Alpine Discussion Resurfaces

Post by Senor Grommet »

So, tell me again how the term "Alpine" is allowed to exist in the footbag world. How does one justify its presence? I'm not sayig we should scrap it, just that its stupid and adds nothing because we already havce good terms to describe head dexes.

Arguments against:
-does not actually specify how head moves around bag
-same number of syllables as ducking, diving, weaving. zulu
-just another term that doesn't help to condense footbag terminology

Arguments for:
-?

arguments for: can make some move names shorter. For example:

"alpine dimmiest" as opposed to "pixie ducking paradon"
"alpine schmoe" as opposed to "stepping diving same side legover"
"alpine smoke" as opposed to "pixie ducking opposite drifter"

You will notice though that alpine only shortens move names were the non-alpine version is named and the alpine version is not. It would make no sense to say "alpine dimwalk" for ex. because that already has a name (phoenix).

Now for me, alpine supposes "diving" fo same side stuff and "ducking" for op stuff. "Alpine" won't work for zulu and weaving (at least for me)...

And that's my thoughts on the subject. One more thing, and this has been debated, if there's no uptime dex, a trick can't be alpine (e.g. no alpine marius for ex.) I don't know what the general consensus is about this though.

Agreed Max. Alpine = ducking or diving, depending on the other components. And it helps condense those move names. And what's the point in saying alpine marius, when you could just say ducking marius? Much more sense.

Because technically you could mean "ducking spinning torque" as opposed to "spinning ducking torque".

You can say alpine smoke.
You can say ducking smoke.

We all know the trick will be pixie ducking op drifter, no one can hit a ducking pixie op drifter. Therefore, alpine doesn't really do much.

Also you can say alpine dimmiest, or ducking dimmiest. Still, people who know footbag will know what you mean.

ducking torch-r-rack?

You could understand that as stepping ducking superfly... YET, some smart ass playing devil's advocate (such as myself) might imply that it could be a ducking ss mofly....

I dont think that really proved why alpine is a better term than ducking. No one would say they hit ducking torch-r-rack unless they meant a duck in between the 1st and second dexes. Ducking mofly is a completely different move.

if one is to get rid of the term "alpine", then you may as well get rid of the other nicknames and terms such as "blurry" b/c all of them help summarize a sequences of components without all that extra word usage.

alpine legbeater vs atomic ducking opposite butter

alpine=much easier to say. cuts down on syllables and thus saves energy for footbag :P

Ducking is meant to describe the exact location of the actual duck, similarly to spinning. Alpine by definition leaves room for assumptions.

or if they meant weaving mofly

edit: excuse the fact that this move is pretty ridiculous, but so is alpine torch-r-rack

alpine is a word made up to make moves sound cooler

alpine legbeater-
atomic ducking butter or atomic diving op butter ?

alpine sidewalk -
stepping diving butter or stepping ducking ss butter ?

alpine smear -
pixie ducking mirage or pixie diving op mirage ?

etc

Alpine is a (basically) useless term as you CANNOT determine what move someone is describing based on the term of alpine. I reinforce the idea that it was created to make moves sound cooler without actually being able to desribe the move competely. Alpine DOES sound cool.

Unfortunately, it seems that James Randall was the only person who has been able to understand my argument, as shown by:

Kevin Crowley, you completely missed the point. When you said:
if one is to get rid of the term "alpine", then you may as well get rid of the other nicknames and terms such as "blurry" b/c all of them help summarize a sequences of components without all that extra word usage.
it shows me that you think alpine "help[s] summarize a sequences of components." Alpine does NOT summarize anything, and it does not make anything shorter. Alpine legbeater vs ducking legbeater (same # syllables), alpine blur vs spikehammer (alpine actually creates more sylllables), alpine reactor vs. ducking reactor (same # syllables).

Alpine CANNOT be compared to blurry because blurry shortens and blurry defines dexterity motions (stepping paradox). Alpine does NEITHER of these things! Re-read my post and then make a counter argument that brings up valid arguments for the use of Alpine.

So far the only good argument is that, although it is a useless term, it sounds "cool."

The correct usage of Alpine is to specify a DUCK in between uptime and downtime components.. Not a dive, weave, or zulu.

Should we create more terms to specify if the middle component is diving, weaving or zulu?

alpine torch-r-rack has been hit, so it's not so riddiculous.

when jere v hit diving mobius (as in dive then spin) is when i realized alpine had a use. although it doesn't really follow the "alpine" guidlines, it does work by inserting the duck between 2 other components. what we call "diving mobius" would be better defined by "alpine mobius", inserting the dive between the spin and the dex. the "dive then spin" mobius would be much better understood if it were called "alpine mobius" in stead of saying "i hit diving mobius... uhh, where, you know, you dive first... and then do a mobius."

that's really the only way i see it being of any use, but even that case is only going to pop up every once in a while. it's true, it can easily be exchanged with ducking diving weaving or zulu, which also is much more descriptive, in pretty much any other move type. the only thing that's going to keep it around is that it's been ingrained into our vocabulary. feel free to drop alpine from personal use, but i don't think it'll change every one's use of the word.

edit: sorry i only read a couple posts so forgive me if i repeated the convo.
