Hmmm, basketball at CFJ2 is intriguing. I'll see how viable it is for us to get space/time to do it. I think I'd be most down for it if we could get like a 3 on 3. At the Santa Cruz Invitational we had a full on 5-on-5 which was sweet. But yeah, I'll definitely try to at least get a game of one-on-one with you.

Got in a light shred tonight with Luis. We were both exhausted, so we didn't play too long. The biggest highlight for me was playing in a room with the breakdancing club, because that meant we had really good shred music for most of the time.

For some reason DSC wasn't really clicking with me today. It was a bit frustrating. I hit one midstring, and another to a handcatch. I spent most of this session working on unique fearless stuff. My best strings were 6 and 7 respectively. I also hit barroque-pdx torque, but when I looked at it on video (on the small screen at regular speed) it didn't look like I was cleaning the barroque.

Shredwise I think I got most excited when Luis hit dyno x2.

I don't have any classes tomorrow, so depending how my body feels I may get in another session and try and film it.

Pretty lazy day. Fall break is this weekend, and I haven't figured out any interesting plans. Worst case scenario is I stick around here and do no work. Most probable scenario sees me sticking around town, playing some kicky sack, and doing a little work.

I got in a light solo shred today and filmed it. I had trouble warming up solo, and ended up playing a game of HORSE in the middle of the session when an old acquaintance walked by. I won by a lot, even though my shot felt trash today.

I hit a couple double spinning clippers (DSC) in strings, but its still not as solid as I'd like. I think my problem is that I worry too much about set height and footwork, while I should really just spin faster on both spins. I'll get it down at some point.

I hit a cool 3 add-2 add-3 add combo with a basketball, but I won't post it in case Rory wants to use it on a video.

G-Unit intrigue continues... the canvas layer is starting to bust off, and what should I see below it? A layer of FOAM! 8O That means that this pair of g-units had:

1. a layer of leather (the outside of the shoe). Black.
2. a thin layer of padding, which wasn't foam. A lighter shade of black.
3. a layer of canvas. White.
4. a layer of foam. Grey
5. the thin layer of mesh (the innermost part of the shoe). black.

Isn't that crazy? So I have to remove FOUR layers of crap before getting my shoes to the same thickness as my last pair. That's insane.

I'm still not sure whether I will eventually do this or not. I think that leaving the canvas layer might make them last longer, but I'm undecided whether or not that's a good enough tradeoff for the decreased sense of touch.

Got in a shred with Luis today. Campus was a ghost world, as most students had left for greener pastures thanks to Fall Break. That was a bit of a shame, since I was in the mood to play 4square. My legs felt tired, and a bit funny. Like the hip flexors weren't quite 100%. Because of this, I set 2 rules for the session: no sets of any kind, and no tricks above 4 adds. These actually turned out to be fun constraints.

Highlights:

*26 ducking butterflies. I felt like I could do more too, but there was a new player with us, and I felt guilty for taking so long. Still fun.
*Three DSCs in the session. They felt better than last session. I nearly got 2 in a run...just off the foot
*Spin clip x3 on flip, and in the same run x4 on strong.
*whirr, first try. I guess this and DSC are both technically 5s, but not by the late 90s definition.

That guy must be full of bullets.

I think the hardest part of double spinning for me is spinning into the bag. It's sucky!

50 Cent (the G-Unit guy) has apparently been shot 9 times. 8O

Yeah, I run into the bag on my second spin all the time. :x

Dunno why, but I recently dug up this old gem of a video from last year's xmas calendar: http://www.footbag.org/gallery/show/10764
It's 5 minutes of J$ going nuts, followed by 5 minutes of Phil going crazy. I love how high the level of freestyle has become.

Yesterday I was horribly unproductive. Just sat in front of my computer all day and got no work done. Around 7 pm I got so disgusted with myself I went to the gym to play footbag. I got there only to find the gym closed, due to fall break. :x I even checked the website before going, but they didn't post fall break hours. Happily though, it's been unseasonably warm lately. So despite it being nighttime in October, I was able to play outside in shorts and a jersey no problem. I played under a streetlight, which made me feel nostalgic about my first year in footbag, when I was so hardcore and keen about playing that I would play in any conditions.

