass. At the end of the game, he had used all his tiles, and I only had one remaining (an "L," so I only ate 1 point). I was impressed with some of the words we played too. I played "uvula" and "vicar." It's also been something of a treat just being able to speak English again. My last couple months in Japan I only spoke English out loud on 2 days.
Next: 2 man shred with Guido, 2 man shred with Dyalan at Uni.
He wasn't great at kicking the bag consecutively, so we told him the objective of the footbag was to kick the bag as hard as he could at Dyalan (whom he dubbed "tall-man"
After the demo we went into the city to have lunch. All I had had for breakfast was a meat pie, which apparently everybody eats here, but made me kinda ill. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was good, but even as you enjoy it, you also feel ill. The closest sensation I could compare it to would be eating poutine.
Well buzzed from lunch, we set up a game of foursquare right outside a supermarket, and had a few really fun games. There were only 4 of us, but it still went well. We definitely drew lots of funny looks, especially when the "make an animal noise after each kick" rule was in effect.
After the shred I got a quick chess game against Jeremy (whose openings have improved since my chess lesson), then we dropped him off at the airport. That was on Monday night, but he comes back on Friday morning, so it hardly feels like he's gone.

The weather was pants today, so I read a lot and bloggoed a bit.

I'm staying at Guido Tapia's place, trying my best to eat him out of house and home. Guido has only been playing about a year, but due to his fanatically intense approach to the sport, he's already a very solid intermediate. He has no flipside. He plays everyday for about an hour, and he has a battleplan. It's really inspiring actually. He's like the antithesis of myself at one year of playing. Rather than chase after hard tricks on one side while neglecting his flip, he is consciously forgoing hard tricks to focus on making BOPs and BOP strings solid, long, and flipsided. In other words, he's putting in the time to develop a sound foundation. I really admire this.
A couple nights ago we did a 2 man session in the carpark. It went real well. I gave Guido lots of tips, and he adapts very well. He hit ducking legover for the first time, and in yesterday's session he hit it flip, and then bsos. In the last week or so, he hit his first alpine pixie sets, so yesterday I got him to hit alpine plo as well! I stressed to him the importance of playing on his toes, and later showed him my worn-down lavers as evidence of it. I am hard-pressed to think of many other shredders I have met who are as serious about getting better as Guido, and it kinda shames me a bit that I don't approach the game as hardcore.
I had a decent shred, but again, nothing really stood out. Practiced a few of the segments for my doubles routine, and mostly just went for genuine links.

Went to Uni with Dyalan for a shred. The hope was that all the pretty girls walking around would inspire me to shred hard and go for long strings, and that Dyalan could help me practice doubles. Things worked out pretty much as planned.
The first spot we played at got rained out, so we ended up playing in some outdoor, but covered spots, where our captive audience consisted of everybody else who sought shelter from the rain. Dyalan was real good about calling me on "the," which I really appreciated. My flip tomahawk is almost certainly always "the".
I felt good for most of the session though. For some reason, I mentally felt a bit like Ales, so I just really attacked all my tricks with a lot of confidence, and even my BOPs felt very solid and textbook. Again, can't remember much in the way of highlights, other than swifter, ps egg, dod swirl, and random other single tricks.
Dyalan probably played the best I've seen him play. His strings were noticeably longer, and just had more variety. Rather than do a stepping themed run, or a double dex themed run, etc, he did runs where he mixed up atomics, pixies, dives and even some spins. I remember seeing atom bsos. I also gave him some pointers on making his drifters more midtime, and saw an immediate improvement.
At one point, some random hacky slacker joined us, and we happily switched from shred to just circle-kicking his guatemalan bag. Surprisingly, it was pretty stallable. I did a couple long (15+) guiltless runs with it, managing ducks, steps, pixies, and even spins with a minimum of adjustment. The hacky-slacker, Matt, showed interest in learning freestyle, so he and Dyalan set up a time to kick. I'm glad we played in a public spot, especially if it means we got a new recruit out of it.
After the shred, we hit trivia, but the trivia girl was late, so we did another shred right outside the trivia room. I was glad we did, because that was when Dyalan and I played our best. Some people filmed us with their phones, many high fives were exchanged, and then we went in for trivia.
Next: hopefully shred with Guido today, then tomorrow Jeremy gets back into town, so demo practice and hopefully a light shred as well.

