Very nice Ken!

Looks like Conrad got you stuck on tapdown swirl, and osis to nuke's.

Have fun back in NY, and come back to Az for you can kick with the Unity crew again!

Felt pretty sluggish today and didn't have time to get to the gym. Still, I didn't have much else to do today, so I forced myself to get in an easy session outdoors. I know that if I want to get better, especially at my age, I need to put in as much time as I can, whenever I can.

I warmed up by doing over 400 consecutive inside kicks before I got bored. Unlike last session, I had some trouble coming up with ideas of what to do. I knew I wanted a light session, so I did very little stepping, no atomic, and no 5 adds. I decided it wouldn't hurt to skool some zooming, so a little messing around with it yielded:

*zooming style gyro pick up for my first time, both sides.
*zooming gyro legover, another 1st.
*zoom style peeking osis on flip for my 1st time.

When I was in California I saw Kool Czyk hit some reverse whirls, which is a concept I never was good at. When I got back, I watched the Monhollon bros special again, and decided that they can look cool sometimes, so today seemed like the session to skool them. I managed:

*far reverse whirl bsos
*reverse whirl-whirl-reverse whirl bsos
*reverse whirl-reverse swirl-reverse whirl

Who knows, maybe this will improve my dynos or something. I figured that if I was gonna work reverse whirls, I may as well work other tricks which nobody likes, but can be cool. So naturally Da Da Curve was next. Da Da Curve was actually my first 4 add ever, but I used to do them from toe. I had never really tried them flipside, but given that my flip DLO has improved so much recently, I thought they'd come pretty easy. They did, but they still feel really funny. Doing clean da da curves feels at least as hard as doing ps whirls. Some fun combos were:

*pogo style ripwalk-dada-blur
*da da curve x3

I also realized I forgot one highlight from last session:

*fs reactor.

Not 100% how clean the whirl was, because I was so surprised to hit it. Felt pretty tight, but the flail set leaves you at a weird angle. Not really a trick I care enough to get obsessed about, but maybe I'll try and get one on film when I'm back at Cornell.

Kinda looking forward to going back to school.

Hey Ken, if you're at a lack for inspiration I could post a couple of ideas. Do you have a challenge thread? I have some cool links in mind with swirls, zooms and stuff :)

Back in Ithaca! Snow on the ground, longjohns, and walking up hills everyday. But its good to be back.

Max: I'm not really hurting for inspiration, I just had one session where it was cold out and I was tired. But yeah, if you ever want to drop a challenge in here, feel free. The last two challenges I was given were too hard for me, so I didn't take them too seriously (Zac M. challenged me to hit gyro barrage-gyro barfly repeat, and Mirken challenged me to write short blog entries. I don't know if either are possible).

My last day in Arizona I went outside to cut my hair, and the weather was so incredibly nice that I decided I'd get in a final shred before leaving. I'd already packed up my shoes and gear, so I played in my 1st pair of G-Units ever; the ones Guido Tapia gave me in Australia over a year ago. Man they are beat-to-shit. Still, I figured it would be my last chance to shred outside for a while, so I jumped on it.

Highlights:

*fairy legover. I think my first time ever?
*vertigo both sides, no bsos.
*dimwalk swirl-ps whirl
*legbreaker-fog-dimwalk swirl
*far reverse whirl x2
*janiwalker-whirling swirl
*zooming dlo and zooming torque...in the same string! :D

Itching to play 4square with my club again... soon I hope.

ken-
have you hit zooming out of blender or pdx blender?
zooming out of torque?
what about zooming pdx whirl? like osis>spinning (actually gyro) pdx whirl.
if all that is too easy, some of the stuff currently in my signature make decent challenges.

peace out c-fan!

As Morbo would say, "I will destroy you!" (at four square). Bring it on tomorrow afternoon. Also, let's shred.

Had my first session in Ithaca of 2007, and it was lots of fun.

The plan was to try out a new shred spot with Nick, Pascal, and Luis. When it appeared that Luis was super-late, we called him, and it turned out he had been ambushed for a surprise birthday party! I had no idea it was his birthday. Congrats man.

