On The Topic of Small/Mini Footbags

Post by Senor Grommet »

I am under the impression that many of our young footbag community have fallen under the false impression that "mini" footbags are better for their game than larger bags. I am afraid that this is simply a false rumor. I shall explain:

It seems that many new players want to buy mini bags that are nice and heavy just because they have been seeing other, more experienced players doing the same thing. WHY? A bag that suits one person does NOT necessarily siut another's game.

For example, a new player (IMO) should play with a large bag that is not too heavy. The benefits are that the bag is easier to stall, both on clipper and toe, and that your leg doesnt get tired as quickly. A beginner does not need to perform triple dexes, so a small bag does the beginner no good. It is not any easier to stall, and in fact, may actually be more difficult to stall because it is smaller. Newbies, think twice about the size of your bags! Dont just "go" small because everyone is doing it. If you are just learning the basics, stick to the bag that will allow you the ability to learn the basic stalls, 2 adds, and 3 adds the best- that is a larger bag.

Right now I'm using a regular Abshire. Is that small or large?

By the way, I'm thinking of fixing up the bag I bought from you one of these days. Will need to patch up some holes and bleed & add some filler.

It is my standard size. You would know if it is a mini. That size is perfectly fine for all levels from first time to 10 year pro. The mini has a different feel and performance. I use both. The mini helps with drilling big moves and the standard is perfect for shred. When my mini is fully broken-in, I will shred with it. For newbies who want to use a 32 panel, the regular size that most stitchers make is the perfect bag to shred with. The mini that I make has a new customer base, smaller feet. It fits perfect in the toe box of smaller shoes and gives larger size players that their stall spots are huge. There is always time to explore different bags after you have some skills. That way you can enjoy the difference between great footbags.

Sorry, I knew this. I meant does it fall under small or large on Jeremy's poll?

it would count as a "large" in my poll. Anything that is not "mini" or ordered because you heard it was a "small" bag is counted as large. There should really be a third option, i know.

I use a Mr. Sandbag, and I know that it is fine for begginers, like me, but I'm just curious is a mini smaller then a Mr. Sandbag because it's pretty small and are the normal size usualy smaller or about the same as the Mr. Sandbag? Thanks for your help

i disagree. i have owned both and they are very similar in size.
a brand new Freedom Footbag (mr sandbag) and a brand new mini Abshire are about the same size. and a fully broken in mini and a well used mr sandbag are similar in size also. they are golf ball sized when new

Here's a shot of my bags... you can use it as a comparison between sizes of different bags.

there you go. the abshire mini is very new in that pic and the sandbags are old, well-used and stretched out. my point is that they are very similar in size when both are brand new and when both are "broken in"

Actually Jim, the Puple/Black sandman and the Red/Gray sandmans had NOT been played with when that picture was taken. So those are essentially "new" sandmans. I think I kicked with them some. Still, I don't think that the Sandmans are the same size as Mini Abshires...

Uhh, dude? sandmans are definately bigger than minis. Broken in, Sandmans are about the size of an abshire regular I think. Out of the box, Sandmans are bigger than Regular Abshires, meaning they would also be bigger than Minis.

Edit: I have not bought a Sandman in about a year. Sizes haven't changed have they?

Firstly my mini Abshire is much smaller than my revolution.

But if we stick to the actual topic at hand, I don't think it creates many problems what bag a newbie starts with. I started with a guatamalan crotched bag from the Oxfam shop and was happy with it. I learnt most of my basics with it.

I think the important thing to do is to use as many different bags as you can. Don't immediatly get an mini abshire because someone thinks they are the best and never use another bag. I think every bag you get should be a different type of bag until you've been playing for long enough to think you know what kind of bag is best for you. I've been playing about two and half years and I don't think I know the answer to that question yet.

Through recent testing with several levels of skill, I have noticed every player having more fun and shredding in a more aggressive way than compared to sessions where a different bag was used. The progress has more to do with weight than size for a newbie. If you can feel the bag better, than the control goes up. Every player that has encountered a broken in mini has switched that session and will not play with anything else. This bag is for a high level of play, but at the same time, all levels can benefit fron this type of bag. If a player is more aggressive with their game, then the progression goes up. It boils down to effort. Hope this helps,Richie

The information that I posted is not from an opinion, but from testing with all skill levels. This bag promotes the type of play that makes a great shredder great. There may be problems with your game that have nothing and I mean nothing to do with the bag your playing with at the time. Think of what any pro athlete goes through when training. Practice, stretching, proper gear, fluids and the right diet and so on. Smaller heavier bags are easier to set and dex. Ducking and spinning are also easier to do, but you have to be able to spin and duck for this bag to prove itself. If your style is more flowing with less difficult transitions and a lower add count, then a larger bag might be a better thing for you. If precision and extreme difficulty are your focus then the mini should fit the bill. Explore your game and find out the whole story, before you purchase a bag. What is best for you might not be the best for another.Hope this helps,Richie

I am still doing the testing on the mini mini. I call it the mini micro. The one that I am testing is proving to be a great trainer. Once it is broken-in, then the performance tests can begin. I will post results when testing is done. Hope this helps,Richie
