Whats with the edit button

I noticed sometimes when i edit something, only sometimes does it show on the end of my post "edited ** times in total" whilst on other occasions it doesnt show this.

ANy idea ?

It only shows "edited ** times" when you edit it after someone has posted in the same thread after the post.

It doesn't show before that so you can correct typos and stuff, and it isn't such a big deal.

It shows it after someone has replied because if you said something stupid, and someone pwns you in the thread after that, you can't edit the post without others knowing it. Also I am a n00b.

mod edit: also it doesn't say anything when a mod edits your post. - Jeremy