With only 3 shredders, our original plan to play 4square was temporarily foiled, so we ended up just shredding. Nick and Pascal hadn't played much over break, so they were mostly knocking off rust. Pascal's whirls improved though, and Nick was hitting symp mirages pretty consistently. I'm excited for this semester.

I thought I played well throughout, though I didn't have much in the way of standout highlights. I did manage to get 14 contacts of rubberman without much difficulty. I'm really happy that rubberman has clicked for me.

Yeah, I've hit blender-spinning osis-pdx blender. I find zooming out of dyno a lot easier than out of blender. As for torque, I've hit spinning osis, merkon, spin clipper, gyro clipper, and gyro mirage out of it. I'd really like to get torque-mobius. I'll try and continue working zooms more. Hit torque-gyro mirage again yesterday without much trouble.

Halfway through the session, we randomly run into another member of the club, Bill, whom we'd forgotten to invite. D'oh! It was definitely lucky though, as it gave us a chance to play 4square. We ended up playing 4 really fun games. I won 3, and managed to continue my resolution streak of not debating calls. I definitely think that makes it more fun.

The windchill in Ithaca is beastly. <---my face looks like this after a 3 minute walk outdoors.

Pretty biting cold here in Ithaca. I expected this semester to be harsher weather-wise, but I was still taken aback. I heard that it was 15 degrees out yesterday, but with the windchill it was -3. I don't need Andrew Grant or any Russians/Finns posting here telling me what a p*ssy I am, it's still damned cold. :x

I'm slowly seeing everybody from last semester, and there's a feeling in the air that the semester is going to start. You know, a kind of electricity in the air, anticipation. I'm still not 100% sure what classes I'm taking, but I'm trying not to panic.

Footbag helps me stay calm. Got in another session yesterday, and this time Luis made it. Unfortunately, Nick bailed on us, and Brett is busy getting hazed by his frat cause its "rush week" or something, so he's out for a while. All this added up to a session that only had Pascal, Luis and myself. Good vibe, but no 4 square.

The session started out well for me, with me hitting a bunch of swirl tricks for my first time. But then I went to get water, and in that 3 minute period my body completely cooled off and essentially shut down. I was able to get a small second wind back later, but the lesson is learned. I'm gonna wear warmer clothes at future shreds, and come with filled water bottles.

Onto highlights. Tricks with a left foot swirl will be marked LS, right foot swirls RS.

*flip dimwalk swirl (LS), my first time ever
*flip ripwalk swirl (LS), most likely my first time ever.
*ripwalk swirl bsos
*pogo style ripwalk swirl (RS)
*legbeater swirl (LS), 1st ever
*flip barfly swirl (RS), 1st ever
*A run with parkwalk swirl (LS), ripwalk swirl (RS), and dimwalk swirl (RS).
*Frontside toe blur bsos! 8O
*A single run that had the zooming versions of all the following: merkon, gyro mirage, gyro clipper, peeking osis, spinning osis, spinning clipper. All using the same zoom, but still felt very good.

I was definitely stoked about the new tricks, and happy that my zooms are still there. I was hoping they'd be more consistent by now, but I'm willing to put in a lot of time if need be. I think that swirls and zooms will make stylish additions to my game.

I went ice skating last night which was super fun, but likely means no footbag until tomorrow or the day after.

Well, I'm not Andrew, and I'm not a Russian or a Finn, So I can tell you that your a wuss! Two weeks ago we had -40 degree weather with the windchill. It was still -25 without. In case you're wondering, -40 celsius is also -40F. You probably knew that, but if not you don't have to ask now.

Anyways, props on the new swirl tricks. They sound really fun! Keep playing through the cold.

1st week of grad school is tough. I just feel completely drained and exhausted everyday. Like, by the afternoon I need a nap, and even if I'm lucky enough to find the time to take it, I get completely drained again by nighttime.

No, I don't have mono.

Found the time to get in a club meeting yesterday, using the new dance floor space we have reserved for the semester. The room itself is really nice. Good floors, high ceilings, well-lit and heated. And completely reserved for us. It's good to be a club.

The session itself was real laid back. Again we failed to get out enough troops for 4square. Hopefully we'll get our old number back once we start playing regularly, but this horrid weather doesn't help. It can be hard for people without cars to justify walking 15+ minutes up and down hills just to play footbag, sweat, and then have to walk home.

