I watched the Sick One's today. It really didn't do much for me. I thought a lot of the tricks looked dodgy and a fair bit had pretty bad style.

When I say bad style I don't mean the subjective "where are your arms" stuff. I just mean control and being slightly clean. I'm not talking about calf deep shit or perfect sets, but some stuff just looks bad. These aren't hard things to make look good.

I think people rush into tricks and kill their styles. I mean, people can hit 7's but can't do clipper right. There is a right way to set into clipper, and I see kids setting clipper in this ugly lean back way. It's really a shame.

I'm not saying I have great style but my shit doesn't look crappy. I at least look in control and I'm not going overboard on making things look strenuous. If you think I have crap style please tell me how I can make it better, I would give you my complete attention.

The reason I care about this enough to write is that if you look like some of these kids why would people watching you want to play? So they can look like that? People want to play when they see good players in control. I just think it has a negative impact on the sport and its exposure if people look bad. I know "bad" is a subjective term here but I think we can all agree that a lot of the new players just look really off. And I know I looked off at the start as well, so I hope people fix themselves.

I'm probably wrong about all this. I sure hope so.

I absolutely agree that bad style makes for a bad image to the public. I feel embarassed playing sometimes because i know how good this sport can look in the right hands.. feet...whatever
For some people though style isnt important, for others it would take many years of painstaking effort to make a good style, and for still others it is just not possible for physical reasons.. so it is a tough situation and not always a matter of choice.

That's exactly why I decided that if I was going to play again, I wanted to rebuild my game from the beginning components on up. Now, I'd say (based on comments from others) that my style was always ok (because I did learn good fundamentals on portions of my game), but my rush to be "good" or "guiltless" made me skip past certain things. This rush, is what I think you're referring to. In the long run I really hurt my own progression and enjoyment of the game. And, I think a lot of players in their rush similarly hurt their own games.

Remember Josh Benham? He's a great example of learning the right way. He had the best 1's and 2's I've almost ever seen because he worked on them like crazy. After that, he killed 3 adds and BOPS until they were amazingly effortless and smooth. He could literally run 40-50 easy tricks on command. And then when he decided to build on it, his progression was so fast and on a great foundation, and everything looked so good. Side note: Whatever happened to him?

Well it's hard to develop good style, Footbag is a hard sport in general. Some players have been playing for over 10 years and still don't have good style. New players are doing the best of their knowledge, if you really want to help them, then give them tips instead of talking about how bad they look. That just kills self esteem especially when all of these players look up to you and look for your approval.

But I do agree with what your saying about making the sport look good. Footbag has so many stereotypes that it already has a bad name. It's just going to take time and effort to make Footbag look as professional as we'd like it to be.

Agree with the first part. From what you've written, a lot of people could benefit from a video called Style 101: Clipper Form. So man up and make it.

Disagree with the second part. It's not as if you're naming names here. Hearing a rant like this from a player like Dave will at worst make a person more conscious of his or her style, and that can hardly be a bad thing.

Great to see you're playing/posting again.

i've seen dave post in individual's blogs that if they want his help to pm him. he's also given some advice to brian... and if i werent afraid of what he'd say about my sick 3, then i would ask him too (actually i will "man up" and send you a pm about my sick 3, dave). i think out of anyone giving their opinion on the online comps, dave does it the right way. he doesn't post 'the' on everything... he says why it's 'the'.

i keep reading upper level players talking about how the newer kickers are advancing so fast that they don't pay attention to their fundamentals. i guess this is one of the reasons why my game has been moving at snail's pace. schedule and priorities are also why i haven't been improving quickly... but i've really just wanted to get the fundamentals im working on right before i move on to the more difficult tricks.

i guess i'll stop rambling.

Style.

Style is weird. It is like air, you know it is there but you canâ€™t define it or grasp it. It is hard to say what makes a great style, but I felt like trying. It is weird that style varies so much and that a hated style can be loved by someone else. I remember at worlds watching a player and just loving every move. Honza was next to me and I was like â€œdude, this kid has amazing styleâ€
