Permissions for sharing old VHS tapes online? [no video]

There are a lot of really old, older, and not-so-old VHS footbag videos out there. I don't really feel that they are on the market anymore, as in nobody except crazies like me would pay money for VHS tapes. I've backed-up tapes that I own myself (I have 20-something-ish? Or 30-something-ish?) just for my own personal convenience/enjoyment, since I don't have a VHS player myself, and had to borrow one to digitize. I've even been sent rare (1-of-a-kind) tapes by the CIC for digitizing purposes.

This has come up here a few times in the past. I think the last time it was by King Monkey? Or Garreth(?)? Is that the same person? It may not have been about VHS tapes specifically, but it's the same kind of idea.

I guess I'm talking about pre-Aggressive Grounds VHS tapes mostly. I think some of the older video makers don't even play anymore. The ones whose videos I have the most of are Eli and Eric, who've just recently left the scene (and recently come back after hiatus?). I wouldn't want to do anything without permission of course, which makes it difficult that these video makers aren't really around and I don't really personally know any first or second generation players who could mediate for me.

I had an idea of maybe putting them on YouTube (because of convenience and the popularity of the site!), but older videos were usually 1.5-2 hours long, and that would be a lot of little 10-minute segments on YouTube. So I'm not sure of a solution in that respect. On the one hand, being able to download from .org would be super, but being able to watch any video whenever you want online was kind of more what I had in mind. I think it would be so educational for everyone to be able to watch the kinds of videos that I grew up watching (and making [raw VHS], come to think of it), and the ones before then too.

What are other peoples' opinions on this? Is it even worth bringing up, or is it terrible to even think of copying and "distributing" these videos? Is it rude to ask for permission? Thoughts?

I never thought to ask permission for internet videos, since they were already on the internet, YouTubing them just made them more accessible (bad?). I just uploaded Sam Colclough's 30-minute "Footage" video from CSS3, and that's when I made the connection, since it was originally one of those old VHS tapes, but he had digitized it himself and hosted it on .org.

As soon as I noticed that you uploaded some older videos, I instantly started watching them all. It was really inspirational and informative to see all the older stuff and I was glad I could see it. I don't know if you should ask for permission, but I'm sure it would be highly beneficial if those videos were up there for everyone to see.

I've received a few PMs about this post, and I think there's some confusion. I'm sure players who've been around about as long as me and longer know what I mean, but a lot of newer players may have no idea. Freedom Footbags has a lot of VHS tapes for sale. I'm not talking about those. I have all of those tapes. Before these videos were edited on computers there were video producers editing up raw video through their big clunky video recorders and VCRs (Sam's Footage is a recent example of this). The trend seemed to be a tournament or a couple tournaments or just club sessions and jams where the footage was all more or less chronological without really player sections, sometimes with music, but more often just completely raw sound and video.

I'm not a super old player so it's not like I'm an authority on anything, but I started in around 1998 or so, and so I experienced kind of the end tail of these raw videos, I think.

I haven't started doing this with the YouTube account yet, that's just an example of internet videos that are way newer than the stuff I'm talking about. I'm not talking about VHS tapes like The Lion's Den, or True Playaz, or Overground. I'm talking about videos like California Connection, Raw Shred, Shredded Documents...
Just to clarify.

So I'm posting here not because I don't have the ability to contact the producers themselves (though I am mostly just familiar with the two), but because I want feedback first on what other people think, and if it's appropriate for me to follow-up on this sort of thing.

I have a few of those, and I think it would be great if you got permission to digitize them and put them on the internets.

Oh, also, a lot of my dates are wrong on the YouTube thing, so if anyone notices, it would be cool if you could PM me or something. I guess Footage should be 2002, since it was CSS3, and CSS1 was 2000, I think...
Bleh.
I explained it a bunch in the little "about" areas, but somehow creation dates and last modified dates got mixed up in the file properties of lots of the older internet videos I have.

I love that you put those older videos up. I'll go through them all next time I have internet for a long period of time.

I'd like to see those older VHS videos. I feel alot about the sport could be learned by watching older footage.

This may be the wrong place to ask, but do you have any Brian McKenzie (or is it Mackenzie?) videos? I'm really curious about his style and such, but I'm not sure I've seen any videos of him.

I've been following the notHackrifice account for a while, it's fun to watch all these videos.