The exhaustion of student life kinda carried over for me in the shred. I just messed around, and my strings were kinda short. The one pleasant surprise, was finding that my enterrage was randomly on point. That's a trick that I had only hit a few times ever, and back then I was skooling it. For some reason though, yesterday it was just clicking.

Highlights:

*flip smear x7. New record, but some of them were sloppy.
*da da curve x4. Pretty fun, and harder than you'd think.
*blur-enterrage, no seal.
*enterrage (ended on left toe), and in the seal had smog (right toe), and flip flurry (left toe)
*enterrage again, with strong flurry (right toe) in the seal.

Had some close looks at flurry-enterrage, and fog-enterrage. Those would be soooo cool.

After the shred Pascal, Luis and I played some 2 square. I definitely prefer 4 square, cause you can be sneakier, and it gives the weaker players a better chance. Our game dragged on a long time, but I finally eked out the win.

In slightly footbag-related news, I'm going to play IM basketball this semester with the people in my master's program. Cross your fingers I don't get too injured. I've found that footbag and basketball don't really mix well.

The reason it's been so quiet in the blog here lately is simple: I've been really really sick for about a week now. :? Pretty much got a bad case of the flu, with a particularly nasty cough. This just means that I'm tired all the time, and hacking up a lot of phlegm. Unfortunately, this is the only hacking I'm able to do. I haven't played footbag, gone out with friends, or drunk alcohol in over a week. The alcohol thing is probably good, but the other 2 things are pretty harsh. Friends and footbag are two things that I rely on to help me cope with the stress of school, so kicking off this semester has been a bit harder than I'd like. The freezing weather doesn't help much either. And 2007 was starting off as such a good year for footbag for me. Since I can't play, I may as well reminisce about the first 3 weeks of the year, footbagwise:

*10 unique fearless
*Shred with Santa Cruz crew, UNITY, and Bear Feet within a one week span
*fog rubberman on two occasions
*bunch of new swirl tricks, including fs legbeater swirl
*more consistent zooming
*better janis; jani-flurry finally, and jani-blurriest-pdx torque-pdx blender.

It's really killing me that I can't play. :x

The plan for now is to continue what I've been doing: sleep as much as I can while staying on top of school work, and try not to stress out about internships/etc.

I guess I should feel lucky that my footbag-break isn't the result of something worse. I'll get over this cold in less than a week (I hope), and it's not like I broke my leg or something.

If anybody ever asks me what eternity feels like, I could give them some good answers.

1209600 seconds.

20160 minutes.

336 hours.

14 days.

2 freaking whole weeks without footbag! :x

God damn that felt like forever. Time goes slower when you are sick and doing homework. Just trust me on this one. Oh yeah, and it sucks.

Thankfully, I finally feel like I've turned the corner on this cold. Yesterday I put on the G-Units for the first time in 2 weeks and got my shred on. Yes! :)

I can't tell you how good it felt to play again. My cold had really made my semester start off rough. I had such high hopes for the first few weeks before work got hard: make a shred vid, get the club off to a good start, maybe go on some dates, etc... and I wasn't able to do any of those things because I was at home coughing up mucus all day. :x

But more than anything, not being able to play was the worst.

Warming up for the session, just doing inside kicks made me smile. In a very pleasant surprise, I found that I hadn't lost too much after taking off 2 weeks. My muscle memory for most tricks was still there, and my stamina wasn't terrible either. I was probably running on some adrenaline which helped, but whatever the case, I didn't feel like I had lost all of my game during my time off.

Highlights:

*spinning osis x2. Not new, but my first time doing it with my new zoom style.
*toe dyno-spinning osis
*tapdown swirl, first try
*enterrage
*matador-blur-atom smasher-atomic drop.

