Institutional Racism

Post by tstep84 »

I have to write a reflection on a paper dealing with an article from a newspaper, or website, dealing with insititutional racism. For those that don't know what institutional racism is I will explain. In society their exists institutions. Examples would be schools, hospitals, government, busniesses, court systems, yada yada yada. So it would be racism pertaining to those. I haven't had any luck finding one, and have been reading the city paper almost daily. If anyone could help, it would be very much appreciated.

Can you do a Jail?

Find an article on San Quentin.

There is a lot of racism there, people are seperated into different gangs according to race and...

It's a bad place to be.

Here's a story that recently made the news:

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?secti ... id=4675253

Chris Rock (the black comedian who's done several funny movies) 's Mom claims she was racially discriminated against by being seated but ignored for service at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in South Carolina. Personally I find the irony here overwhelmingly hilarious (Cracker Barrel, get it?). Hope that helps.

Yea, In Prisons, there is a huge amount of institutional racism. I appreciate the tip. And I think I will be able to use the other article as well.

Thanks Again, I will let you know how I do.

MAn, I wish I had seen this topic back in October. If anyone is still interested in it, here's the title of a great article. I had the oppportunity to meet Dr. Akintunde and he lives his words with absolute intelligence and wit.

The title of the article is:
"White Racism, White Supremacy, White Privilege, and the social construction of Race: Moving from Modernist to Postmodernist Multiculturalism" by Dr. Omawale Akintunde.

I don't remember where is was originally published, but here's a link
