You know what I find most interesting? That accent in Sméagol's name... See, in French language it most often makes an 'ay' sound.

Yeah, Tolkien was known for his extensive use of diacritics, and he'd put them in varying places, suggesting that they were more for esthetic value than anything else. The accute accent in Gollum's old name would suggest you'd pronounce it :"SMAY-uh-gol". However, Tolkien himself pronounce it "SMEE-gol" or "SMEE-AH-GOL", so thats why they pronounce it like that in the movies.

I actually hated that scene in the movie. It's already a funny scene in the book and it just felt to me like they tried to over play both characters - which was a problem throughout the whole movie. Peter Jackson have a very low view of the intelligence of the target audience for his movies.

Yeh he did, after traveling down to so cal for a little while I always long to get back up north...but it's probably actualy not that bad down there, lots of people like it...