Using the other nuke set:
*sumo-legbeater-blur-atomsmasher-atomic drop
*fs legbeater-pogo blur-fs atom smasher. So half of frontside rubberman. 8)
*flip alpha smasher

My best two runs of the day were:
*janiwalker- [blur-dimwalk] rpt- [blizzard-dimwalk] rpt- [blizzard-parkwalk-ducking butterfly] repeat.

and

*janiwalker-rubberman- [duck butterfly-dive butterfly] rpt- [pdx whirl-whirl] repeat-pdx blender

But even if I didn't have any blog-worthy highlights at all, it still would have been a great session, if only because I missed playing so much. That said, hitting a bunch of new combos made it all that much better. :)

I hope this is a sign of things looking up in the coming weeks.

Still not 100% if next weekend is a go or not. I'll try and sort that out ASAP and get back to you Dave. I'd really like to go on a shred trip though, just for a change of scenery, and maybe to jolt the club back into the sport. I feel like this semester we've been really held back due to sickness, weather, and school in general.

In good news it looks like I've officially healed up. I don't even need to bring a box of tissues with me wherever I go. :) But now that I'm healthy again, I really have no excuses for not hitting the books. :?

I got in a good shred last night at juggling club. Really glad I made it out too...it had been a real stressful week, and I needed to play to mentally re-balance myself. Pascal was recovering from a cold, so he only played lightly in long pants. Nobody else from the club was able to make it, partly because it was very last-minute.

This session my janiwalker felt very on-point, and my nuke sets also felt very strong. With my nuclear sets I didn't change my technique (I try not to move my support leg at all, and really just use my hips as much as possible), I just focussed on doing them a lot faster. By changing the speed, i think I ended up missing more sets than usual, but the sets that DID manage to come through were way higher. Something to continue toying around with I think. Before the session, I had only ever stepped out of one of my matadors, but the new technique allowed me to get good sets out of both matadors. Between my improved nukes and my more consistent janis, I ended up hitting a bunch of new fearless links.

Overall I just felt like it was a very good session, and it helped me mentally.

Highlights:

*alpine leg to 10 contacts of rubberman.
*matador-bl. whirl-bl. whirl, both sides!
*jani-bl.drifter
*matador-bl. drifter on one side, and:
*matador-bl. drifter-ps whirl on the other.
*jani-bl. whirl-bl.whirl-stepping bail. Was going for blurriest.

And the biggest highlight of the session was:

*janiwalker to fog you bitches!!! (props to anybody who knows what that's a reference to). In the seal I bsosed the fog, and had a pdx torque and ps whirl-spin osis too. I was very excited about this link, since I've thought it was super cool since I saw Sunil hit it in 2000, and figured I'd never be able to do it myself. Up until very recently (last summer) my janis were never good enough to step out of, and given how my strong and flip sides line up, I knew I'd have to hit flip fog out of jani. So to finally hit this combo, and to have hit it well... it made me feel like I'd made some solid progress over the years.

I think it's pretty exciting in footbag that you can play for nearly a decade years, and still be making progress and playing at the top of your game.

Yeah. Footbag is pretty much the best ever. That link is really sweet, props.

Interesting about your nuke sets. Why don't you move your support leg? It makes it much easier. I don't think it's incorrect either. Do you hop to the side when hitting other pdx moves?

I guess I was a bit unclear in my last post. See, with footbag I find that the two following things are often completely different:

1. What my body does.
2. What I tell my body to do.

For example: when I hit the trick "flurry," my body does a clipper stall, then I do two mirage dexes with one leg, and finish by doing a legover with my other leg. That's what my body does, and falls into category #1.

If I tell my body to do 2 mirages and a legover, I can't do it. If, however, I tell my body to do a clipper stall, switch my feet as fast as I can, and focus on doing a legover, then my body magically does a flurry. It's like I can only hit certain tricks by fooling my body into doing them. I guess that's why they're called "tricks."

So with nuclear set, my support leg does in fact slide back when I do them, and that is proper form. If I visualize myself doing this though, the bag always hits my support leg before my dex leg even gets there. Instead, when I want to hit nuke sets I make a conscious effort NOT to move my support leg. When I visualize the trick this way, I get a good set, even though my support leg DOES in fact move.

Don't get me started on how I visualize janiwalkers... the gap between what I envision and what I do could not be wider.

Hope that cleared things up. I'll try and make a video sometime soon so you can see for yourself what my nukes and janis look like these days.