As I stated in my last 'zine entry, the weather today sucked bigtime. I spent my day reading, watching shred vids, and catching up on journal backlog. By the time Guido got back from work, I was super-restless. Getting in a shred saved my sanity. I've played footbag every day this week, and one day I had two shreds, so I've had something like 8 sessions in 7 days. The next 3 days also look to be packed with footbag, since Jeremy is coming to town and there are demos. I hope I don't wear out my body... so far though, I feel really good.
Today's 2 man session with Guido turned out good, but halfway into it, I felt like it was going to be my first bad session in Aussie (and my first bad session in a few weeks). Thankfully though, playing with Guido gave me incentive to keep my mental game, and I never lost it. I just reminded myself that I was in Australia, playing footbag, and that I'd start getting paid to footbag over the weekend. I was really stoked that I managed to navigate myself out of my negative thoughts, and it salvaged the session for me.
Guido played pretty well. Mostly just schooled his BOPs, so I didn't feel like I gave him much helpful advice. I did give him big props a couple times in the session, but more so for just upping his consistency, rather than any breakthrough tricks or combos.
During the part of the session when I was feeling frustrated, I still managed to hit spinning clipper-barfly repeat, and slapping osis bsos for my first time. After I cleared my head, I hit some more good stuff. I hit pdx drifter to ss symple swirl on both sides. Particularly satisfying on my flip side, since it was my weaker pdx drifter and my weak ss symp swirl. Reverse swirl to infinity swirl. 8 consec clean pdx whirls. Inspired by guido, I decided to try to break my alternating osis record. It was the first time I tried to do so with my Guido-Units, and I felt confident that I had a good shot, because the insteps of the G-Units are so forgiving. Sure enough, I was able to break my record pretty easily (previously it was 20 or 21), managing a full 28 consecutive osi!
Definite highlight.
I closed out the shred with a run that approached 40 contacts, and had ps whirl bsos. But even if I hadn't hit anything all session, it'd still go down as a success, just because I was able to control my mental game and turn a bad session into a good one. Felt very proud about it. I think its also key to set a good example. People who get pissy when they shred bring everybody else down, and if you get in the habit of cursing and whingeing in private sessions, you might start doing so in public sessions, which is an image we can't afford to portray to the public.
Stoked for Jeremy's arrival tomorrow. The weather again promises to be crap, but Dyalan has a car, and I'm sure we can snare another good crowd at Uni to pump us all up. Of course, you know I'll let you all know how it went.

-salt

-chili pepper flakes
-red wine
-cherry tomatos
-2 cloves of garlic
-flour
-chicken
-spaghetti
-crumbled cheddar
Delicious, as well as being good carbo-loading for the demos tomorrow and the day after
Good day. Exhausting but in a good way. Dyalan and Jeremy dropped by the house around 10, and I made a good cheese omellette for breakfast for everybody. We discussed the choreo for our demos, and after listening to some Biggie vs. Sinatra we got down to bidness, and skooled our demo hard. Looking good. Went out for lunch, I had a caramel and white chocolate ice cream shake.
Played frisbee for a good long while. I love doing non-footbag activities with footbaggers, cause it's always so cool to find out your friends have extra talents. The highlight of frisbee was probably when a random dog ("Jackson") came and peed on Jeremy's bag
After frisbee we hit Nestle headquarters, where I got free Milo cereal, which was good and sugary. We also did our demo for the Nestle people, and they were duly impressed. There's room for improvement for sure, but I still feel pretty good about it.
After the Nestle demo (where they gave us 2 cans of rum and coke a piece, for free), we drove home, but on the way we saw a hacky slacker circle on the sidewalk, so we found parking and joined them. Actually, they had just kicked the bag behind a fence, and Dyalan went and got it. How random is that? You're kicking your sipa, when it goes behind a fence, and out of nowhere 3 random guys show up, scale a fence and get it for you.
We joined the circle, and kept our skills secret for a bit, but shortly we blew their minds.
Jeremy did consec toe stalls, then I did a pendulum, and eventually we built up to guiltless shuffle
They all literally looked like this when we were done:
'Twas sweet.
Today was a good day. I didn't have to use my AK.