I ended up having a decent session, despite the lack of music or decent conditions.

Highlights:

*vortex-PSW-pdx torque, first try.
*a couple DSCs. Didn't try too many, because I could feel the concrete eating my shoes on spins.
*PSW-DDD repeat. :D Had DSC off the foot in the seal.
*Mullet bsos, with a bl. torque in the seal.
*PSW-spin clip repeat.
*DPM-atom-leg repeat to pdx torque. Dedicated to Ian Brill, in the hopes that it will somehow karmically get him to come out to CFJ2. I met Ian at my very first footbag tournament 10 years ago, and he was the badass local superstar of NYC. We haven't been at the same footbag tournament since, which is just weird.

The other highlight of the session, was that my recently-modded shorts worked well. I have 2 pairs of footbag shorts which have pockets that always annoyingly parachute out when I play. 2 nights ago I finally took the initiative to loosely sew them in, to prevent this ballooning effect. Last night was my first time playing with the modded pockets, and they worked like a charm. Very cool. :)

Me too. :) The other night when the gym was closed, another student who came to use the gym started talking to me when I told him the bad news. It turns out he was one of the breakdancers (see a few posts back), and he told me that he thought footbag was cool, "especially that thing where you spin around twice." :D That's another reason to learn double spins; the non-footbagging public can easily recognize what you are doing, much like DATW.

I got in a 2 hour session with Luis today. We played in the gym for the first hour, then outside on the basketball courts once they closed. Rev. whirls are looking a lot more consistent for Luis. I was glad he came out to play, because it makes it easier for me to pace myself, and he can also call out "the" or give me input on tricks (like what went wrong with a double spin).

The biggest highlights for me were:
1. Figuring out a better way to set my vortex.
2. Double spins feeling more natural.

Highlights:
*vortex-PSW-pdx torque to a run. Had DSC off my foot in the seal
*smog bsos (rare), with a fog in the seal.
*a run with flurry and PSW all bsos, and tomahawk bsos off my foot.
*PSW-ripwalk bsos.
*6 DSCs total throughout the session. All midstring, all sealed guiltlessly. A few of them made incidental contact with my jersey/head, but not enough to really hurt the trajectory of the bag or the flow of the trick. I also had a bunch off my foot, so even my misses were closer than usual.
*spin clipper-DSC. My first time hitting DSC out of a non ducking trick.
*2 DSCs in a run. I dropped going for a third.

I was also really excited to hit vortex-superfly, and HPD-superfly, but apparently both superflies were clearly "the." :x I also had some promising looks at HPD-vertigo, which I think is a cool combo.

My right ankle felt kinda bad at the end of the session, which was random and not cool. I'm gonna take tomorrow off from playing, and hope that makes it feel better.

Your too kind.

If there is space to crash I would like to make it to the event. I have a tentative performance at the Warhol Museum the next week so I need to plan this out right, and in advance.

Excellent solo session today. I planned on taking the day off, but I couldn't help myself. I ended up playing well and didn't hurt my legs at all, so it's all good.

Highlight of the shred was having DSCs clicking better than ever. I hit 7 or 8 DSCs, all midstring, no slops, all sealed guiltlessly. My success ratio was also a lot higher than usual, probably my best so far.

Highlights:

*magellan x2 bsos, with a DSC in the seal.
*dim-fog-dim-duck clipper-DSC-run
*PSW-ripwalk, a DSC a few tricks later, dropped trying to step out of the other PSW
*bl. whirl-bl. drifter both sides.
*bl. whirl-bl. drifter, a DSC a few tricks later, other bl. whirl-bl. drifter off my foot.
*diving clipper-DSC.

I also had some good attempts at sidewalk-DSC and ripwalk-DSC. Just overall DSC was feeling better and more reliable than it ever has before.

