The Dan Harris Footblog, All In Maine

Post by DanJohnHarris »

Figured I'd give a blog a try. This will chronicle my progress for the rest of the school year, at least. Please critique my game, I'm doing this to help me stay on track and get better, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

To start, here's some footage from these past few days. I've been pretty tired all around, so I couldn't really do much, but I threw in that sh*tty blurry whirl because I like the way they look regardless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl7MwI3Zwy4

I started playing a little under 5 years ago, but I haven't played all the way through. I played for about a year and a half when I first started, then stopped for 3 years until about 4 months ago. It took a while to get back into it, but I'd say I've been better than my old self for about 1.5 months.

What I'll hit next:

Blurry Whirl bsos, Atomic SS and FS Whirl bsos, fairy/pixie ducking whirl, ripwalk back to back, and my hardest sick 3:
Pixie (maybe fairy) ducking whirl->blurry whirl->ps whirl

I love whirls

Comments are very welcome!

I saw your video, good stuff! Not sure what part of Maine you live in but there are a few shredders who live up there, Logan, Joe and John. You should be able to find them on modified, they don't post much but I think they all still play. Hope you have a good indoor shred spot, it must be frickin freezing up there.

EDIT: here is the topic on Maine shredders

haha yes, it is very cold up here, so I move the ping pong table to the side and play in my basement. I go to school in central maine, but I'm home for break on the southeast coast. I checked on modified, there are 2 maine clubs, the fudge sackers and the central maine club, are John Joe or Logan in either of those?

Tomorrow evening, I'll be in Portland with another footbagger, and we'll definitely be shreddin around town. I'll check on modified and see if anyone wants to join in.

Either way, I'll bring my camera and get some footage. After resting all day today, it should be a good session!

Ok, so we didn't get to kick much in Portland. I met John around 4 or 5, and we couldn't find any open places to kick in.

We saw an elementary school that seemed to be open for some event, so we walked in and started shredding in the cafeteria. After a bit, some guy came over and asked us if we were here to pick anyone up, we told them yes and played it off a bit. He asked us 'did you sign them out?' and John said 'Yeah, we should probably go grab him now, huh' and we got outta there pretty quick.

Then, we went to the Maine Mall, our 'sure-fire' spot, even though I didn't feel like being in front of people much at the moment (pretty blazed..). We found a big nook next to Best Buy, a branch-off that was only for a few bathrooms and soda machines, but was very open. We played there for about 4 or 5 minutes, and all of a sudden, I drop a clipper and turn to grab the footbag, and a cop is standing inches from me. "Hey" he goes, all smug like he just caught me doing something naughty and 'we both know it', that whole attitude. He told us it was gonna be a problem, and that we should put it away for now. Jackass.

Well we drove around a bit more and John was ready to go get his night started, so me and Alyse had to drive an hour back home. Safe to say I had "bluefeet".

Well, I've been resting a lot because being out on the boat (yes, I lobster) is pretty rough when I haven't done it for a while (up at school...) and I've been pretty sore. Today, my muscles should all be fine, but I had a good night last night and another kind of good morning today, so hopefully I'm not too sluggish. I will update with video in a couple hours.

Hey all, I put together a new video of some of the stuff I've been working on lately. I am trying to get atomic set completely down, any tips would be appreciated!
http://media.putfile.com/single-tricks
Whirr is my new favorite move (well it's always sorta been my fave, but I could never hit it, you know what i mean) and I'd like to be able to throw them in anywhere, any pointers on getting them down?

The footbag club turnout at the university is pretty sad right now, one of our players won't be back this semester, and everyone's pretty busy. Not to mention the FREEZING ASS COLD that all of a sudden took hold of Maine, and everyone lives all the way across campus from each other and walking to the racquetball courts is a pain.

Anyone dig the pork? (porque?).

What I'll hit next:
chains including drifters, ripwalks and sidewalks, blurry whirls, ps whirls, p whirls, and whirrs. I just need to keep schooling so I can hit everything into and out of everything else with ease, and build up some endurance to stay relaxed. John M and I planned a run for tomorrow, hopefully some running will do the trick.

Dan props on all those moves. Your style looks very relaxed yet controlled, I bet you don't get injured much. I wish I had your whirls. I've been playing for over a year and I've never been able to hit one.

I assume you're at U of Maine, Orono, how many people play up there? How did you learn to play, did someone teach you or did you just figure everything out from videos on the internet?

Also what kind of bag do you use? It looks pretty big.

Ben,

Thanks for the support. I haven't had any real injuries, some close calls where I've bounced off my ankles and some intense shin pain every now and again, but nothing debilitating.

Yup, I'm at UMO, and we have about a half a dozen serious footbaggers who attend the club, but I've seen loads (and joined in with them too) of circle kickers who still believe they're playing 'hacky sack' in my travels.

I learned to play from the flipsider.com video section and forum when it was up, teaching myself and drilling in my basement, because no one at my highschool knew what the sport really was. Now, it's a communal effort and we all help eachother out and discuss the sport during footbag club, a much better way to learn!

The footbag I use is one I made out of a few old shirts and some sand I filtered out of a bucket of beach sand, it is fairly big and I don't like it at all, but I'm unbelievably broke and I can't get a fancy one... so I'll use it until I can find a job up here.

Do you have any specific problems with whirls? When starting, doing them half up-time from a clipper will help to develop the muscles, and allow you to still do them, before you have them down with real mastery. It's the big secret to whirrs, and whirrs are just a couple of whirls so it does apply. As with everything else, practice.. practice.. practice

In a session with john M today I hit a chain I've been thinking about:
blur>legbeater>ps whirl
We discussed rubberman drill for a bit, is it this: blur>atomsmasher>legbeater?
either way, that's a drill I'm thinking of starting to school
what other good drills are there for stepping, whirling, or 3 add toe?

My shins are fucked. I've been playing a lot, stitching a lot of bags, but I broke my camera so I can't even take pics of them. I got pretty good, but I don't know if I can play for a long time.
I heard shin splints grow into fractures. I pushed my shin splints for months and months, and they only hurt more when I played so I took aspirin. I'm drunk now, stoned and drunk. My shins hurt so bad today when I went to bed.
Oh, I'm nocturnal. I go to bed around 10 or 11 in the morning, and wake up at dinner time to catch my breakfast. I watch the sun set and rise, instead of rise and set. I have 5 classes at UMaine, and I am failing every one of them. I haven't been to class in months. I wake up, smoke weed, smoke cigs, eat food, and sleep. I stitch a footbag in between, every now and then. I get alcohol when I can, but I am usually broke, but today I managed to grab some PBRs with JohnK with some money from home.
I'm eating Cheez-it baked snack crackers, little debbie easter basket cakes, and using an Acer laptop to type this human message.

As far as footbag.
I been drillin a lot of stuff. Stepping everything, ripped warriors, alpine blurry whirl, downtime dawt... Swirls, reverse swirls, pincher>datw, stepping illusion near and far, torques, nuclear mirages.. working on stepping ss whirling swirl, ripstein, tatw, blenders, paradons/barflys same thing.

I probably won't be playing for a long time.