Really good turnout at footbag club on Monday. Felt like the first time this semester that we had an actual club meeting, as opposed to just a few of us getting together to play in a room. The session started with Luis, Pascal, Nick, Bill, Yin and myself, and then later on a couple guys from juggling club who are interested in footbag joined us for foursquare.

With 6 players right from the start, we decided to split into 2 circles. Felt good to have enough people to require 2 circles. I was in the circle with Luis and Yin, one of our beginners. I thought Luis played real well. His BOPs are really starting to come in well. Yin is still new to the game, but shows a lot of potential. We mostly have him working toe and inside stalls on both sides. I think he could do ATW now if we pushed him, but I'd rather see him master his kicks and basic stalls first.

I started the session well. I warmed up with some strongside zooming, and was happy to see it still works. While I'd love to be like Landes and hit a ton of hard zooming in every string, I'd also be content if I ended up getting consistent gyro mirages and gyro clippers out of osis in my regular runs. Once I got warm, I picked up where I left off last session, just working stepping tricks out of matadors and janis.

Highlights:

*jani-blizzard, likely a first.
*suuuuuper close to jani-food. Have I hit this combo before? I think I may have, but today it felt particularly clean and tight.
*matador-blurrieAAAAAAAAARRRRGH!!!!!

One second I'm clearing the step out of matador, the next second I’m on my back on the floor, clutching my ankle and gasping for breath. It was that fast and unexpected. Vicious ankle twist. I'm vaguely aware of Luis and Yin stepping a bit closer. They look more confused than concerned, probably because I had been yelling loudly the whole session every time I hit or came close to something new. So they were probably wondering why this time around I decided to fall in addition to yelling. Soon enough however, I think they realized that this pain was real deal. As soon as I was able to get my breathing back under control, I composed myself enough to ask for a bag of ice.

Last semester I also twisted my ankle, when I went to NYC, but this time it felt way way worse. In NYC I could put enough weight on it to walk almost immediately, but I couldn't flex my ankle to play footbag. This time around, I couldn't even put weight on my leg. I had to hop one-legged to get to my clothes to change, and then I spent the next hour or so lying on my back, leg on a folding chair wrapped in ice, watching people play 4square. I wasn't that concerned about healing enough to walk, because Im confident that will happen sooner than later. No, what really has me worried is how the injury will affect my shred game. Last semester it took me about a month and a half before I felt my leg was back to normal. There was a long period where I needed an extensive warmup before I could play, and it wasn't until winter break that I really felt I had made a complete recovery. The fact that I strained the same ankle, and worse this time, has me worried. For the record, its my right leg ankle, the one that Setman likes to criticize.

But things aren't all bad. The fact that I got hurt inside a school gym meant I got some cool ice packs for free. They're like plastic bags with white pellets and another plastic bag of water within. You puncture the inner bag of water, and when it mixes with the ammonium nitrate pellets, the bag gets real cold due to the chemical reaction. The fact that I iced my ankle immediately after the injury probably helped keep down the swelling. I'm writing this 48 hours after the injury, and my ankle never really swelled up that much. I've been really really good about keeping weight off it, and I've done the usual stuff of compressing and elevating it too. So the other piece of good news, is that Pascal's roommate happened to have a pair of crutches at their place, so I got to borrow a pair of crutches for free. I also borrowed a couple seasons of Simpsons too, which has helped me laugh through my convalescence.

The final piece of good news is that Ithaca is getting beat down by a blizzard now. But Ken, wouldn't a blizzard make it even HARDER for you to get around, especially now that you are on crutches? Well the answer to that is yes, but the fact is this blizzard is SO strong, that its also impossibly hard for EVERYBODY to get around. School got cancelled on Wednesday! Normally, I would have cut my classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday anyway, but now because of the blizzard, its almost as if I didn't miss classes on Wednesday (and god willing, Thursday too). Cool.

In bad news, this injury obviously means I won't be playing for a while, which sucks because I kinda rely on footbag for my sanity. But hey, maybe it will free up some time for me to get a social life, or *gasp*, focus on my studies! Looks like my trip to PSU will have to wait, but at least I'm not missing any big tournaments because of this.

Wish me luck on my recovery.