I think I also may have hit a new trick: whirling ss butterfly. It felt real weird though, so I'd like to see it on vid before I claim it for sure. Hard to explain why it felt so weird.

My goal for next session will be to try and start doing non-bop tricks out of DSC.

2 nights ago I went to bed pretty late, and a little loaded, since it was the last non-school night of fall break. I woke up around noon, worked all day... and then worked completely through the night. Like, no sleep whatsoever. It was really trippy the next day. I actually was very lucid and participated a lot in classes. I start to crash in the middle of the day, and took a 1 hour nap in my department lounge, and then made it to my last class of the day. I didn't want to take a long nap in the middle of the day, because I'm afraid of further screwing up my already bad sleep schedule. So I went to the video lab and discovered that the Adobe software there was actually working pretty well. I decided to watch some footage I had shot, and figured I might as well capture it at the same time. I mostly just wanted to see the footage on a big screen with the option of slow-mo. I was actually very pleasantly surprised with my game; a lot of my steps and whirls were clean when i was afraid they might not be.

I borrowed a camera for tomorrow, but we'll see if I have the strength to play. I've been awake for something like 33 out of the last 35 hours. 8O

Recovered from my horrible lack-of-sleep odyssey, ending the ordeal by getting a good 9.5 hours of sleep last night. A hot shower later and I felt like I was back from the dead, but I didn't truly feel like I was "back" until I got in a shred session today. I played solo and filmed the session; I think this will be the last bit of footage I send to Rory for his video. I'm curious to see how the video comes out. Most of the footage was shot over the last month, and there's a bunch of stuff in there that is just new stuff that I happen to be into at the moment, like motions and double spins.

Filming a solo session normally sucks, because not only does the footage come out real static, but you run into all sorts of other problems like accidentally hitting buttons, worrying if your entire body is in frame, etc. But filming myself today had a very positive outcome. I've recently started doing flip mullet, but I'd never seen how they look on video. I hit a few today, and when I checked them I could tell (even on the small LCD screen) that I was setting the duck too high. Some people would probably still give me credit for them, but I wouldn't, so I altered my technique mid-session and began hitting them much more cleanly.

My goals for the video today were pretty straightforward:

1. Hit some basketball tricks.
2. Put DSC in the middle of some good runs.

Objective #1 was very easy, and I got some good usable stuff. Objective #2 didn't go as well. DSC wasn't even the problem; I was hitting them pretty well. The problem was I would normally start my string with a good combo, then have some filler, then do a DSC, and then either the rest of the string was uninteresting, or I would drop soon thereafter. I also didn't like how obvious my filler before DSC was. You could just tell that I was killing time before getting to something good.

The biggest highlight of the session was figuring out flip mullet. I learned that setting them lower not only made them significantly cleaner, but it also gave me a lot more control playing out of them. Using this new technique I hit a 6-6-5 combo a few times, and it was super controlled. This really gives me hope that I will hit a beast in the near future. There are at least 3 very viable candidates, which I'll try next session. I think a good goal will be to hit a beast before Cornell Footbag Jam 2. Should be very do-able.

It became winter overnight in Ithaca. We literally went from t-shirt weather to hoodie and hat weather in the span of 2 days. I got in a shred with luis yesterday, and even though we were indoors, I felt the cold. I played OK during warm up, but my body cooled off real fast, and I was unable to play well after that. It was very frustrating. One thing that exacerbated the problem, was that I was trying for a beast, which meant that I wasn't doing long strings, and that got me cool faster than normal. The best I could do was foot a beast, but I couldn't seal it. To make matters worse, the tape speed on the camera was different than normal, so I mistakenly taped over a good run that I wanted Rory to use on the video he will make. :x Overall, yesterday was just one of the worst sessions I can recall (excepting times when I've injured myself). I think what makes me saddest, is that I know this is not a one time deal; it's winter now, and I'm going to have to be very careful about how I pace my sessions and breaks when I play from now until spring. Time to start playing in my infamous gloves again. :?
